Painting Oak Cabinets....Need help picking a white/cream
Comments (5)Look for a thread that says "New To Kitchens? Posting Pics? Read Me!..." or, click here. I have no paint color advice--I used 'Adobe White', an off-white in the creamy range. Here's a link to pics of my soffit, painted the same color (satin finish), with trim painted in the same soft gloss as the cabinets: Here is a link that might be useful: Adobe white cabinets, soffit, trim...See Moreneed help with a warm white/cream interior trim color
Comments (9)What's "creamy" to one is yellow or tan to another! Or even too white! I wish I could suggest a specific color but I really can't. Even though I probably have about 200 different chips of varying degrees of "off-white". I'm not familiar with the wall colors you have except I strongly considered Laura Ashley gold 2 for my bedroom. I recall that it is a complex, muted yellow/tan with green undertone. A really beautiful color. I assume that gold 4 is the same but deeper. I was amazed to see how a trim color can bring out the undertone in the wall or play it down; make the gold look either very green or more yellow or even dirty. So focus first on what undertones you need in your trim color. You already know you don't want blue, gray, pink/peach. You need some yellow but there are so many degrees of it. Take your wall paint chips to the color displays and hold them up--you will easily see which groupings of tones/shades don't work and you will be able to narrow down to the right family pretty easily. Wish I'd done that early on! You might also try taking your paint chips to Home Depot to use their scanner that will analyze your color & suggest coordinating colors from their line. That can at least get you started & when you start to see which tones are appealing to you the most when paired with your walls, you can take those chips with you to Lowes or elsewhere to look for the "just right" selection. Also, if you find a paint chip that has just the right tones but is just too light/white, (or the opposite, like if you wanted to use gold 4 but a lighter version of it) you can ask them to mix it with 150-200% of the colorant. Or cut it in half. I've done this with good success. All that said, I've just done the upstairs hall trim in Behr Navajo White, which to my eye when looked at alone is a creamy, muted yellow-- but looks great (and not yellow) with the several colors it needed to play with. And it took me many visits to paint stores, and many chips on the walls, to settle on my choice, but I don't regret the time I took now. Neither will you! Good luck!...See MorePlease Help! Comments (13)annz - Thanks for your reply! Ideally I'd like more time to choose. I took Forever to pick the wall colors, and drove DH up a wall (I'm surprised we're still married - ha ha!). This is my way of sort of making it up to him, lol. Although Benjamin Moore has some no voc paints that we can get locally, we choose American Pride b/c it's supposed to be non toxic (we have a baby and are renovating the entire house - which we've yet to move into, so I'm trying to be as green and non toxic as possible). sueb20 - Thank you for your suggestions! Yes, I agree that we should paint the doors and trim the same color. (Thanks for setting me straight!) And, thank goodness that the ceiling doesn't need to match the trim exactly. Atrium White and Decorators White are very pretty, but the lighting in our home was not doing them justice. And so, the winner is - Simply White! It looks white, without any gray or blue tint to it. And I like how it has a touch of warmth - as most of our colors are warm, and we have a lot of northern light. It's not my favorite white for our one Beacon Gray bathroom, but it will still look nice. As for the bedroom that will have Mascarpone on the bottom - I'm still a little concerned there b/c Simply White is very close in color and doesn't "pop" like a cooler white would, but hopefully the semi gloss sheen will help with the contrast a bit. We'll see... Overall though, I think Simply White will work really great in our home, and I'm excited to see everything painted! Thank you all again for your replies! You're the best!! :)...See MoreI need help picking wall colors with cream cabinets
Comments (14)Congrats on your new home purchase! Once the terracotta walls are primed and not reflecting you will be able to really pick a nice color to compliment. Your cream cabinets have a lot of red undertones which can read a little on the pink side. The wood on the island and floor also have peachy or orangey tone. So I would avoid like the plague anything with a yellow, green, or blue undertone as that will just make the pink/peach stand out even more. Since the crown molding and trim looks a very bright blue based white, I think you definitely should paint them a neutral white. I liked the SW pure white, but I'd wait until you pick the main wall color. Whatever brand you look at just look for colors that say they are a neutral. I have been searching myself for a nice neutral wall color all day. It's tough! I was at SW, and liked either Repose gray or Agreeable gray from them. They really are not a true gray color like I think of "gray". I'm not a gray fan, but I do like a neutral "greige" as they call it. Both of those colors have a brown taupe undertone. I always look at the deepest shade on the color swatch to see what I'm dealing with. If it is really yellow or green khaki or blue I'd rule those ones out. Hope this helps. I'm no expert so take that fwiw! Ha! Oh and if you are drawn to a touch of gray which has purple undertones, or are interested in a richer more deep color you might like weimeraner. But actually I think anything with purples might pop the peach wood. Oh this one will be a challenge, but I know it will be great! Once you prime your walls, if you want to repost a new picture, I can try to do a mockup for you. Best wishes....See Morehappytobehome
