kids shoes with skate wheel???

Have any of your kids had Heelys, which are a tennis shoe with a built in wheel? If so, what did you think of them? Did they track lots of dirt into the house? Did they scratch the wood floors? Were they comfortable to wear?

I am thinking of these for my grandson who is 5 and I am also kinda thinking of a pair for their uncles, who walk a lot.

Yes, my Grandsons had them. They were a novelty that wore off after about 2 weeks and $120, because they said the rollers bothered the bottom of their heels! They aren't allowed in school, and lots of stores ban them, too.

They are a big waste of money, imho. I go to lots of thrift stores and always see several pairs on the shelves, at any one time, for really cheap prices. As for will the scratch the floors - if they are wood floors, the rollers will leave grooves in them - ask me how I know THIS tidbit!!!

I have some for me. I would never get them for a five year old. The center of balance and the position of the feet is different on wheeled shoes. I can see back and foot problems down the road for a child whose feet are still not fully developed. I am talking development, not growth. If he was 8 I would say yes but not at 5.

Get him some roller skates instead. Roller skating encourages GOOD posture and muscle control. Much healthier.

Oh, Cindee, I am glad someone bumped this up! It was such fun looking at your 2007 gardens! I especially LOVE what you did with tubs ... the bathtub fish pond, the wringer washer fountain and the double wash tubs planted with spirea or whatever "ferns." And the tipsy watering can!! I enjoyed looking at everything. Love what your brother has made you ... and everything else you've done! Love your flowers! Lookin' forward to Spring! Thanks for all the pics! Jeanne S.

Marie, Here's our favourite stew recipe; it freezes well, though you should add the vinegar & hot pepper sauce after reheating. It also multiplies well (I usually make a double batch and freeze portions), though it can take a while to brown too much stew beef in one session. I am betting you have a nice, big skillet in that store kitchen!) BF has nicknamed this "proposal stew." The first time he ever came to visit me (we had met at a wedding in California, and were e-mailing our way to a long-distance relationship for a few months), I had a pot of this and a fresh loaf of the James Beard French-style bread waiting when he arrived. When he first tried the stew, he heaved a big sigh, and said, "You have no idea how much restraint it is taking me to keep from proposing right here and now." ;-) [In the end, it took him 5 more years to get around to actually doing so, but I knew as long as I kept making the stew it'd happen eventually...] Zabby Jamaican Beef Pepperpot ---from _Canadian Living_ Magazine, which says "there are as many variations on this chunky soup as there are kitchens in Jamaica." I make it with a less water so it's a hearty stew consistency. I also use about half the bacon, and still get a nice flavour from it. 1 Tbsp vegetable oil 2 lbs beef stewing cubes 6 slices bacon, chopped 2 onions, chopped 4 cloves garlic, minced 1/4 cup all-purpose flour 4 cups water 1/4 cup tomato paste 1 tsp dried thyme 1/2 tsp each salt and pepper 2 lbs sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed 1 each sweet red and green pepper, chopped 1 Tbsp wine vinegar 1 tsp hot pepper sauce (or to taste) -- In large saucepan or Dutch oven, heat oil over high heat; brown beef in batches & transfer to plate. -- Add bacon to pan; cook over medium heat for 5 minutes or until crisp. Drain off fat. Add onions and garlic; cook, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes or until softened. -- Sprinkle with flour; cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Add stock & water; bring to boil. Reduce heat to medium-low. Return beef and any juices to pan; add tomato paste, thyme, salt and pepper. -- Cover adn simmer, stirring occasionally, for 1 hour. -- Add sweet potatoes and red and green peppers; cook, covered, for 30 minutes or until potatoes are tender. [Freezes well at this point; reheat to continue.] -- Stir in vinegar and hot pepper sauce. Makes about 16 cups (8 to 10 servings). About 300 calories and 10 g of fat per serving.

