Easy off it the best way. It works on a warm oven.
You can put a dish of ammonia in there and "they say" it will soften the goo....NOT!
Easy off....spray it on....close the door, wait a bit....don the rubber gloves and have at it.
the best way is to just use paper towels to mop up the goo...
When we remodeled the kitchen a bazillion years ago I couldn't find a self clean oven to go in one spot....so I have one of my 2 ovens is not self clean. I try to only use it for "clean" stuff....but even cookies exude a certain amount of stuff.

Drain cleaners, like Liquid Plumber, work just like Easy Off except cheaper and less smelly.

Use a brush to brush on. Wear gloves and eye protection ( a must ) when applying.

I think there is safer Easy Off that don't give off fumes like the old one.
A friend would up in the hospital 3 times , after using Easy Off.
Think she would learn after the first time.
They now have a self cleaning Oven .

House Hold Tip.

Use 1 part Baking Soda and 1 part Salt, add enough water to make a paste. Apply to the stains.
Use the oven as you would bake a cake.
Let it cool and wipe the stains off with a dampened paper towel.

Easy Off used to contain lye....drain cleaner used to contain lye....lye saponifies grease.
Easy off comes in a can with a spray nozzle, pretty easy to use. Drain cleaner comes in a plastic jug...e.asy to pour down the drain but not so easy to put on the dirt in your oven. Easy off foams and doesn't run...drain cleaner runs.
I have had occasion to use both in the past couple of weeks.
I don't know what you are calling "fumes"...Easy Off has a smell but it's not a volatile compound.
Baking soda is basic...not acid...it has some slight action on grease....salt works as an abrasive....eventually I suppose it would remove some of the grease on your oven, but an SOS soap pad would work faster and easier.

Forgot an important tip for both using Easy-Off or drain cleaner to clean oven:

Cut open a thin plastic veggie bag flat, and spread it over where you applied the cleaner. this will make the cleaner stay on vertical surfaces and keep the cleaner from drying out or dripping down, and let it sit overnight, or as long as you can.

BTW, the smell of Easy-Off is really the atomized cleaner in the air. Not good at all for your lungs.

And BTW, they do have a few drain cleaners that are like gel consistence.

And BTW, never use these cleaners on aluminum.

There is no other effective way to clean off heavy carbonized grease. As far as I know.

Well, there is one more I sometimes use, but the stuff is a fire hazard, so I will not even give you a hint what that is.

My old electric oven was not self-clean and I found ammonia DID work pretty well. Just pour some in a small dish and use a small piece of cloth of some sort to make a wick...let it hang out a bit over the edge of the dish and let set overnight.
