What's cooking on St. Patrick's Day?

We are not fans of Corned Beef & Cabbage in this household, so I am looking for other "Irish" dinner options...

I baked Irish Soda Bread today (which, for me, can be a meal in itself) -- but I'm wondering what to make for dinner if CB&C is out of the question?

What will you be having for St. Patrick's Day dinner?

No help here. We're having corned beef, new potatoes, carrots, onions and rutabaga (rather than cabbage). I'm making a picnic cake for dessert--we rarely have dessert.

Corned beef isn't really an Irish thing. I think they have something like boiled beef--?? And a mashed potato/cabbage mixture. I'll have to Google it.

Haven't ate corned beef and cabbage for years - ever since a friend made it and I had such bad heartburn I thought I would die.

I do like the cabbage though.. so we may have that, but with chicken.

DD, thank you for your kind comment :-) To be honest, I am an Internet marketer and, one day, while enjoying the holiday season, I decided to focus my marketing on holidays. Tea Brack recipe first, then how to make homemade buttermilk. -Grainlady TEA BRACK (source: Irresistible Irish Breads - magazine article by Deborah Krasner) Brack, an Irish word for bread, is often used when referring to fruited mixtures. Tea Brack is a traditional tea bread which is an easy version of barm brack. Makes 1 loaf. 2 c. dark seedless raisins or dried currants (I use currants) 1-1/2 c. firmly packed dark-brown sugar 1-1/2 c. strong brewed tea, chilled 1/4 c. rum (I use 1/8 c.) 2 c. unsifted all-purpose flour 1-1/2 t. baking powder 1/2 t. ground cinnamon 1/2 t. ground nutmeg 1/2 t. salt 1 large egg, at room temperature, lightly beaten 1. Several hours or the night before baking, in large glass bowl, combine raisins/currants, brown sugar, tea, and rum. Cover bowl with plastic wrap and let sit overnight. 2. Heat oven to 325°F. Grease an 8-1/2x4-1/2-inch loaf pan and line with waxed paper. Grease waxed paper. 3. In medium-size bowl, stir together flour, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Slowly beat flour mixture and the egg into raisin mixture just until combined to form a batter. 4. Pour batter into greased loaf pan. Bake brack 1-1/2-hours until browned and cake tester inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pan on wire rack 5-minutes. Turn brack out of pan and remove waxed paper. Cool brack completely on wire rack. Grainlady note: I use two 7-1/2x3-1/2-inch loaf pans or three 5-3/4x3-3/4-inch loaf pans and reduce the baking time accordingly. This is a very moist bread - more currants than bread, almost. I like the smaller pans so I can cut the bread into thin slices that don't fall apart. If you make it in a regular loaf pan, the slices tend to split and fall apart. -------------------------- I use a large amount of buttermilk when it comes to baking on St. Patrick's Day, so I make a homemade version of it using information from "Natural Meals In Minutes" by Rita Bingham. I use a non-instant powdered milk, but regular commercial milk works VERY well. Homemade Buttermilk To a 1-quart canning jar add 1/2 c. buttermilk and fill the jar with regular milk OR reconstituted powdered milk. Note: You can use commercial buttermilk as the starter, or a reconstituted liquid made from powdered buttermilk, or buttermilk from a former batch of homemade buttermilk - your choice. Stir well and cover (I use a plastic lid designed to use with canning jars). Let stand in a warm place (at least 80°F) until clabbered, about 12-18-hours. Stir until smooth. Refrigerate. Grainlady note: I keep mine in my oven with the light on. The temperature at the opposite side of the oven from the light is about 80°F. You can use homemade buttermilk from a previous to culture the milk for the next batch. Just make sure you use it within 2-weeks. Older buttermilk doesn't work as well as newer buttermilk. If you've ever used reconstituted powdered buttermilk, it's rather insipid, thin, and tasteless compared to commercial buttermilk. The homemade buttermilk is more like commercial buttermilk.

Great ideas. Some do drink during the social hour. I will look up how to make the green jell-o shots. The Irish Potato Candy looks great also. Green beer sound good. All the ideas are good. Thanks. One game we are going to use was one we did at my women's club Christmas party. Need two people..blindfold one and have them stand behind their partner who has their back to them. Give the blindfolded person a bowl of ice cream and a spoon. They have to feed the person in front of the all the ice cream....either reach around them or over their shoulders. It was lots of fun.

No corned beef here. No kitchen. However, I’ve so enjoyed looking (and drooling) over everyone’s photos! My goodness Annie, you really cooked! It all looks delicious – is that corned beef in your scalloped potatoes I see? If so, you are ‘so extra’! We had corned beef and cabbage at my father's on Sunday. Another Irish option is Shepherd's pie (made with lamb, not beef).

I'm of no help to you, either. We are having corned beef and cabbage with potatoes and red potatoes.

Lydia - I hope I don't have heartburn from it. I never have before, and normally wouldn't worry, but lately I've been having heartburn after I eat certain foods.

Sue is correct. The traditional Irish Saint Pat's day dinner is lamb, usually stew. We're having corned beef made into Reubens, with my homemade rye bread, sauerkraut, swiss cheese and Russian dressing, grilled to perfection with a side of home fries and cole slaw. Slurp...yum!

We're having corned beef and colcannon. As the other posters pointed out corned beef is an American Irish favorite. The Irish would probably serve Irish stew with lamb or a pork dish. Here's a link to an interesting article on traditional Irish food and what's currently popular in Ireland.

We are having Homemade Chicken Chow Mein tonight since I got home late
last night from work and I did not fix dinner. Tomorrow I am making corned beef and cabbage.
DH isn't crazy about it but I just having a craving for it even thou I had some this past Saturday
when we went to Cracker Barrell for lunch.
I hope everybody enjoys their Irish meal today.

Going to my friend's house for our annual corned beef and cabbage dinner with new potatoes and green frosted cake decorated with green mint leaf candy for afters and of course to sip a few Bailey's Irish Creams. I promise not to do any jigs around the table like my Grandpa used to. LOL

We only have it once a year so having Corned Beef & Cabbage with carrots and potatoes. I made Oak Farls for breakfast. It is like an unsweet scone. DH like them.

We went out for Chinese food. I had beef and broccoli, he had sweet and sour chicken. I felt a little funny since I always do the corned beef and veggies but I'll do it over the weekend.
