Are you planning to keep the existing arrangement and add a 2nd seating area near fireplace? I think you need to make that fireplace more of a focal point. The sofa turns its back on the fireplace. That's a huge room. What are the dimensions? Do you have a florrplan if the room you can post with some basic dimensions?
You might need two seating areas with such a large room.

The prior owner's layout worked well. It looks as tho' you have two matching loveseats, so just as a start, I'd try placing them facing each other in front of the fireplace. It looks like there may be room to add you chair to the grouping as well.

Then I'd take another photo and and revisit. Great room!

We have a sofa and loveseat in the other end of the room. This furniture needs to remain around the TV because we are a family of six.

I just wanted to add what an absolutely stunning room you have. One thing that strikes me as odd is the placement of the ceiling fixtures--which are lovely. I think you need to also work that into the planned layout--or consider moving them. As it is now, they just make no sense--everthing else in the room is symmetrical and those aren't.

It must be the angle of the pictures. The fixtures are symmetrical. They are equal distance away from the end walls and they are on the center line of the room.

I would move the chair out of the corner, then slide the loveseat down in its place (or near where it was). Then pull the other loveseat closer and away from the FP. Then put the chair in that open area to the left of that loveseat. This will free up move space for a 2nd seating area in front of the FP.

Consider switching the two chandeliers -- which "concentrate" and divide the room into two areas -- for two track lighting systems which would spread out the light and eliminate those two strong focal points. I've included an example -- JUST an example of that type of lighting.

Just a thought -- how about switching the position of the TV in front of the window -- and re-orient the seating group so that people can see both the TV and fireplace?

In front of the fireplace -- two swivel chairs might work nicely. Or perhaps four chairs around a central round ottoman?

On the end wall (with the door opening to the kitchen and bathroom) perhaps some nice dark bookcases? Ikea's "Billy" system is only 11 inches deep -- so a couple of those would not impeded walkways.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. The room is 32x18. The space in front of the fireplace is 15x17. I don't really want to compress the current seating area because we often have company over and need to be able to pull up extra seating.

I can't re-orient the TV seating group because the wall the TV is on is too small.

I'm not sure how the track lighting would work with the beams.

I like the idea of two swivel chairs.

I might put down cutouts of different arrangements and see if we can live with them.

I think you might consider changing the orientation. Right now it looks to me like all the furniture is crowded to one side of the room, and is fighting for space with the windows and doors.

I would put the tv on the plain wall to the right of the fireplace. Then put the couch on the left side of the fireplace, facing that wall, the loveseat at a right angle to that, table between them with a lamp. The leather chair would go on the right side of the couch, table beside it with a lamp. You might even have the room to add a pair of leather benches or ottomans on either side of the tv for more seating.

I would then create the second seating space on the other side of the room. A round game table down in the corner where the leather chair is now, with four comfy upholstered chairs on rollers.

A pair of comfy reading chairs and a shared ottoman in the area where the tv is now.

That's something I hadn't considered. Then we could watch TV and enjoy the fireplace. I will investigate and see if we can move the fios to the other wall. If we hang the TV on the wall it would not disturb the traffic from the kitchen to the bathroom.

Also, I just ordered a game table for the living room. Its inlaid wood would go great with the wood trim in the family rm.
