Seed germination/how long without sun?
Comments (6)soonergrandmom FWIW, I DO put my just-germinated seedlings directly outside on the deck when the temps are 55 or higher, have been doing it for years. I don't have room under my lights for the larger containers they go in, so out they go on balmy days in either direct or indirect sunlight. (Even indirect sunlight is much brighter than artificial light.) As the true leaves develop, they immediately produce the tougher cuticles and shorter cell tissue structures that hardening off plants accomplishes. The seedlings are safe, don't have to be hardened off, if they have developed ONLY the cotyledons when you first put them outside. If they've developed one or more sets of true leaves under artificial lights before you do this, then they must be hardened off to allow the physiological changes to occur that are needed for plants to thrive in the natural elements....See MoreHow long is too long to leave a cat alone?
Comments (6)My (now deceased) Patches was not a social critter, and I think she would have preffered if we moved out permanently and left her the house LOL. But even still, we made sure somebody came every day to check on her food and water, even though it was a bulk feeder and a circulating water fountain. The two cats we have now are more social (with us, specifically me), but do okay if they are alone for a while. I make sure somebody comes over every day to feed them and check the water. Xena likes to put stuff in the water, and I have this fear of a big, sodden, swollen pile of toys sucking up all the water and the cats dying of thirst while we are gone. Plus, who knows what kind of trouble they can get into? Jasmine jumped up and got her paw caught in the spindles of the chair, and hung suspended as she twisted around by her leg - and I was standing right there. I shudder to think if we had been gone for a week or something....See MoreDo your dogs do the 'back-kick' thing after they potty?

Maggie my yorkie thinks I put it here just for her to sit on so she can be close to me..(only time she acts like a nice dog) Everytime she hops up here..she makes a couple of turns, lays down and while laying down she does a few of those back kicks....I think she thinks she's getting away with something...or to show she's boss. patti...See MoreAdvice on potty training a rescued dog
Comments (3)Dachshunds can be more difficult to house train and require a little more patience than some other breeds, so this may be why the PO's left him in the park. Beagles fall into this same category so if you've been able to house train yours I feel sure you can house train the dachshund. It's frustrating to bring a new pet into the house that isn't as well behaved (in house training) as your other pets, so I fully understand how you're feeling! My advise is to pretend this is a young puppy and start house training from scratch. I would start by taking him out, without the beagle, in the yard and stay with him until he goes. Keep him moving, don't play with him and don't talk until you see him go. The instance you see him either pee or poop, give a command you want to use from now on, then give him lots of praise. I always say 'go tinkle' and 'do your business' to my dog and he will now go on command......or at least try! :~) There is much info online regarding house training a dog so I'd advise you to read some of the articles. I've included one that covers basics, but it may be of help. Here is a link that might be useful: housebreaking...See Morequirkyquercus
