It Took Awhile, But My Unclaimed Property Check...

arrived today from the State of California. I think I applied for it about 3-4 months ago.

About 3 weeks ago I got a telephone call from the Division's Office inquiring whether I had any other proof that I lived at a previous address almost 40 years ago! (I had sent them the first two pages of my 1967 US Passport, which indicated my "maiden name" & that old address, plus copies of my CA I.D., marriage license & something else I can't remember). I got a little testy about that request even though the lady claimed that there were a lot of fraudulent applications for unclaimed funds (of course, not that I was necessarily one)---which doesn't surprise me.

No matter, without anything further from me, the check has arrived. Unfortunately no interest paid over these many years.

Good to recheck from time to time because I know there was no record of funds owing me as recent as maybe a year ago, though these funds date back from many years ago.

Interesting that the funds only recently showed up. Hope it was enough to do some good with it.

Glad you got your check fairly quick. I sent in the info for my DH's unclaimed property and they said it would be around 6 months so maybe it will be a little quicker than that.

Sharon: I don't know about any other kinds of cutters, but the ruler with all the slits cut in it so you can use a rotary cutter is, IMHO, a waste of time. I used it for my first Peek-a-Boo, but it doesn't cut perfect circles. You have to be awfully careful about where you place it on the fold, since the slits are only for a 1/2 circle. And then the slightest difference in the distance of the cutter from the edges of the slits throws the circle off. I was cutting out all the circles and then trying to sew 1/4" from their edges. Well, first of all, the lining circles and the colored circles wouldn't match up properly. There was no way to be sure my circles were accurate so that they could be joined in rows and the while quilt put together so that the intersections of seams would match up. It was a nightmare. I was so glad when I got the idea of making a template and penciling circles in and stitching on those lines and cutting out afterwards. Now, although it wastes a bit of material, I rip out squares of the right size, pencil the circles for sewing, and trim the seams later. It is heaps faster. Can anyone say if there is some other sort of quilt where having a circle cutter is worth it?

A few years ago, I checked the New York State Unclaimed Funds List. I checked my own name and the name of every relative I could think of. I found my cousin's name and told her how to file for the money. Turned out it was a Life Insurance policy on her late mother, worth nearly $1000. All she had to do was submit a copy of her birth certificate and drivers license,and her mom's death certificate , plus a signed notarized claim form. When she got the money, she gave half to her sister (rightfully so), then took the remaining half and split it with her husband. With her remaining quarter of the "windfall" she bought Christmas gifts for her young grandson. Funny how quick it disappeared. Alisande, enjoy your money. Let us know what you do with it.

Mary, I'm in a very similar situation as you. I live in Denham Springs and our home was flooded as well. I'm trying to find a custom cabinet maker that isn't three months out. Would you mind sending me the information on whom you used out of Mississippi? It's getting to the point where cabinets will be holding us up as we just are about done with taping and floating our Sheetrock. Any help you could provide would be great. And thanks for this original post as it has been very helpful!

Took mine three weeks to arrive. It was several thousand dollars and I was so excited when it arrived. It was an insurance policy on my dad that was not claimed when he died.

I went on my states (NY) unclaimed property list, found nothing for myself but did find $800 due my cousin. She claimed it and got the check just in time for Christmas. Need I tell you her husband, sister and grandchild all got great gifts that year?

Sounds like a few people here had Good News by searching Unclaimed Property websites! Mine was only for $140.15, but still.

And, yes, it is a total mystery why this popped up at this very late date. Makes me wonder how this was handled in pre-internet days, though I do seem to recall seeing a very long list of such items published in a local newspaper maybe 20 years ago. Maybe that was required that at least California did this periodically. Or maybe the State just kept it.

BTW, speaking of such lists in newspapers, when I was going through my local archived/microfilmed newspapers recently from around 1910 or so, they used to publish a long list of undeliverable U.S. Mail for my city's residents from time to time. "Come & Get It" I guess. I found that system amusing.
