Um....nothing. I've never attended or given a New Year's Eve party, no one around here has them. The younger people go to local bars and get drunk, then get arrested, but we eventually outgrow that. Well, some of us do. (grin)

Usually I babysit for the grandkids, but this year Dave's sister has 2 month old twins and his SIL has a brand new baby girl, 2 weeks old. Not even the younger generation is going out to celebrate, and no one has the energy to party, LOL.

Elery will be here but I don't get that day off work, so I'll work all day, go home, have supper. I usually am asleep before the ball drops.

Ashley? She'll probably hit the local bars, it'll be the first New Year's Eve since she turned 21 in June. I told her to call, I'd come get her. Maybe I should stock up on crackers and gingerale for that New Year's Day hangover?

There will be six of us for dinner NYE. I haven't completed the menu yet, but so far it's

Braised short ribs
Mashed potatoes with truffle butter
Roasted fresh baby carrots.

First course might be one of the following:

-Lobster strudel served with baby arugula and a citrus vinaigrette.
-Some kind of shrimp dish. Was looking at that site Sharon (Chase)posted for ideas. (Can't remember the name of the site - have it at home).
-Baked clams (can't get enough of them)

Not sure what my hors d'oeuvres are going to be. Probably a hot spread and two other knoshes.

I think we'll probably just hang out at home NYE also. too dangerous to be on the roads that night!

I have crab legs and filet mignon in the freezer, may make a surf & turf dinner, I haven't decided yet.

We both work that day but have NYD off.

My 22yo son is having some friends over. About 6 or 7 I think. They wanted to party in a home instead of going out somewhere. I asked if I had to hide and he said, No. In fact, they'd all agreed it would be great to have the parents there, at least, the cool ones! Excellent!

Anyway, I haven't gotten the final word on the exact plan yet but I'm figuring on chips & dips, nuts, m&ms, that sort of thing. Very simple because you know, that's what they like at that age.

Depending on the weather, we will be going to a freinds house for a casual evening- sweats or PJ's prefered. I was thinking that I might roast a smallish tenderloin, grab some rolls/bread and make a remoulade type sauce and bring that. Of finally make the famouse riverrat chili.

If is snows and ices up, I am staying home with my tenderloin and lobsters, in my sweats and slippers with movies. Hey, I may pray for snow!

Lobster and Champagne New Years Eve. That is our tradition.

I usually do a ham on New Years Day but I might do something different. I'm leaning towards Lamb Shanks.

It's just hubby and I and we always stay in. We'll pick up a couple rib eye steaks and fresh shrimp that I saute with lots of butter and garlic to dunk our French bread. We'll have champagne and we probably also will fall asleep before the ball drops...lol!

I'm hosting a sit down, elegant dinner. We're having cold weather here, so I crave something comforting.

Appetizers: Champagne served with slices of parmesan and french cheeses (I always serve champagne early in the evening because we're all home in bed by 11 p.m.)

Dinner:
Julia Child's French onion soup, accompanied by a chardonnay

JC's Boeuf Bourguignon served with boiled potatoes
Lightly steamed french green beans
Lettuce & totmato salad with Linda C's blue cheese dressing
Wine: Chateauneuf-du-Pape

Dessert:
Amaretto-cheese ball, studded with toasted, slivered almonds served with grapes, and slices of apple and pear

I'll make the Bourguignon tomorrow, so the flavors will blend for over 24 hours before serving. Also makes for an less cooking the day of the party.

I associate crab with NYE for some reason, and so I would make deviled crab, crab and asparagus soup, or crab Louis. You could also make crab cakes or a crab dip with Melba toast. I think crab and lobster go especially well with Champagne (which I don't otherwise like that much), and so that's probably why I have this association. We still have the bottle of French Champagne that our neighbor gave us in June, and so we'll probably have that on NYE this year, although we also have a lot of eggnog. I think I might have to make some eggnog ice cream or some other eggnog dessert.

This year nothing special NYE-- to cold ( read that to old & feeling the cold ) to go party at camp as we've done in the past so Hubby's taking ambulance call ( driver) so the younger guys can party .

We'll probably just have shrimp cocktail ( won't go bad if he's called out )-- tho I'm thinking seriously of making one of those delious looking Tortiere meat pies that Ann T posted.

We're getting together with another family, at their place on NYE. I volunteered to bring the main course. Since I've had a leg of lamb in my freezer for a long time, I'm going to try that Gigot de Sept Heures recipe that was posted here before Christmas. (They are good enough friends that I don't mind testing a new recipe with/on them.)

Next day, we're going to my eldest brother's for dinner (NOT the brother who hosted Christmas dinner). I know we'll get a GOOD hot dinner this time. I'll take some gravlax for appies.

Nothing special. Just DH & I and we stay home.
I have NYE off but he has to work a full day. I'll probably make nibbles with the cheeses I bought at Whole Foods and the Thuringer Sausage my brother gave me.

