Since many dishes headed for the dishwasher need to be rinsed first, I would think this layout will result in water on your floor and worse. I wouldn't do it.

My sister has this set up -- the dishwasher is behind and a little right of the sink. I am not crazy about this set up because it blocks the aisle between stove, sink and refrigerator when the dishwasher is open. I end up opening and closing the dishwasher door a lot when clearing the table and putting away extra food. Then there is the floor to consider, which does get wet.

It is actually a comedy routine when we have a family dinner there. The dog, my sister's 2 year old granddaughter, and a few adults trying to navigate that space. Yes when the dishwasher is open, the dog and my grand niece think the aisle is the best place to be.

They have a tiny kitchen and put an island in to house the dishwasher. Thus the dishwasher is behind the sink but it is not a preferable arrangement.

My before kitchen was this way for many years because we put in dishwasher 'temporarily' in a kitchen that had none before. It's a doable situation and I preferred it to no dishwasher at all. But it means a lot more steps (a LOT) and drips on the floor.

Let's just say we're not repeating it during this reno!

When we bought this house the dishwasher was on the opposite wall from where the sink was located. To say it was a nightmare is an understatement.

My floor was always and mess and had to constantly be cleaned b/c of the drips from the rinsed dishes going from the dishwasher to the sink (and from the dishwasher to the sink when my DH wouldn't properly load things and they flipped over and became water catchers).

When loading or unloading the dishwasher, the kitchen (which you had to go through in order to get from one end of the house to the other - another thing that drove me crazy) became impassable -- and I have 2 young children who would still want to go through the kitchen even though mommy was doing the dishes...

After living with it that way for 3 very long years, one of the things I am looking forward to most of all in the new kitchen is that the dishwasher will be next to the sink.

Think about all the bending and twisting you will do over the coursse of even one year. A pivot is simple enough, but I'm willing to bet that you won't go through this process in the way that is kindest to your body (back and knees in particular) and the potential for strains or even falls on a wet floor is something else to consider.

One word: MISTAKE.
Sorry, but my dishwasher is next to the dishwasher but it blocks a walkway and isn't convenient to the cabinet where glasswear is kept. I already regret it, and it's only been a couple of months. Not only that, but as others have pointed out, the water problem will be compounded if you have a hardwood floor to worry about. For your sake, I hope you've got other options.

I agree with owls4me! If it's the only way to get a DW, then do it.

Mine is at right angles to the sink, and so is my sister-in-law's. If it's opposite the sink, then logically the door will open and the drawer pulls out close to you. You stand sideways - no severe twisting required. Furthermore, most modern dishwasher makers tell you NOT to rinse dishes, just scrape. So, theoretically, proximity to the trash bin is more important.
I give a quick wipe up of occasional drips at the far side, on the floor.

My SIL simply puts a piece of kitchen paper down where the splashes all fall, before loading. When it's all done, she scoops up the paper. All done.

As owls4me says, you'll establish a system.

My dishwasher has always been at a right angle to my sink (2 different houses) and I've never even thought about it as being weird or unworkable. Last house it was a pivot, this house a pivot and a step to get to the DW from the sink. My DW doesn't require pre-rinsing anything and we usually load the it immediately upon finishing up the meal. People bring their plates to the dw instead of the sink. A rug in front of the sink takes care of any dripping prep dishes.

New kitchen will have DW behind and slightly to the right of me as I stand at the sink. It will actually be closer to the sink than my 2 previous - I'm envisioning loading the dishwasher not as standing at the sink and turning completely around to load the dw, but standing in the aisle with the sink on my left side and dw on the right side. Easy-peasy loading, no twisting at all. I don't think it would cause any more traffic jams than it would if the dw was in a cabinet next to the sink. Either way, when the door is down and the racks are pulled out they will be in the aisle space between the sink and the island.

I agree that if it's the only way, go ahead, but I think it will involve twisting and dripping. Even if you don't rinse dishes, they wait in the sink (often getting wet) and you'll need to dump leftover liquid out of glasses, etc. Next to the sink is best...At a 90 degree angle to the sink is next (with cabinets arranged right so it's the door isn't in front of the sink), and behind would be my last choice. At my parents' house we had a dw that was 90 degrees to the sink and, like surveymom, I thought it worked fine. (There was a small bank of drawers between the sink and Lazy Susan corner cabinet, then the dw was on the other side of the corner cab.) But I do think having it right behind you will cause some interesting moves that make my back, neck, and shoulders hurt to think of them. ;-)
