I Finally Did It!!!! (long post)

After working 17 years at a Family Style Restaurant here in Edmonton Alberta, I quit today. I work full time in an office and was working at the restaurant on the weekends. Its a busy breakfast place and with the shortage of workers in the service industry here in Alberta, it was getting quite stressful. I was the Supervisor/Hostess and have to stand on my feet for 8 hours. I thought, I work 7 days a week, my feet and back hurt, I'm to old too do this anymore, I need to rest. It was hard to go, like a family but when the manager told me he was being transfered I thought here's my out. I stayed on so long because he was stressed out because of lack of workers and he relied on me to fill in shifts. Now with new management coming in, I don't care. It was getting to the point where I was getting annoyed at the customers and not giving good customer service like I should be.

wow, lira...are you going to be able to stay home or look for something else less stressful? with your people skills i'd think you'd be in need!

Well, I am a workacholic, so I guess in a few weeks I'll start to get bored. I want to find a part-time job that is less stressful. You know the one that your not constant worrying about it when your not there. I'm going to Toronto at the end of April for a holiday, maybe when I get back I'll look for something else or maybe I just need a hobby to keep me occupied.

Hi Fred, I heard wonderful things about you at the plant sale from Dora. I've learned a ton reading your posts along with others. My plants used to bloom once in a while and after reading posts on this forum and changing some things that I was doing (or not doing), they bloom almost constantly. I've had violets for a while now, but it wasn't until about 8 months ago that I've really "gotten into" them. So.......as with most who discover these plants, my collection went from about 6 plants 8 months ago to somewhere between 35 & 45 now (no thanks to Dora's plant sale!) lol I still have a list of some that I am going to order, but I figure I'll wait until I can get the ones I bought this weekend settled in. I do have my new plants isolated on some shelves that I have in my kitchen window. My others are kept on a plant stand that my Dad and I made. I know the window gets good light since that's where I kept my 5 or 6 for several years before we made my stand. You may have seen the picture of my stand. Dora posted it back in March. I can't wait to get it full! I think I have a pretty good start on it now. I think Dora told you in one of her posts that she met someone at the sale who had been lurking here..........that was me....guilty! Do you have any suggestions as to anything that I can do while I have my new plants isolated to ensure that I won't have any little "critters" hanging around? Carol

My little friend was there right on time this morning for his bath. Almost everytime I looked out the window yesterday after I posted he was at the feeder or the TV. Makes me think he's fattening up to leave. :( But at least he has what he needs. :)

Hi Marylee, I looked on Holidays & couldn't find your name. I wonder if you completed the posting. My DD has had to post pics for me or I emailed them to Kudzu when I 1st came on. Now I can't get them out of where DD put them. All I want for Christmas is a couple more computer lessons slow enough so I can write down what to do.LOL. Are you sure it was on Holidays? There is also a "Crafts" forum,not much happens there but I'll check & see if you are there. Jan

Hi Nancy, Actually, I already had a general, very general, layout and I brought it to them (Jacob). I gave them the exact measurements of the room and some pictures for inspiration. You can have them come out to measure, but you'll pay for the trip...probably worth it. I told Jacob what I wanted and he worked with me to get/fit it all. They have many sample cabinet door and drawer fronts to look at and a book to look through to pick out your hood design. The corbels I assume are also through a book of pictures of kitchens they have done. Jacob mailed me a paper with several legs to choose from, and I circled the one I wanted and sent it back. We did a lot of mailing, but it only takes 1 or 2 days. I gave them all of my appliance specs before they made the cabinets. My HVAC guy installed the hood insert The paint color is one of their standard choices. BM dove white or white dove, I can't remember which. It is a soothing color. They do have a fax number. I believe there are a few people that help them out with that stuff. Jacob Jr. doesn't do the faxing. He will talk on the phone, but he usually isn't there in the morning, his dad Jacob Sr. is, so Jacob Jr. usually ended up calling me back around 1 pm. Good Luck! A workaholic finds reward in the hours she puts in at her job(s) and this one just wasn't doing it for you anymore, was it? I think it's great how fair and loyal you are to your manager. That's a rare trait in today's work world.

I know how nice it is to be appreciated, but I'm glad you are finally able to take a rest.
Enjoy your trip, and just don't worry about it until you're ready.

My goodness Liira, take a break.

I once had a really easy weekend job that paid very well. I answered the phones for a Large Realtor and set appointments. I worked 20 hours on weekends and loved it. I was an old Lady doing 12 college hours working weekends and 20 hours during the week. I never got tired because I enjoyed every minute of it.

Maybe you can find something where you can stay off of your feet.

Because I'm alone, I like to keep busy. My children are grown and on their own and I don't have grandchildren yet. I go to night school 2 nights a week, I started a walking club at my full time job and we do that Tues & Thurs (takes about 1.5 hrs to do the walk), so my only free night was Friday and I worked on the weekends. Before I went to night school I was also working at the restaurant on Tues & Wed nights plus the weekend. There is a part time receptionist job opening at my full time job. I spoke to the controller on Friday about it regarding OT hours since I already work there, but since I'm on salary, I guess there is a way around working the part time if I'm paid hourly for that position. If I do the receptionist job, I would at least have every second weekend off. Maybe I just need to find a man, that would keep me busy *LOL*.

17 years is a long time!! Glad you had an 'excuse' to quit! Wishing you the best of luck on the receptionist job....it will be much better for your body!

Do you have any idea why it's so hard to get service industry workers in your area? Is it low pay? Are young people not willing to 'pay their dues'? Or some other reason?

I'm glad you were able to quit a job that was so stressful to you. I hope you enjoy the receptionist job. If you do find a man, make sure he doesn't want to keep you busy working. Let him know you want to have some fun.
