What a nice room! It seems so calm but welcoming.

In your last picture, what about bookcases around the door that seems to lead into a hallway? I was inspired awhile ago by one of the regulars here, and my mind is blanking, who used IKEA Billy bookcases and turned them into dead ringers for custom bookcases along a similar space. If she or anyone recalls that thread, it was very helpful.

I just put up some Billys with glass doors along my back kitchen hallway to use as a makeshift pantry and I have to say those Billy bookcases are really something. For such a low cost item they sure do end up looking good!

I would love to see that thread about the Billy bookcases. I am ordering one for a pantry, too!!

The french doors on that side of the room allow no clearance on the adjacent wall for shelves (does that make any sense??!) So I could add a bookshelf behind the wing chair by the sofa but not the other wall b/c of the door.

In the last picture shown, you could put a bookcase behind the wing chair. Pull table and wing chair out from wall a bit.

If you can find another spot for your Curio, that would be great for built-in's! Perfect wall for it, it looks like there's plenty of space between the wall and the chairs, right?

Scooby, I think a bookcase can fit there, very well. I'd make the emphasis more on books and less on display, with a few larger object scattered here and there. Once you take down the art, to make room for the case (cases), it will not look heavy at all, IMO.

There was a thread about Billy bookcases in Amys new house.

There seems to be a fair bit of room on each side of your curio. Have you thought about two shorter bookcases, flanking the curio?

I'm taking the opposite view: It would be very hard to put a bookcase in there and not make the room feel overstuffed. You do have a large entertainment unit and curio unit already.

The only kind of bookcase I'd think about putting in there is a low barrister's type bookcase or one of the half-height bookcases, as Carrie is suggesting, I believe. I would put it only behind the wingback chair, and pull the chair out a bit more into the room as well. I wouldn't put it near the curio because it's just going to distract from that. There's a lot of beautiful furniture in there already, and I think a regular size bookcase would be too much. And you have many pieces of things to be displayed already, IMHO; more stuff would just be like putting one more necklace on as you're ready to leave for a party, and to me, it wouldn't make the room more cozy, it'd make it claustrophobic. Less is more. The room looks very nice as it is!

Op said she was willing to lose the curio. I wouldn't have both.

I think the woven roman shades would look great and more in keeping with the style of your room. I had white plantation shutters on my patio doors in my last house and I didn't love how they protrude away from the door. Also, on one door it interfered with the door handle. I had 3" wood, painted, plantation shutters.

I think the bookcases would look nice in the room, but I'm like you.... I'm trying to think about where the money is going and in these times - what is really necessary?

Exactly--what color are your walls? they look wonderful. I am waiting on my leather sofa to arrive & pondering paint colors.yours looks good with leather sofa. IMO--I would move the curio out & do my bookcase on that wall. The room appears to be of good size. I would do it just because I have to have my books (or some of them) nearby & I love the look too. Also, I think I would prefer the roman shades..more interest

Ruby, take a look in the Gallery at the offices thred. It's on page 1 or 2. I've been putting pics of home libraries in there.

I think something softer like romans on the doors, in the warmer tones. to keep with the colors in the space.

As for the bookcase, why does it have to be tall and massive? Consider having the whole wall where the glass cabinet is now lined with bookcases, but perhaps only 4-5 feet high. Then you can still hang art above, perhaps wall-mounted lamps, etc.

I was gone all day yesterday & didn't get a chance to look at the responses....but what I came up with was the same idea as Les. I can still get some bookshelves in there but it doesn't have to be a tall case. Remove the curio...& put a console bookshelf along that wall. I have 2 lamps that I really want to put in that room.

I am glad you all like the idea of the romans....but sh**t - nothing I need can be off the shelf!! I need a length of 84" for those dang doors. Do you think I could get the ready made 72" since they will not be pulled down alot? Or is that just cheaping out??!!

Your room is just lovely and does not need a thing. I like how it is masculine but not over the top. I think low bookcases would look great just as you described with two lamps flanking the ends. This appears to be seen from your entryway possibly and would look great from the front entrance also with great artwork that you already have (great collection!)

I have been looking FOREVER for a Rug with the same pattern as yours. It appears to have the same colors I need. Would you mind sharing the details of colors and where you purchased or what brand. Thanks for your time--I lurk here often and love seeing your spaces.

Very nice room. I think you could get a bookcase in that corner behind the round table. It could be a corner bookcase and so not take much more room. You could even get a corner wall hanging shelf in there. No furniture would need to be rearranged!

Jjam!! OMG - I was eyeballing that very same bookcase in my latest Ballards catalog....was thinking that the openess of the shelves wouldn't compete as much with the ET.

But, DH has made me made some decisions :( - outside patio work or inside & with spring in the air I am choosing working on our patio!! (there will be pics soon & many questions - yall are so great!!)

Sooooo, I am going to keep the curio cab that is there......I would like to get 2 stools or chairs to flank each side (that could be pulled up when we have guests)

Thank you for the compliments....there is still something not quite right in here - I think it feels a little stale - looking for something to kick it up a notch or two!!

Ting - the rug is Karastan English Manor Kensington. I looked on the Macy's website for it....not seeing it there. I have been soooo happy with this rug - nervous about the lighter background but it cleans up like a workhorse. DH burned our grass last week & came in with TONS of soot on his shoes, of course he walked right on the rug but it cleaned up perfectly. 3 dogs & kids, too.
