Have a wedding phototaking question...

In a month or so...What I would like to know (or if anybody can suggest some other sites) is what is the etiquette of another person taking photos (which would be me)...They will have a professional there, and I'm not interested in being a main person picture taker an didn't want to be intrusive with the other photographer....I thought maybe someone here has had experience, or suggestions!

My daughter was married recently....I timed the photos to ensue immediately after the flash of the professional...if I wanted special pics, obviously I could ask the bride and groom to give me a good shot. I came out with almost 200 shots (proud papa, what can I say) I do have a 2 pic mode on my camera, (one flash, other non flash)...I used it a lot for the indoors stuff and selected the best later. Take extra batteries and flash cards depending on your limits.

what about taking through the ceremony? I just want to get a diff view from photgrapher but yet meaninful and not intrusive...Hope I don't sound like an idiot...Should I ask Bride and Groom before hand?

Don't be afraid to take your comfortable and safe shoes along and change at some point later in the festivities - once you've made your appearance no one is going to care if you choose to put something on your feet more typical of what you would usually wear. I've seen brides not accustomed to heels with sneakers under their gowns mid-way through the reception:) You can't have your best time if your feet hurt and this is a day you should enjoy yourself - if it means not confining your feet to skimpy sandals for hours and hours and going home in pain, no one is going to mind you changing your footwear.

My fiance and I decided to use the money that my parents would have spent on a big wedding, and put it towards building our house. We plan on getting married right as the house is finishing up being built. We are going to do a small immediate family only ceremony. But we were planning on having a huge "We Got Married / New House Warming" party at our new house with catered food, open bar w/ bartender and possibly even a live band. Very laid-back, casual party with everyone we know being invited. What is the time line? What you're describing sounds like it could be an informal reception, and I wonder why you don't call it a reception? I then wonder if it could be read into more, maybe your mom is upset that after she gave you money towards the house instead of a wedding, you're now doing your own reception. Are you spending near what she gave you? How does she feel about this party? So here's the question- should we do a wedding registery? I dont know if we should register for gifts since its going to be so casual. I am torn on whether or not to do it. The only person I have talked to about it is my mom. She doesnt think I should because she thinks it might be "tacky" to register for such a low-key event. But then she threw in a comment about how she has sent presents to weddings she didnt even attend. So now she's giving me mixed signals. I would register. People are either going to buy you a wedding gift or something as a housewarming gift, as a guest I'd rather know what you want/need then to guess. We are getting married. There will be a reception. Its just going to be a super laid back party that's tied in with our house warming at the same time. What's a girl to do?! I found your post at the building forum, looks like everyone agrees you should register. I also read some of your building posts and don't doubt you are going to need stuff. Registering will at least give you things you need if they decide to bring a gift. btw, our build was started in October and was done in March. Pretty sure it didn't take long after drywall. Just looked at my pics, by mid January it was sheetrocked and spackled, by March 16th the real front door lock was on, house was done. Here is a link that might be useful: same post at building forum

My heart feels for you Ceph. I had it easy because we were married in Vegas and the nice little chapel we were at did all the leg work. We did have to make some choices though and one was the corsages. We did get corsages for all immediate parents and my grandmother.... including my husbands step mom. Although she is not him mother, she does plan an important role in his life. The bottom line is this is your wedding. You need to do what is right for you...no one else. When you look back on things, how will you feel about choices. Will you regret not doing what your gut originally told you to do? Will it matter about the flowers or will she think the worst no matter what? Do you think you will be going through all this effort to please with no result? Some people just won't be pleased no matter what you do. Interesting side note, my father's significant other showed at our wedding. My dad passed in 2002 and I felt like I should invite his SO not thinking he would show for the wedding. I received his RSVP at the last minute. I was very nervous- my dad's SO's name is David. Now you can see why I was a little nervous. I didn't know how he would behave because - let's say- everyone knows when he walks into a room. To my surprise, he was very tame and when we did the toast, he was the only one the mentioned my Dad in a very respectable manner. He disappeared after the wedding. He didn't come to the dinner and I haven't heard from him since. I did sent a framed picture of him, my husband and I to him at Christmas. In the end, I was very glad he was there. I think I 'm telling this story just to say, sometimes people surprise you. I hope you can have that same kind of experience.

Unless you are very fit and tanned please were hose. I am so glad to see Lynn's post that they are coming back. All those pallid, doughy, sometimes veiny and fat naked jiggly legs are not attractive. Hose smooths things. Legs simply look so much better in them. When ever I see someone dressed to the nines without hose it looks to me like they had a quicky in the cloakroom and lost an item of clothing. UGH

Someone else will have to speak up for during the ceremony...handed my camera to my brother before I walked her down the aisle and he dropped the ball..heh.. IMO the good memory pictures are taken before and right after the wedding. Shows the nervousness of the bride and groom, and pics afterwards show the happiness. During the ritual, not a lot of things happening. If you can position yourself for a good shot of them exiting, that would be a good opportunity too. Just my 2 cents.

I would keep the picture takeing to candids of the ritual and reception. All of the other stuff is what the photog is getting paid to take. The family is paying hin/her for those and other flashes can really mess up a picture.

If it is a large wedding with many in attendance you can put the ball in your court and act like you are part of the proccedings. There are of course many things to consider however it worked years ago for me and helped my portfolio and subsequent sales. Be careful though not to step on the other guys toes. This could prove embarassing at the least. GOOD LUCK, KEEP COOL and get the shot. That is ultimately what counts.

I'm sorry for not responding sooner...but wanted to thank you all for your responses...

Does anybody have ideas on lens? There will be two weddings in Sept that will be attending. I've looked at the 17-35mm, alittle to spendy at the moment...maybe an alternative or third party lens...? thanks in advance!

Have a lens that can open W I D E. (f1.2;f1.4) weddings are dim lite, you'll need it.

Long zoom for the ceremony. Again the paid photog should be the one getting up close and personal.

I would suggest a prime between 35mm -50mm for the rest of the stuff. Maybe a macro.

If you are looking to put together a portfolio, find someone who cant afford a photog and do it for free.

My first two wedding were free, great learning experience. they ended up tipping me a nice chunk.

Yes, and no.

YES- It will be great for tele shots and close up macros.

No- when you want to take some posed shot, say at the reception you'll have to be 50-60 ft away just to fit their faces in, just something to think about.

Your camera has a 1.6 multiplier, right? So, 105mm will be 168mm (converted to 35mm format). I would suggest taking the old kits lens with you as well, you find that you might need it.
