Sides with lobster crepes

Next weekend I plan to serve lobster crepes for lunch and am trying to think of sides. Between the filling and the sauce they will be very rich, so I'm looking for something light. And since the color will be bland, I'm looking for colorful. I was thinking about roasted tomatoes and sauteed haricot verts. Thoughts/other suggestions?

For lunch I would just serve a salad....and a very little bit of something colorful on the plate....perhaps 3 spears of roasted asparagus with a couple of strips of roasted red pepper....or perhaps roasted orange pepper, for garnish.

James, I like your suggestion for sides and all of Lindas, except the salad. But I'm probably the only one that wouldn't be happy with salad as a side. Asparagus would be my first choice or maybe snowpeas with slivers of sweet red pepper.

And for a little more colour on the plate maybe garnish with a twisted slice of lemon, or sprinkle finely chopped parsley around the edge of the plate.

Johnliu: I just came back and reread some of the Posts. Your thread on the Chinese using Chopsticks sounds right. I also heard many years ago, that you should remove the stomach, before freezing , or Gastric enzimes will be released, causing the meat to deteriorate quickly. Teresa_mn: I like your first Post. Often, do things like that but use oven bags and throw in a few tablespoons of Tomatoe Sauce and Garlic. LOU Lou�s - Crab and Shrimp cakes Ingredients One third cup each of chopped Onions, Peppers and Celery, micro waved 2 minutes. One half cup of bread crumbs 2 teasp. Parsley Flakes 1 teasp. Garlic Powder 2 teasp. Parmesan Cheese One half teasp. Old Bay Seasoning Mix the first 6 items , add 3 teasp. Mayo Three quarters teasp. Mustard Three quarters cup, cooked Shrimp, chopped medium 2 - 6 oz. cans of White Crab Meat or lump Crabmeat 1 large egg , beaten Made 5 cakes ( paddies ) Placed on Oiled aluminum foil in a cookie tin. Baked at 350 deg. For 30 minutes, basted with butter and baked 10 minutes more, or until Golden color. These were Baked a little too long. They were good with Creamy Italian Dressing

FOAS, Thanks for the Wiki link. Us coastal Nutmeggers (the state's official nickname is "Nutmeg State" - don't ask, it's a crazy story) all know about the lobster roll's origination but keep our mouths shut to avoid conflict with Mainers. We just happily eat our lobster rolls dripping in melted butter and try to keep them a secret. lol I had no idea about Amagansett but am not surprised considering its location. I love the eastern end of LI! It's frustratingly close. I can see it but it takes our Nordic Tug about 1-1/2-2 hrs to chug over to Orient Point. Just as well. Sag Harbor, Montauk, etc. would bankrupt us quickly. :) This discussion of lobster rolls has decided our July 4 menu - lobster rolls, CT-style. Sides still to be decided. :) Check out Abbott's Lobster in the Rough's website. It's a fun place. Very common for locals to bring along white tablecloths, candelabras, sterling flatware, the good china, and crystal wine glass in a picnic basket and set up for an Abbott's lobster roll dinner on the picnic tables to watch the boats going thru Mystic channel. Everybody in shorts, tees, and flip flops, of course. Abbott's was voted by About.com, in 2012, as the best place to eat a lobster in New England. Bobby Flay is a frequent visitor also. Lobster fondue in a bread bowl. Then call and I'll be right over. Red Lobster - Lobster Fondue Servings: 4-6 * 16 ounces Velveeta cheese * 1/2 cup milk * 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper * 1/2 teaspoon paprika * 1/4 lb broil lobster tails or 1/4 lb broiled crawfish tail meat * 1/2 cup chopped sweet red pepper * 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped * 1 loaf round sourdough French bread Directions: Prep Time: 10 mins Total Time: 25 mins 1 Take the cap off the bread and hollow it out being careful to do it in chunks you can serve with the fondue. 2 Spray the inside of the bowl and extra pieces of bread with light olive oil and broil till golden. 3 Combine all other ingredients except red pepper and parsley in a sauce pan (if you are subbing with crab don't add here or it will lose it's lumps). 4 Heat on medium low till cheese is melted. 5 Stir in pepper (and crab if using). 6 Pour as much as will fit into bread bowl. 7 Garnish with parsley and serve hot with fondue forks. 8 You will need a bread knife to cut the bread bowl up into chunks toward the end.

From the Mac 'n Cheese thread... I'm another who believes Vermont Cabot white sharp cheddar is the best for mac 'n cheese. We love the tang much better than CB. I'm on Cabot's email list & I got a coupon for $2 off their Special Reserve Cheddar a couple weeks ago. I'm saving the coupon for Xmas as a special treat to serve with either melted Brie or apple pie. Linda, it's hard to find orange cheddar in New England. My store doesn't stock it. /tricia

My lobster crepes are very rich with butter & heavy cream. They are also a "soft" food so I like a side salad for some crunch. Normally, I keep it simple with just fresh baby spinach, a tiny bit of diced red onion, & a few orange slices tossed with a citrus vingarette & garnished with a few sliced almonds. I garnish the crepes with the meat from one large claw & 1/2 orange slice. Lemon, of course, would also be good...we just prefer orange.

I like the idea of roasted peppers & hericot verts...and the asparagus also sounds good.

Thanks for the suggestions so far - you've given me ideas. Grilled or roasted asparagus was my original choice, but I know my MIL would pick at it at best. Silly her.

If I were your mil I'd eat it all up! Thanks for this reminder...I have crab in the fridge which I almost forgot. Yikes! Crepes would be nice.

James I was going to suggest asparagus too but....
Roasted beets are wonderful and would add some gorgeous colour along with the haricot verts.

Joe - Asparagus is the only veggie I've seen her not eat. The inlaws generally eat pretty basic food. I want to keep it pretty simple. I'm molding the crepes in a charlotte pan and hoping for some nice clean wedges (I've been reading my Julia Child Christmas present!), so presentation is my bigger concern.

I'll have the salad Tricia suggested. Don't like asparagus or peppers. The snow peas in a little rice would be good too. What time?
