No no no, don't paint!

Clean and polish a little, but let it be brass. The combination with the marble, in my view, is much nicer when both are their natural selves.

Besides, if you painted it a light or bright color, it would look rather ordinary - a dark color, and you wouldn't see the pattern of the filigree so well.

And I wouldn't worry a bit about the little breaks in the filigree in the base. You have to stare at it to see them, and even then they are not bad at all.

How is the top attached?

The filigree breaks don't bother me. Up close, I can't even tell where something might have broken off as there aren't any sharp edges or color changes. I'll regard those breaks as improved character. :)

I did google this and found other examples, like those posted above (Thanks, olychick!) Still, I am not sure what the heck this table was intended to be used for. One table was listed as Hollywood Regency; is that correct?

bronwynsmom - There is a square piece that is screwed on to the base. That square, support piece is glued on to the marble.

I think it is intended to be a cocktail table.

I really like it and agree that, when painted, it is not as striking. You could put a plant on it, use it in a bathroom, or have it as a small side table.

pretty little table! i have no idea, but i would guess maybe it was an ashtry table????? (didn't they used to make little tables which had the sole purpose of holding the ashtray??)

I'm sure i've seen pictures of the exact table holding a hookah, a mid eastern tobacco water pipe. Many mid-easterners have them in their home and there are also hookah bars in larger cities~Americans have also gotten 'into the act'. Looks like someone decided to get rid of one. ;o)

If I had painted, it would be ORB-esque, like olychick's second photo. However, I will resist and embrace brass.

Yes, for some reason, from the dark recesses of my brain, I was moved to google smoking table to get those images. That's what I first thought of when I saw it, but I have no basis for that assumption.

Yours with the brass is the prettiest of the three. Do keep the brass. I love it. I would use the table beside a reading chair, between a pair of chairs, near an entry door, in a bathroom near a tub -- lots and lots of possibilities. Have fun!

Hi, I am normally on the garden forums and am a lurker on this forum.

I bought this same style table 22 years ago at K-mart.
I had just moved into my first apartment and I bought it for a bedside night stand.

Back then it came in a box and I had to attach the marble onto the base.I remember the marble having a made in Italy stamp.

I originally paid $35 for it and I still have it in storage.

It is a wonderful little table and I have seen this same style table at antique stores ranging in price from $40 to $125.

It is a wonderful little table. At the same time, I also bought a plant stand with three legs- mahogany stained with a green marble top. At the top of each leg below the marble was a brass ormolu. I paid $30 for it then. I still see that same style stand on e-bay and at antique auctions. Both remind me of what Bombay company sold years ago.

Normally, I would never paint brass but if it makes you happy- do it.

I used the table for a night stand in my first and a second apartment.

When I married, my husband had a wonderful bedroom suite and I used the table beside my tub for my toiletries.

Your post has made me want to find mine.
I have already looked in one closet. I may have it in the attic.
