Using 2 different wood species for cabinets

I picked out cherry cabinets in a natural finish, but I'm switching to maple to save $$ -- so I can upgrade my range :)

I like the look of an island with different colors for cabinetry and countertop, so I'm taking it off the kitchen cab order and having a friend make it out of unstained antique chestnut. Now, that would look great in a kitchen with painted perimeter cabinets, but dh doesn't like painted cabinets. Argh! What color would look best on the maple, then? If it helps, I'm using a neutral corian (tumbleweed) on the perimeter counters with the maple, and I'd like to get soapstone on the chestnut island. (Dh would like chestnut in the entire kitchen, but that's too much rustic for me) Advice?
