low stippled ceiling - options other than drywall?

We have low popcorn-like ceilings in our master bedroom, just over 7'10". In our current master bed/bath renovation, we want to lose the popcorn. Contractor suggests that the cheapest option is simply dry walling over the existing ceiling. Of course we lose another .5", annoying but probably not the end of the world.

Assume for the moment that we don't just rip down the whole ceiling and start again.

What other options could we consider other than drywall? I love wood plank ceilings, but I fear that even a light coloured wood plank ceiling would seem to further lower the ceiling. I could paint the planks white, but I'm definitely not looking for a 'cottage' type feel for the bedroom, it will be quite modern.

Other ideas?