LOL When I let Loki out on Sunday afternoon he fell on the ice too, flat on his stomach. I don't know who was more shocked me or the dog. LOL He wouldn't come back in and stayed on the grass out back and waited until he saw me open the door before he would attempt to cross the ice covered patio. My brother decided we were going to make our annual trek to Kingsville to Lakeshore Park to look at the lights. I could barely get off my porch and I was hooting and hollering when I started to lose control. I don't know why he couldn't have waited to go another day but I was unsure about him driving on the slippery roads. Actually the roads in the county weren't bad but the city roads were slippery. I couldn't believe the bozos on Highway 3 who decided to pass more than 3 cars at a time with oncoming traffic in sight when it was so icey out. They are putting everyone else in jeopardy. Our annual thing is we stop for coffee at Timmy's, eat candy canes in the car, he tells us to close our eyes when he drives by the park, get out (had to walk on the grass because the sidewalks were too icey) find Chip and Mrs Pots and as soon as we find them we leave the park then go eat at McD's. All that driving on a slippery road for 5 minutes in the park. LOLOL He said that it is our tradition but he wants to write the organizers a letter and have them separate Mrs Pots and Chip next year so they are harder to find or don't put them in the same spot every year. LOL I got home and Ken was outside cleaning off his truck. I forgot about the ice and walked across my neighbour's lawn until I stepped onto her flagstone along the driveway then I skated across. LOL I thought for sure I was going to go down but I guess I know how to skate too. LOL Dances, You and your DD are invited to stop by my house any time during the holidays for some Christmas cheer. Comfortable Kitchen Shoes

We are a shoes or slippers always (except when sleeping) in our houses. I do not want someone's bare or sock feet on my floors. Barefoot is for outside only - floors can be slippery. If someone wants to take their shoes off, I will send them to the back yard or patio, and they can soak their feet in the pool or spa, but they must put their shoes or slippers back on before coming back inside. Bare feet can track water into the house from the pool. Weather is always pleasant for going barefoot where I live, if that is what one is compelled to do. We do most of our entertaining in the back yard or patio. I agree with Kermit Venice that New Balance shoes are good, and I have the "mule" slip-on version as well as the ones with the Velcro closure. Before that, I had NB slip-on shoes that had elastic on the top front, and those were the best, but they no longer make them, and I somehow left mine at a friends condo in Mexico City. I should have been wearing them to the airport. I agree that Crocs are not the same as the original ones, and I bought Crocs in Palm Springs in 2003 at a special store before I had seen anyone else wear them. The first ones I got were yellow and were softer and more comfortable than any other shoes I had ever worn. The first ones were quite a bit more expensive, and I believe they were $55 plus tax. The later ones got stiffer and harder and used a very different formula for the material. I adjusted by going one size up, partly because I have a very high instep and arches. I have always worn them with the back strap over the front on the shoe, until I decided just to remove the back strap and make them permanently into mules. I believe that if you want to buy Crocs, you should try them on in a store, but they are definitely worth trying. Even if the new ones are as good as the originals😞, they are still my choice of shoe for indoors. I do not wear them outdoors, except only briefly. I do not consider them to be good gardening shoes. In Cathedral City, I have tile floors throughout the house, which is good because of the hot climate. I find them to be the easiest to clean. In L.A., all the floors have hard surfaces, except for the master bedroom, which was added to the 1950 house in 1992. The old portion has the original oak hardwood, except for the kitchen (which was expanded in 1992) and hall bathroom, both of which have tile floors. In the dining room/art studio (used as a den by the previous owners) and added hall, there are travertine floors, and the master bedroom has carpet over concrete, and I have not gotten around to changing that. The master bathroom has a tile floor.

My kids had them, but never quite figured them out. They were in 3rd and 5th grade at the time. They looked like fun, but they were bored quickly.

They have been banned from all of our properties (I am marketing manager for a mall developing company), and in most schools in the area.

they are banned because of liability, kids get hurt on their property wearing the things and also they can not control them and run into others and hurt them or crash into merchandise and break it.
Skates are not for everyday shoe wear they should be in a skate rink or skate park with protective gear worn.
I bet podiatrist are seeing a lot of kids that have feet & ankles messed up from trying to wear those stupid things.

Skating can be a fun activity if done properly and carefully.

Wheelies and Heelies are NOTHING like skates. I have skated all my life both roller and ice and the point of balance is entirely off on Heelies. Nothing like Roller, ice or inlines.

Roller blades (inlines) and ice --almost the same.
Quads - Entirely different from roller blades and ice.

Wonder that I ever survived my childhood. Speed Club- no helmets, no padding ,no wrist guards. Bare skin and short skirts for artistic - floor burns were a badge of honor. Water on the knee? Get some ice on it, see doctor in a day or 2 who might drain it, slap on an ace bandage and go back to practice.

Isn't is wonderful how some of us made it from childhood to mature age. Street skates, baseball in the vacant lots, tag, dodge ball, and oh those grudge matches in football. Oh yes, street drag racing! (but I NEVER did that) right!!!!
