His name was Bob Ross and I always watched his show - he was an amazing painter! He died a few years ago, at quite a young age - sad loss to painters.

My DH loves to paint and took inspiration from Bob Ross.

I just love his paintings and watching him paint. I try to watch him on PBS here in SD every Saturday. I wish I could paint as good as he does. I love to dabble in painting and my mother was an artist. She passed away in 2008 and there were enough of her paintings for each of her 9 children to have one. I have one of an old wooden grain elevator hanging in my living room and I wouldnt sell it for all the money in the world

Bob Ross and some friends visited our antique mall one day and signed our guest register. Wouldn't you know it would be the day I was not there!!!

he would paint a really cool scene but then he would plant a
HUGE old tree right smack dab in the middle! I though ruining everything else he had done! those "happy" trees!
you could tell he LOVED what he was doing... sharing, teaching, inspiring people.

Used to watch him all the time. When I heard that he died, I didn't tell my mom, she loved him, and I knew she'd be upset.

His reruns are still shown on our PBS station.

I remember watching him and how he used to say "and here we'll put in a happy little tree" LOL I always thought it was funny how he'd talk so smooth and soothing and then swish his brush in water and then bang it inside another bucket to shake off the water. Gosh, what was that, 100 years ago? OK, maybe 25? LOL What made you think of him? What else you got to take us down memory lane? :-)

jen, I got home from chemo and hit the couch, pbs was on and there he was with his happy little trees, rocks, clouds LOL

I learned a lot about painting "Happy Little Trees" by watching him.Years ago when I still had time to paint.LOL

Twinkie and I used to laugh that between his painting happy little trees and happy little squirrels - the 60's must have been VERY good to him! LOL

LOVE to listen to his voice. He is still on occasionally on WV PBS. I was guaranteed a peaceful nap when I listened to him. LOL

He is on every week day on PBS here. I have it on, but don't pay a lot of attention. I am not crazy about his paintings...like Kat said...looks like they could have been done on black velvet, but he seems like he was a wonderful person and very kind, and brought inspiration to a lot of people. I was sorry to hear that he died, and also, his wife
preceeded him in death...he mentioned that on one of the programs the other day.

Yes, I remember Bob Ross. Loved his step-by-step directions. I have two places I would love to paint using his method- the door of my food pantry closet and my garden shed door outside. Let me see, where can I buy quick-dry latex paint?

Not only do I remember, but it's on every Saturday morning on our PBS station. Jannie, many of his techniques for grass, water, etc. can be adapted to ordinary craft acrylics. Great fun!

Having never heard of or seen Bob Ross, I went to YouTube and clicked on the first video I found. What? This guy is nuts! LOL

I used to watch him and when I took oil classes I told my teacher that I wanted to go swish, swish, swish and make a tree like he did. She said it doesn't work like that. She made me paint everything in detail and told me that oil painting was 5% talent and 95% hard work. That was a real turn off for me. I didn't want hard work.

I used to watch him years ago, sometimes because I liked to watch him paint and sometimes for his soothing voice.

I started watching him again a couple of years ago, and last year my sister got me a Bob Ross painting set for Christmas. I have such fun with it!

Although my painting is restricted to walls & ceilings I used to watch Bob Ross. Something about his voice was very relaxing, very soothing; the polar opposite of Gilbert Gottfried.

I have always loved his shows and his talent. Seldom get to see him now but you can still buy many of his products.

I remember him fondly for his gentle and quiet manner. He died of lymphoma at age 52. After reading from the link below I learned that he donated all the paintings he did on his show to PBS stations around the country 'to help them out.' He was also something of a wildlife re-haber. "Ross also filmed wildlife footage, squirrels in particular, usually from his own garden. Small animals often appeared on his show, even during some of his trickier works, as he would often take in injured or abandoned squirrels and other assorted wildlife and look after them."

Thank you for posting this Kat. It brought back some memories for me of my youngest brother, Joe.
He decided after watching the show that he wanted to paint.....and paint he did. Maybe 3 or 4 a week in the spring of 1988. He had a showing of his work at my parents when all the family was visiting that summer and he gifted all of us with something that we liked. He passed away that November and I cherish those paintings. I have a typical Bob Ross one with the mountains and that tree lol and a couple others of Vasquez Rocks. Joe had gotten pretty good and it all started with the encouragment of Bob Ross. RIP Joey.