NY Day will be a bigger deal this year....
1. OUR Oregon Ducks are in the Rose Bowl.
2. We'll be meeting DD#3's boyfriend for the first time.
I could use some ideas for simple, but "showy".
I'm gleaning ideas from this thread and others.
3. My son will be here for the weekend too.
4. Enough people for dinner to make it fun, but not too stressful for me!

I'll be in bed my 10pm and I'll be awakened at 11:55 by the car horns, bottle rockets and gunshots. Yep, we just get out the real guns out here in the country! LOL

We go to the Watch Night Service at church and bring in
the NY. I'm probably going to take Crabbie Apps, Zesty Sausage Rye Crisps, Roasted Garlic Spread and get rid of a lot of the yet to be baked Christmas cookies and the rest of the Christmas candy that's still hanging around so I can start out the NY with no excess sugar items in the house :0 ) There is always lots of food and often some new things to try and get recipes for.

OK, I retract that. Elery says he's making duck. It's still just he and I, so he'll probably have a glass of wine. I probably won't. We'll both be asleep before 11 pm, LOL.

Ashley is going to Traverse City with friends and she'll stay there, so they can deal with any hangovers!

Up at the cottage , just the two of us. We were suppose to have company but he has come down with H1N1....poor guy is really sick.

I'm doing French Onion Soup to start, Lobster Thermidor, Steak Diane, twice baked potatoes and simple steamed green beans.

We are having company for New Years Day and I'm doing a Chinese spread for that. Potstickers, sui mai, lobster bundles and steamed pork buns for appys. Won Ton Soup and Shrimp Lo Mein for dinner.

I am here in VA. at my son's place I don't know if they have plans. Staying off the streets where all the drunks are , my son said just now. New Year's Eve is not a festive time for me since my mother passed away on that day in 2003.

Daylily, sorry NYE is a sad memory for you.

My NYE is pathetic and I like it that way. I watch a movie, maybe eat something I like, and go to bed early.

I guess just staying home....and reading and watching the tube.
I should contact the rest of the "single ladies" and invite them to my house....but I really don't want to.
For a lot of years I thought I couldn't live if I didn't have huge party plans new year's eve......for more than 10 years I threw an after hours party for between 70 and 80 people....made tons of bloody Marys....and has a ham which we sliced and a huge egg casserole, dozens of home made rolls and a punch bowl of fruit and coffee too...
It was great fun, and I worked like a dog the day before....people loved it and often I poured the last out the door close to 6 AM....but I am way too old to even go to a party like that...let alone throw one!!
Just Chabby and me....eating shrimp and maybe beef filet and watching the ball drop.
If I had been a real party girl...I would have had a New Year's brunch....now I am sorry I didn't plan it sooner!

Reservations! We made reservations!! Haven't gone out for New Year's Eve since 1999. Don't know how I'm going to stay awake for dinner at 8:45, but I'm going to try. Then a blues band is playing at the restaurant afterwards fronted by one of my husband's old school chums.

I'll be glad to close the door and turn the key on 2009. I've been through the most radical treatments they have for breast cancer. It's been the worst year of my life.

Seagrass I posted to quickly without reading all the posts. I had no idea you had been through breast cancer treatments.

I know how terrible cancer, and all that goes with it, can be. My best wishes to you for a full recovery and a cancer free 2010.

You and all the other cancer survivors are my heroes...it's not easy.

Seagrass. I hope that you will have a great 2010 and the next five years. It has been ten years for me, but my cancer was thyroid, not breast cancer. But regardless of what cancer we have , when we survive that is what counts.

Eleven years post breast cancer.......and the most radical and aggressive treatments.....and believe me it was worth every mouth sore, bone ache, nausea, tired feeling there was!
Agressive treatment is a GOOD thing! But I am glad its' over.....and glad for you too!

Seagrass, it may have been a horrific year for you, but you have made it to a new one. Take pride in your strenght. we are very happy you are here!

Looks like some good eating going on here tonight. After staying home for years we decided to go out tonight. We rented a limo for the evening so driving won't be an issue for us. The few cabs we have will have long waits I'm sure. We are having dinner at a great steak house and then going bar hopping. Should be fun....just hope I don't regret it too much tomorrow. LOL!

Nothing really. We have a fall out in the family so nobody has any mood for food. I probably will just make a salad to go with grilled chicken.

Segrass, congratulations on making it through everything physical and emotional that goes with aggressive treatment for breast cancer. It is worth it. My mother discovered breast cancer when I was 16 (1970) and she lived 12 years with lots of treatment. Treatment is much better now. Celebrate tonight with joy.

I am shampooing carpets, cleaning like mad and cooking. Tomorrow I am having the first dinner party in the new kitchen. Actually, I have never given or attended a dinner party. It's nerve-wracking and exciting at the same time.
