Completed pics of decorative grille for ent. console

Last week I had asked for feedback on some different grilles we were considering for our entertainment console. The overwhelming vote was for the diamonds; though after I had requested feedback I was lucky enough to find the smaller sized diamond pattern that DH and I preferred--given that the contents inside the cabinet were not that decorative. We had decided to swap out the glass panels for the metal grilles because DH wanted additional ventillation as the components were over heating the cabinet.

We purchased the grilles at Orchard Supply Hardware in a 24x24 sheet. Our neighbor cut it to size for us with an electric saw (DH said sparks were flying), then I spray painted it with Rustoleum in a hammered finish to match the existing hardware and DH installed them.

Thank you to sheesharee for initially giving me the idea as she has replaced one of the panels in her kitchen cabinet with a similar grille. Before this DH would open the glass cabinet to the left everytime the PS3 was on (which seems to emit the most heat). Not only does it provide the necessary ventillation, but I think it looks much better too. DH likes all his tech-y toys, but I prefer not to see them all in open view. DH next needs to work on our surround sound speaker system next and plans to put a bass speaker in one of the cabinets and then get rid of the antiquitated ones on the console and bottom left. I'm also thinking of moving the cordless headphones pictured left inside the cabinet as well. DH bought them so we don't have to hear the TV when kids are watching. There are so many episodes of Hanna Montana we care to hear!

Love the new look! I need to do something similar as we have solid doors on our unit and we need to open the doors to see what mode the receiver is on when we want to watch tv. Definately didn't think that one out! I really like this look and both you and sheesharee have given me ideas!

Looks fantastic. I didn't comment on your first post about the vote, I was late to the conversation and I think you had already made your choice. I was going to vote for the one you went with ;) Great idea on spraying it the same as your hardware. Pulls it all together well.

I love the sconces that you all posted! My chandelier is actually bronzy looking and the link to pottery barn had the finish that matched it. One thing I should probably say about my photos is they really don't accurately reflect that my chairs really do pop against the walls. For some reason they do blend in in the photo. I am afraid if I put up beadboard, my jelly cabinet would just look kind of dingy in front of it. I do love beadboard. In fact we have it in our mudroom, kitchen, and three bathrooms ttodd- I love the Sturbridge Yankee Workshop which is where I purchased George and Martha. I am glad you like the rug. Today I was looking at it and I was thinking how I do love the graphic nature of it. I have taken my rooster pillows down and I think I want some pillows with some reddish ticking . Going to paint the ceiling to tone it down. I'm also looking for a lamp or two for the jelly cabinet. Once I get a new table, will the get things for the top of that. I so appreciate everybody's help with this room.

we have not attached it yet--- we need to look at the bed frame to see if its able to attach -otherwise we will get the appropriate frame- DH does not want to attach to wall-- its pretty sturdy even though its not attached.... HTN-- i hear you about transitional-- i kind of felt like i was liking that style but yes the rest of our house is traditional-- i'm keeping the headboard- so i'll see what else i come up with... I also think the bed needs an ivory throw blanket and a nice bench (thats lighter by the foot of the bed)... to be continued

I am more than happy to share where this stuff came from and am extremely flattered. The rug is the "Brice" rug from Pottery Barn, 9 X 12. The sectional is made by Jonathan Louis. It is called "Knobhill" and the fabric is called Basil Flannel. I got it at a local furniture store but I saw somewhere that Jonathan Louis furniture might be available at Macy's. The website has a dealer locator: http://jonathanlouis.net/. One armchair is coming this evening. I am going to arrange it all again and post another photo. This is immensely helpful and I am just sorry that I can't try every suggestion! Have a spare small desk in the garage, and will try whatever else I can get my patient DH to do. To make things more complicated, I found out that I can order another piece for the sectional. Since I bought the floor model I didn't think of it before. It will seamlessly extend the longer side another 28". That side will def. have to go against the wall (as in the first photos), but the room will be filled out a little more. Yet another option! I think I have decided against exchanging for a sofa/loveseat. One more question: when moving the sofa away from the wall, how far should it be? Just enough to balance things, or enough for an acutal person to pass through?

I will just be happy with the console I have, although I know it should be at least 25% wider, and I believe the arrangement on the lower part of the console looks better than it did. (Thanks to all the comments)..it’s just too expensive to go purchase a smaller tv, as one Houzzer suggested, just to get my proportions correct? ..and it’s too expensive to go purchase another TV console, (this console is only approx. a year old)......so that my TV fits it better... I had a 40 inch sitting on it, and the proportions felt right. My mother passed away in Jan. of this year & I ended up with her “larger” size tv....and it changed it up for me. I really was just having a hard time with the lay-out, of my arrangement, on the lower part of the console. Everyone’s comments in relation to my question have helped me, in regards to it looking somewhat better. I thank every-one for their comments.

kmcg85: I think most entertainment units are poorly designed. We thought we'd thought it all out since this is a custom unit and does have venting out the rear; however it still was not sufficient. Given how nice I think this looks, I'm surprised more units do not have them--other than the units you can purchase at a stereo store which have some type of mesh screen in front; though only work with a very modern decor which is not my personal style.

Looks great! I agree it looks like it was meant to be that way.

Did you end up attaching them similar inside?

I'm glad you were able to find the smaller diamonds. I like that better than the larger ones.

It looks great and solved the heat problem. You are lucky the metal mesh works for your equipment. There are those who have tried it and ended up making a Faraday shield rendering the electronics inside useless.

les: It does feel like a piece of "new" furniture now and seems to provide a better balance with the large black TV.

sheesharee: Glad you like it. I never would've thoguht of it without seeing how you modified your kitchen cabinet door. My DH attached them a bit differently then your Dad did. The glass panels were installed with a plastic moulding strip around all the edges with small nails tacked in periodically. So he ended up installing it the same way and reused the moulding strip and nails. I did mention the silicone caulking, but he thought that would be messier.

dilly_dally: I asked my DH it if would work OK with the equipment since he does plan to purchase some more components and speaker system; but he said it would. He is pretty tech savvy so I trust him there. We did test it with all of the existing components. I guess that is why the stereo companies sell entertainment units with more of a plastic type mesh material--which aesthetically I do not care for. I guess we'll see how this works. So what exactly is a Faraday sheild?
