I sooooooooooooooo get this! I redid my powder room and wanted the hanging vanity with the light under it. DH thinks that's ridiculous.....and why would THAT be in style...he says..

Really forunate timing - about an hour ago I emailed my husband a picture of some drapes I'm considering for our master bedroom, which is a disaster. I've been trying to find an insipiration for this room for about 8 years, and can't, so it's just a suite of furniture and whatever bedding, no wall art, etc. I was kind of excited and thought these drapes might finally set a direction. His response:

"Those remind me of my grandmother's socks when I was a kid."

?!?!?!?

Avesmor - I laughed out loud at your DH's comments. Maybe there should be a TV show, "DH's say the darnest things!"

And, mom2reese, at least he thinks they're "cool." Maybe you could accessorize your mall decor with some orange plastic trays.

On a slightly different track, what I most hate hearing my "helpful" DH say is "I can do it myself...we don't need to hire anyone."

The last time dh suggested something was right after we added on the new room which is really big, we bought new furniture and he got a new recliner.

He had an electrical outlet installed in the middle of the room in the floor. I was so happy he did this because it didn't even cross my mind, and our furniture floats!

Anyway, before we went to buy furniture, he stood in the middle of the empty room near the outlet and said, "I'd like my chair to go HERE."

Imagine a recliner (although pretty) being the focal point of a LR. lol

Trust me, that's one argument he lost. :)

About 7 years ago, someone gave me a small bottle of perfume, called "Pleasure" I believe (can't remember who made it) and since it was my favorite at the time (and I couldn't afford to buy it), I put some on.... Instantly my husband cried out that I must stop using that terrible cleaning product because it's making him sniffle. Sheesh. Then fast forward to a month ago, I put on another perfume after being perfume-free for 7 years (and kinda miffed about it too) and I only put on a tiny amount. And guess what he says--again? He didn't remember the incident from 7 years ago, but of course I did.

Cup, from the reverse point of view, my DH will use my STEPSON'S body wash in the shower, if his is empty, then come crawl into bed and....

Huge DIY overhaul around here 2002-05 or so. In April, 2004 I stripped wallpaper in upstairs bath. "My" bath. It was a bear of a job. Washed scrubbed, even palm sanded to get the residue off. Didn't get it all but got it back to a flat surface, so primed with oil-based primer, applied my smoky lt purple paint (PPG Heliotrope, think BM Wet Concrete). DH was replacing all flat doors with raised panel doors, flat interior baseboard & door trim with nice patterned wood. All of it sanded & painstakingly painted with Cab Coat.

So I got the bathroom done, he hung new door, put up trim on hallway side of door, but did not put up door trim on inside of bathroom. I asked. I got perturbed every time I walked past the pile of finished trim stacked in the garage. I got mad at him and said "What's up with that???" He hedged. He mumbled & he grumbled, committed & procrastinated. I threatened to hire someone, the notion of which made him perturbed. Repeat that verbal cycle umpteen times. Didn't get it, he's good at this stuff.

I still do not have interior trim around my bathroom door. Why? One day he finally answered: "Because you said you might repaint it. So I thought I'd wait till after that." (He overheard me tell someone ages ago that I might change it to a warm light gray 'next time'.)

What a weasel.

I always ask for DH's opinion about the big things in the room...wall color, furniture, rugs, etc. I always get the same answer- "Whatever. It's fine. I don't care." The conversation has gone like that for the past 15 years or so.

The bulk of the decor, if I had to call it a name, is traditional/cottage. Lots of antique/vintage things, a mix of dark woods and painted pieces, Hepplewhite, Duncan Phyfe, that sort of look.

One day he's looking over my shoulder at a pic of a very MCM/contemporary room with Danish Modern teak wood, chrome and glass, abstract art, sleek lighting, and he says "Oh! I really like THAT!"

My response was "Well, maybe your next wife will decorate like that."

He actually had a suggestion and was right on about the laundry room cabinet, though. It's ugly, cheap, oak that was poorly finished and installed, so we planned to paint it. I was just going to paint it white. He suggested red. Well, I picked out a color, painted a large sample board and stuck it up there, and it's going to be perfect. A red cabinet is exactly what that room needs!

Fun post! The great thing about my husband is that after I go through my usual obsession over looking for the "One" item in whatever room I'm doing, he gets so sick of hearing me go on and on and on... that when I do eventually find "It" he is so relieved that the nightmare search is over that he wants me to get it already. That makes the ending all that much easier because he knows it's going to cost him some bucks but he doesn't care because it's finallyyyyyyyyyyyy oveerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

franksmom that's a standard line in our house, too! I always tell him his next wife will be far more understanding than I am ;-) When I can't get him to do something for me or go somewhere with me I'll say, "Someday I'm going to get myself a REAL husband!" Gets him every time!

Those are funny! My DH likes to remind me of the time and trouble I spend picking up CL items that don't work out and I have to resell.

torsade - I'm with you. In fact, I just gave my DH an anniversary card that had a vintage picture on the front of a little girl watching a little boy fix his tricycle. Her balloon said, "Maybe we should call a professional" and his said, "Nah, I got it handled." This would definitely have been my DH and I if we had known each other as children!

Also, DH is with you on not wanting to smell like your children. I recently let my 7 yr old DD use my standard B&B Vanilla bodywash and lotion. DH didn't like it so she now has her own Sweet Pea scent. He also objected to me buying his standard cologne (which I love) for my DS. I don't get it but that's okay!

My DH's classic line -- this can fit so many situations, but for example, if I have bought a piece of furniture that needs to be assembled, it will sit in the box for several days while I wait for him to put it together. Doesn't happen. So I'll do it, and EVERY time, he says "I was gonna do that!" This also applies to laundry waiting to be folded, dishwasher waiting to be unloaded... etc.

Or, I might buy something without telling him -- not because it's a big secret, but just didn't bother to mention it -- like a pillow, new dishes, whatever -- and weeks later (even months) he'll suddenly notice and say, "Is that new?" (Also applies to haircuts, etc.)

The perfume reminds me of a story with my dh. He told me a coworker wore a really nice scent and went out and bought it for me. I took one sniff and told him it smelled like something his mother would wear. Sure enough, on the next gift giving occasion, he gave it to her and she loved it and went on and on about how wonderful it is (or so I hear, since I won't have anything to do with her)! Ugh! In a million years, I would not want to smell like his mother.... Not only is she a jerk, but she has poor taste. I always disliked her perfume, long before I realized how awful she was.
