Bathroom Tile - Wall/floor same, or diff shade?

Hello - - Building out a new basement bathroom, have the majority of the walls (floor to ceiling) almost completed w/ a 4x4 mixed beige travertine ( with mosaic trim midway) in a symmetric square grids.

Plan was to do the floor in the same tile, just turn them 45* to get the diamond effect to differentiate from the walls. I do see my tile place has a darker shade of the same tiles, and was considering using those for the floor.

Any thoughts on whether to stick with the same ones, just rotated? Or use the darker shade ones. Sadly i'm limited to a 4x4 max size do to the floor grade.

Keeping the same can offer a really smart, clean looking space and you don't have to worry about coordinating undertones with other tiles. This is a problem that I ran into when I did my master bathrom; coordinating the undertones was harder than I expected.

I vote for keeping it the same. Would love to see pics!

Thanks Andrea, I'm guessing my initial plan was probably the most sound. Still think a diamond pattern would be a good layout to offset the square pattern walls?

I'll take pics tonight, room is a small odd shape rectangle/L.

Any suggestions at all - maybe just for a tile for the shower floor that would work with the white subway wall tile and travertine bathroom floor? I've looked on Houzz and saw a small travertine tile that might work but I'm not sure if I should match the shower floor to the white wall tile instead. Thank you!

Instead of matching your shower floor tile to your other tile maybe you should consider matching your shower floor to your granite. We used the same granite as our countertop for our shower base. It's an option that may be a little pricier but it has definite advantages. There are no grout lines, no mold or mildew, it is guaranteed (at least ours is) not to leak, it has a low threshold, and installation is faster. Ask your fabricator if he does stone shower pans/basins. The link below is for the company we used but I am posting it just or basic information. Just to be different - I wouldn't. But, I have to admit that it is my own personal icky bias. Our cabinets, counters everything in the bathrooms are different than in the kitchen. Why? Because the thought of doing "bathroom business" in the bathroom and then coming into the kitchen to do "food and cooking business" and seeing the same stuff is, to me (IMHO), just icky.

Home Depot is the only place within two hours that sells the pre-fab, and the colors are horrible. I need three bathroom countertops, and the largest is 52". I should be able to find remnants, but I can't even find fabricators who have remnants. Nobody has a website and the fabricators don't advertise, at all. I found six places in Tulsa, but none of them have quartzite remnants. I can only find stone suppliers. I will make a list of suppliers this weekend, and call them on Monday. Maybe they have a list of fabricators near me. Even Google maps didn't have anyone listed near me. They didn't have the two fabricators that are a half hour away from me. What is your opinion on glossy vs honed in a bathroom. My kitchen has leathered Sea Pearl quartzite, and I love it. I prefer matte colors usually, but I doubt I would like leathered bathroom countertops.

Yes, setting the floor tile at a different angle would be a nice way to differential the wall and the floor. But, post pics of both tiles if you happen to have them and I'll give you my two cents.

I agree with andreadeg, I like when the walls and floors are the same tile. That doesnt seem to be the style right now, I dont see much of it on the decorating shows. Instead it seems to be the opposite, there are many different tiles used in one bathrooms. To me it looks too cluttered. I prefer same wall and floor tile.

I used the same tile in my laundry room for the counter, backsplash, and floor and just set the floor in a diamond pattern as you're suggesting. My tiles were 12 inch, and I just couldn't find a good match within the mental budget I'd planned. I was happy with the results--not amazing, but I was very satisfied with the clean look.

Yes please post pictures. We are doing ours, white subway tile (running bond) on the shower/tub with a wains cotting of same all around the room. We will do a herringbone pattern through the middle of the three shower walls for accent. That is a lot of WHITE. The question becomes what to do for flooring? Tile is too cold for a bathroom IMHO, so we have eliminated that. Not to mention I do not understand the attachment to super hard surfaces in flooring, too dangerous, hard on feet and backs. We are eliminating the 1970's green & tub/toilet. I want to stay away from being stuck with a permanent color scheme!! Future color flexibility is a must in my mind to keep a room from getting dated.
