kids shoes with skate wheel???

Have any of your kids had Heelys, which are a tennis shoe with a built in wheel? If so, what did you think of them? Did they track lots of dirt into the house? Did they scratch the wood floors? Were they comfortable to wear?

I am thinking of these for my grandson who is 5 and I am also kinda thinking of a pair for their uncles, who walk a lot.

Yes, my Grandsons had them. They were a novelty that wore off after about 2 weeks and $120, because they said the rollers bothered the bottom of their heels! They aren't allowed in school, and lots of stores ban them, too.

They are a big waste of money, imho. I go to lots of thrift stores and always see several pairs on the shelves, at any one time, for really cheap prices. As for will the scratch the floors - if they are wood floors, the rollers will leave grooves in them - ask me how I know THIS tidbit!!!

I have some for me. I would never get them for a five year old. The center of balance and the position of the feet is different on wheeled shoes. I can see back and foot problems down the road for a child whose feet are still not fully developed. I am talking development, not growth. If he was 8 I would say yes but not at 5.

Get him some roller skates instead. Roller skating encourages GOOD posture and muscle control. Much healthier.

Oh, Cindee, I am glad someone bumped this up! It was such fun looking at your 2007 gardens! I especially LOVE what you did with tubs ... the bathtub fish pond, the wringer washer fountain and the double wash tubs planted with spirea or whatever "ferns." And the tipsy watering can!! White pine floor + kids and dog = Disaster?

We are gutting and redoing my in laws old house. We helped them install a pine floor about 10 years ago and it was beautiful. It was great for them, living here alone with just grandchildren and great-grandchildren visiting. We moved in exactly one year ago this month to continue the remodel while living here and hubby and I said "at least there is one floor in the house we don't have to re-do". Then my 2 and 3 year old spent time on the pine floor. Now, we have decide to pull it out and put in a hardwood. The other option (and we have seriously considered this one and may still do it) is to take a few have duty chains and go to town beating the heck out of the floor until you can't tell what it new damage and what may have been done a hundred years ago. Since the house is 300 years old, we may be able to get away with this. On the bright note, the floor does not splinter and snag, it just dents and gouges.

LOL When I let Loki out on Sunday afternoon he fell on the ice too, flat on his stomach. I don't know who was more shocked me or the dog. LOL He wouldn't come back in and stayed on the grass out back and waited until he saw me open the door before he would attempt to cross the ice covered patio. My brother decided we were going to make our annual trek to Kingsville to Lakeshore Park to look at the lights. I could barely get off my porch and I was hooting and hollering when I started to lose control. I don't know why he couldn't have waited to go another day but I was unsure about him driving on the slippery roads. Actually the roads in the county weren't bad but the city roads were slippery. I couldn't believe the bozos on Highway 3 who decided to pass more than 3 cars at a time with oncoming traffic in sight when it was so icey out. They are putting everyone else in jeopardy. Our annual thing is we stop for coffee at Timmy's, eat candy canes in the car, he tells us to close our eyes when he drives by the park, get out (had to walk on the grass because the sidewalks were too icey) find Chip and Mrs Pots and as soon as we find them we leave the park then go eat at McD's. All that driving on a slippery road for 5 minutes in the park. LOLOL He said that it is our tradition but he wants to write the organizers a letter and have them separate Mrs Pots and Chip next year so they are harder to find or don't put them in the same spot every year. LOL I got home and Ken was outside cleaning off his truck. I forgot about the ice and walked across my neighbour's lawn until I stepped onto her flagstone along the driveway then I skated across. LOL I thought for sure I was going to go down but I guess I know how to skate too. LOL Dances, You and your DD are invited to stop by my house any time during the holidays for some Christmas cheer. My parents were both very good skaters and they used to take us roller skating. It was one thing my father would actually do with us--he didn't like sports, concerts, or camping. We had the clip-on skates for the neighborhood sidewalks, but rented skates at the rink. I was thrilled when my feet grew big enough that I could use my mom's white leather skates. My kids started skating early, with the little plastic toddler skates, then we bought them their own skates and eventually roller blades. I just bought skates for both of my grandsons. The local rink where my kids skated was recently sold and turned into a Dollar Tree. I hadn't been there to skate in many years, and I wouldn't even try it now.

My kids had them, but never quite figured them out. They were in 3rd and 5th grade at the time. They looked like fun, but they were bored quickly.

They have been banned from all of our properties (I am marketing manager for a mall developing company), and in most schools in the area.

they are banned because of liability, kids get hurt on their property wearing the things and also they can not control them and run into others and hurt them or crash into merchandise and break it.
Skates are not for everyday shoe wear they should be in a skate rink or skate park with protective gear worn.
I bet podiatrist are seeing a lot of kids that have feet & ankles messed up from trying to wear those stupid things.

Skating can be a fun activity if done properly and carefully.

Wheelies and Heelies are NOTHING like skates. I have skated all my life both roller and ice and the point of balance is entirely off on Heelies. Nothing like Roller, ice or inlines.

Roller blades (inlines) and ice --almost the same.
Quads - Entirely different from roller blades and ice.

Wonder that I ever survived my childhood. Speed Club- no helmets, no padding ,no wrist guards. Bare skin and short skirts for artistic - floor burns were a badge of honor. Water on the knee? Get some ice on it, see doctor in a day or 2 who might drain it, slap on an ace bandage and go back to practice.

Isn't is wonderful how some of us made it from childhood to mature age. Street skates, baseball in the vacant lots, tag, dodge ball, and oh those grudge matches in football. Oh yes, street drag racing! (but I NEVER did that) right!!!!

They are very passe. My grandson had a pair years ago. I never see them anymore because I think they're banned most places.
