Freezing fresh brussels sprouts?

I had to go down the canyon today to buy a new washer and dryer. I just went down last week food shopping so I decided to wander around Trader JoeÂs. They had fresh brussels sprouts still on the stock, something you donÂt see often in Bakersfield, I bought 2 stocks and plan to freeze them. Do I need to blanch them or just put them in a freezer bag as is?

Yes, you do need to blanch them. We will be getting ours from my friends farm around the corner this coming week. They don't even sell the sprouts or cabbages until they've had a few little freezes. Makes them sweeter. We always have them for Thanksgiving. Yum. Can't beat on the stalk. Since they're various sizes on the stalk I usually divide them up into the smaller and larger ones so they cook more evenly without turning the small ones to mush. Enjoy.

Thanks coconut that what I thought but I did a quick search last night and several sites I looked at said to just wash and freeze. I cooked some and they are really yummy IÂm going to roast some tonight. These were grown here in Ca. so I doubt they have had any freeze but they were very sweet.

Yes, as Deborah says, don't plant in FL until summer heat is done. Same here in Socal. I tend to believe companion planting advice tends to be more anecdote than science, but overall I believe in polycultures over monocultures. They say alliums are helpful for brassicas. I tend to plant green onions (allium fistulosum) as a cut & come again crop along with other things. They do well as a cool-season crop. Lettuces get along with lots of crops, and as they do well in partly shady conditions and cooler weather, they might do well in the understory with the brussel sprouts.

I don't think the sprouts continue to grow in freezing temperatures. I harvested all my sprouts a few weeks back, and some of them were only the size of a pencil eraser- but still delicious. My only concern was with aphids- yes, there really were a ton, but I washed them in salt water four times, and then blanched and froze them- no more aphids.

This past year was the first time I had roasted them, at the recommendation of one of the TV cooks. And they were wonderful that way. Unfortunately, my garden is Harry's Farmers Market due to living in a townhouse.. The only crops that I can grow are the tomatoes etc in pots and even that's getting iffy because the trees are beginning to block what sun I get. But I can't complain, Harry's keeps a great selection of really good vegetables. Collards, cabbage, every kind of potatoe. But they've got their limitations on brussel sprouts, okra, butter beans and peas. Thanks for the suggestions. Will try the freezing. Beth

I had brussel sprouts in the spring that did squazoo, all summer they sat and grew. They are now over 4' tall and have big sprouts up the stem about halfway and then decrease until tiny tiny at the top. Our spring here was warmish and then bam, right into mid summer in temp. I guess it inhibited the growth. I was patient, actually didn't need that specific space, and it appears I will get produce after all.

You bought a washing machine? Pray tell which brand, where you got it, and did you get an extended warranty? Now what detergent are you using (I NEED A LIFE)?

Well Jessica itÂs a long sad story in 2002 I bought a GE set, in 2005 the washer died so I bought a Whirlpool washer, from Costco, It lasted all of 2 years so I took it back and got my money back. I then bought a Maytag set and 2 years and 3 day later the transmission went out. For some reason this always happens the week before Thanksgiving. DH always asks what kind of washer I am going to buy for my birthday because 4 times now I have had to buy a new washer in the week of my birthday.

ItÂs just the 2 of us I donÂt do large loads I take my comforters to the laundromat. I even take new towels for the first washing so all that fluff doesnÂt go into my septic system. I talk sweet to it every time I use it I turn the water off every time itÂs done, plumbers daughter and dad always said to turn it off and take the pressure off the hoses, so I really donÂt have an answer as to why I canÂt seem to have one last at least 5 years. I use Tide with bleach even though my dad and my plumber say it will eat my pipes. For what itÂs worth my mom used Tide and my plumbers wife says she buys Tide and put it into a glass jar so Keith wonÂt find out. LOL

I did find out yesterday that they are giving really good deals on appliances. I went to the big, at least in Bakersfield, appliance center and bought a GE set for just about what the last Maytag washer cost and they through in the extended warranty for free. So I am covered for 10 years. The good thing is Jim there service guy is almost on my Christmas card list after he came to my house every Monday for almost a year trying to fix the refrig. He is a keeper he finally talked GE into giving me a new one so I wanted him on my team.

DH is having his deliver guys pick them up today so at least I donÂt have to pay the $85.00 delivery charge to come up the canyon. The bad news is DH has been trying to bring home a new Camaro for months and they finally got one in for him to play with, he really want to see how fast he can drive the canyon with it, so he is not bringing the washer and dryer home until Monday then I have to have the propane people come on Tuesday and switch the dryer over from gas to propane. The State of Ca. has decided that DH is just too inept to do that himself anymore so that will cost another 50 bucks plus parts. So If I figured right we have enough clean underwear to last us until next Friday so we should be OK. LOL

IÂm going to ask around and find someone who can use the dryer. Last time I found a young couple who had a new baby who had a washer but really needed a dryer. That was my good dead for that year and one year I traded the dryer with the guy that weed whacks our back hill.

And you think you need a life? I think next year I am just leaving for the month of November. Hawaii is sounding good no turkey just a pig on a spit and a hotel with laundry service.

I keep changing my mind about what veggies I want to serve for Thanksgiving.

We always have home canned green beans (NOT GBC!! LOL).
But, in order to attempt to keep things light (most wanting to eat healthier), I'd like to have a second veggie.

Right now I'm thinking of the steamed green beans plus roasting carrots, asparagus and brussel sprouts. A mixed veggie dish!! Mostly because I can't make up my mind...I want it all!
