Look, look, I got a surcie from Readinglady!

A couple of days ago I found a box on my step. I thought it might be a Christmas present that I ordered for Bruvver, but it wasn't, it was a box from Carol (Readinglady). What a great surprise and since it was Saturday morning and we were on our way to the Wine Festival, Mom got to help me open it.

I found that Carol's been busy canning. She sent me a jar of cranberry catsup, one of cranberry preserves with allspice and one jar of apricot "winter conserve" with almonds and amaretto. That one is mine, I don't intend to share, LOL.

She also sent a jar of very finely ground gray sea salt from the Artisan Salt Company in Washington, pretty close to her home, just a state or so away, LOL. I have mentioned that I don't like getting that big chunk of salt when I finish food with coarse salt and my grinder doesn't get it fine enough for my tastes. This stuff is extra fine, I'm gonna love it!

Then came my mother's favorites, the "beginner's chopsticks". I had an aunt who was from Japan, and my Mother and Aunt Amy were good friends. Aunt Amy tried to teach me to use chopsticks and finally gave up, saying "you no good, you use fork". LOL Mom said she was "no good" either, Aunt Amy was never successful in teaching her to use chopsticks either. Mom thought Aunt Amy would have loved these "chopstick helpers", and they caused Mom to tell me a couple of stories about Aunt Amy that I hadn't heard. It was a nice memory for Mom, and Makayla and Bud are going to love them, I even found a recipe for turkey sushi!

Dutch oven liners were in there, for when I go camping and don't want to scrub that Coke Chicken or whatever from the dutch oven, they'll be very handy.

And finally, Makayla's favorite, the measuring cup. It's made from some special material so you can put really hot liquids in it. What Makayla liked though, was the markings. See the top one? It says "half the volume of a human brain". I told Makayla that she was a little girl, so her brain might not be all that big. She told me she has a pretty big brain for a little girl. (grin) She's right, I couldn't argue with that!

Now, look at the bottom marking. "The volume of the brain of a Tyrannasaurus Rex". LOLOLOL

Carol knows it's been a tough couple of months for me, a lot of changes, some good and some bad. This was a nice "pick me up" and a reminder of one of the things I have to be very thankful for this year: my friends, both virtual and otherwise.

So, thank you Carol, for a thoughtful gift, and for the smile you gave my mother. I might even make sushi and invite her to lunch!

Carol, your posts are always so 'cool' and interesting, it shouldn't come as a surprise that a surcie from you would be any different!

Maggie, I am so glad that everything got there in good shape. Yes I did make the blanket. Hayden has one that is his lovie, the satin side and trim plus the plush side are things babies just love to rub and chew on. We have to take one with us everywhere. The ladybug costume was Rhiannon's first Halloween costume and she has been bugging me to put it on Hayden, I told her I knew a little girl named Grace that would love it. She told me that I should send it to Grace and hopes she likes it. The package was kinda hodge podge of stuff for all the family. We had fun putting it together and hope that everything works for you. This was my first surcie, and I have a feeling that more will be coming, I did send another one that day so we will see if it got there in one piece. Sally, Pat was kind enough to send me a cookbook bt Persian Author Najmieh K. Batmangli called A Taste of Persia Compumom and Anni - recipe follows. I ran two cups of basmati rice through my Nutrimill to grind it into flour. For the recipe you will need 3/4 cup room temp syrup made by boiling 1 1/2 cups sugar with 1/2 cup water. You can save or discard any extra. You will also need 1 cup Ghee. I made this by melting 1 cup butter in a saucepan, covering it and simmering for 18 minutes. Then strain through muslin (I used my yogurt strainer) and cool to just solid. 3 egg yolks 1 Tbsp Sugar 1 cup Ghee or clarified butter 1/2 cup corn oil 1 1/2 tsp cardamon 3 cups rice flour 3/4 cup surup 2 Tbsp Poppy seeds Combine egg yolks and sugar and beat till creamy In another mixing bowl, combine butter, oil, cardamon and flour. Mix well for a few minutes then add yolk mixture and beat for a few seconds. Add the syrup and knead well for a few seconds or until the dough no longer sticks to your hands. Allow the dough to rest for 30 minutes at room temp. Preheat oven to 350. Line baking sheets with parchment. Roll dough into balls the size of hazelnuts, flatten slightly and place on cookie sheet leaving 2" between cookies. Stamp cookies with design using fork (I used a disk from my cookie press) and sprinkle with poppy seeds. Bake 10 - 15 minutes (I did 12 in my Miele on convection). Cookies should still be white or very slightly colored when done. Allow to cool and carefully remove from trays. They crumble VERY easily. NUSH-E-JAN! (which I think is Persian for Bon Appetite - I will ask SIL)

I picked up l8 pots from church. All of those pots are regrowing new lilly plants, and there are multiple plants in each pot, which means multiple stems of the flowers. I am so excited. I feel like I've done a good deed by saving them from the garbage pile. What a waste that would have been.

You know, I saw that cup somwhere on-line, but for the life of me I couldn't remember where, I just remember thinking "now that's cool".

Carol might not be "on line" for a couple of days. She has a big family Thanksgiving "do" coming up and I know she tripped and took a hard fall, so she might still be recuperating.

What fun! I'm embarassed to say that I had to look up "surcie"! With my horse background all I could think of was surcingle and I couldn't imagine getting one of those in the mail!

Enjoy your goodies! I don't think you could use those chopsticks without a big grin on your face!

What wonderful gifts! I love each and every one. I'd have to keep that conserve for myself too. Smiles. Only thing is I keep squinting at that picture trying to read the salt one. Amount of table salt in a large.....Laughing at myself.

Carol, get better soon. I just took a hard fall last month so I feel for you. Annie, I hope things are looking up for you

Annie, thank you for the lovely posting. I didn't even know you'd done that. And do be sure to keep the winter conserve for yourself. You deserve it.

Thanks everyone also for the kind remarks. Who knew barbecuing salmon could be so dangerous? I turned away from the grill, tripped on a power cord strung across the patio and slammed into the concrete full-force and full-face.

Nothing broken, thank goodness, but needless to say I'm not a pretty sight with some good scrapes and a black eye. My brother says I look like "Phantom of the Opera."

Thankfully I am not hosting Thanksgiving this year, so I sent hubby off with the 23-pound turkey (brined in apple cider, salt, brown sugar, cloves, peppercorns and thyme), the gravy, and a banoffee cheesecake from Nigella Lawson (banana cheesecake with a caramel-cream sauce).

I am just not up for company right now but seeing this post was a nice treat.
