I played bridge thru high school, college and a marriage.
But now it's been over 25 years since I played and I could not even begin to bid on a hand! Would have to take a refresher course!

I'm a bridge player...although it's been a while. I used to play a lot of Duplicate bridge and did tournaments when I had a permanent partner.

If you've ever player Canasta, Bestlawn...and you liked it as a card game...you'll probably like Bridge. However...Bridge is much more involved and the bidding process can get quite complicated the more advanced you become. But...once you get hooked on the game...you'll be hooked forever. ;-) The link below is to a site that will give you a lot of information about the game.

Yes...I think you could set up games here with 4 people. You'd have to post a visual hand and go through the bidding process...but it could work. I didn't read the entire site that I've posted the link to. Perhaps that site will give some suggestions.

I didn't play a lot, but enjoyed it - but haven't for many years.

I think that a fifth person would have to be dealer, deal a hand and let each of the four players know what that person's hand was.

I played Bridge for years but never really enjoyed it. I played duplicate and a lot of tournaments. I kept waiting for the fun to start, but it never did...so I walked away. It's one game that my ADD really got in the way of. My husband still plays every week and plays on-line every day. If you take to it, there is no other game like it. Good luck.

Around 13 or 14, I began playing Spades, Whist, and Bid Whist. Love playing cards but never played Canasta though. Maybe I'll figure it out online. Really want to learn how to play it.

My DH was a duplicate bridge player. We played a lot with his parents, and I enjoyed it despite the dirty looks I'd get (usually from him) for chatting socially. He took the game a lot more seriously than I did.

I can't imagine learning from a conversation on this forum or anywhere else. The game is complicated, and involves memorizing "conventions," or ways to communicate information to your partner by the way you bid. If I were to play again, I'd have to study the game all over again. I learned the first time from the Goren bridge book.

My dad and I used to play Honeymoon Bridge (bridge for two) all the time. Now, that was fun!

Bestlawn...Let me correct my original reply. "Whist" is what I meant to say. Not Canasta. Ye old brain ain't what it used to be. ;-)

Alisande...You really gave me a chuckle. I remember those looks. They, often, left me near tears before the evening was out but...to my delight and his dismay...I survived and went on to become a much better player than my frowning companion. LOL

I agree with you that learning how to play from conversations at KT is probably a bit unrealistic. One needs to mix actual play with the educational process to really get the hang of it.

I, too, used Goren's book and it's still around here somewhere...buried under a vast collection of reading material. I think it's one of the best...if not the best...book on bridge that's ever been written.

I'm an avid bridge player and play at least twice a week. The old Goren book won't help you now, as bidding practices have changed a great deal. My suggestion is to try to find a class near you. Senior Citizen's centers and adult education centers sometimes have them. YOu can also join the ACBL. They sponsor online games and their publications are full of information.

I think that ACBL is American Contract Bridge League ... or something like that.
