If you have no storage, I would enlarge the space to add more storage. You can use a decorative mirror as the door to the cabinet.

If you have no storgae, why would you care what the current trend is? Medicine cabinets will always be around whether they are trendy or not, they serve a purpose .... storage.

The reason I asked is because my cabinet was not totally recessed and sticks out from the wall about 1.5 to 2". Maybe it was a stupid question.

Not a stupid question at all. I have seen medicine cabinets with an oval decorative mirror on them, which you might look at. I believe they stick out from the wall a little like your old one. Or is there another place in your bathroom for storage, such as above the stool, on the wall beside the sink, etc? If you can make storage somewhere else, then I would just hang a decorative mirror above your pedestal sink.

Our master bathroom is 5'x6'. We have a decorative mirror and a pedestal sink. We hung 2 glass shelves which match the mirror for day to day items.

All other storage is in a cabinet in the next room and I fill the cabinet periodically with extras that we keep in the basement (TP, for example).

I'd love a medicine cabinet but not having one is no problem. Do you what you like!

I;m not a fan of medicine cabinets. Never have been, never will be. IMHO there's not enough room in one for normal sized items. You can put meds in there but with kids I think it's a lousy idea. A locked box up high and out of reach is a better solution.
I'd be more incline to use a nearby closet or a over the door a shoe bag to put things in.

I like having his and her medicine cabinets...but your right to ask. The trend is to have skinny cabinets on top of the counters like these:

My bathroom is long and narrow - about 4' x 9'. I have a closet right outside the bathroom that I use for storage but was thinking in terms of resale and what buyers want these days. That's why I asked since the cabinet is the only storage in there. Having a vanity would be better than a pedestal sink but it was there when we bought it and I can't remodel right now. I understand pedestals give the feeling of more room and I think that's why the previous owners installed them.

I think it's crazy not to have a medicine cabinet in a master bath with a pedestal sink. Our bath has a linen closet, small vanity, and medicine cabinet. The cabinet is extremely handy and holds lots of stuff for both dh & I.

While I don't think they are necessarily the trend right now the functionality can't be beat. Especaiilly in a small bathroom where storage is much needed. I had hope to incorporate something like this medicine cabinet into my remodel until I realized it was going on an outside wall and didn't want to lose the insulation.

Just because it's a medicine cabinet it doesn't have to look like anything more than just a mirror.

i would absolutely replace it with another medicine cabinet...i know i would want the storage! but, you might look into whether you can enlarge/alter the recess so that you can choose the cabinet you like best for over the sink!

I think that as long as the items that are located within the cabinet can be concealed then I'm all for it. I just hate when people remove all the storage in the bathroom and then create open storage that looks cluttered.

Must admit I saw "out" and thought "Say what?". I have a very small bathroom. Can't imagine where I'd put little things like nail clippers, band-aids, etc. if I didn't have a medicine cabinet. Look around for something that suits your space.

I built 2 years ago, have 3 full baths, and not 1 medicine cabinet~~my choice. I keep meds in a drawer in the kitchen, which works fine having no small children, and the grands don't seem to be curious enough to open drawers, only cabs. If that changes, will move things around, but still won't miss not having a medicine cabinet. ;o)

We just bought a 72 inch medicine cabinet in our master bath reno. I don't care for the "look" of a medicine cabinet, so this one looks like a full length mirror. No frame and totally inset. Its huge! Just a thought if you have space somewhere else.

If I were a home buyer looking at a master bath with a pedestal sink & no medicine cabinet, my thought would be, "Why on earth doesn't this house have storage?" But then, I don't think they're necessarily unattractive, either.

They have a lot of different styles. I would for sure want one for storage! I'd be using the cabinet AND looking for other creative ways to have storage in there.

We put 3 medicine cabs in our new master bathroom.
Try IKEA for reasonably priced ones. We put 2 over the toilet (stacked) from IKEA and a Broan Sonata with matching sconces over the sink. I love having storage. No way do I want feminine products out on open shelving and they are great for makeup in little baskets from the dollar store. I am just so thrilled to be moving my stuff out of our family bathroom and having my own space... er... I mean our own space, away from the kids ;) You cannot have too much storage in a bathroom.

When I re did my master bath, I put in a 3 door mirrored cabinet...had the contractor remove a stud and recessed it into the wall. I can't imagine a bathroom with out all the storage you can find. I eked out another space between the studs on another wall. It holds things like spray bottles of cleaners, spot removers, extra shampoo and soap....all easily fit into a 4 inch deep cabinet.

Why on earth? Homes built early in the 1900s pretty much always lacking storage. Why? Because homeowners didn't have so many clothes or other crapola!

I'm another who does not like medicine cabinets. We have not had them in the 3 houses we've lived in (tore them out of house #1). However, based on some of the suggestions here, it might work for you. Do you have other alternatives? I've never had a master bath without a vanity, so I'm thinking about all the items we have in ours, and we have a double (his/hers). Do you have a closet in the room or is there room for chest of some type?

We don't store medicine in the bathroom either.

In the kitchen here too. Medicine cabinet is a misnomer. It does provide handy storage.

I have a large closet right outside the bathroom in the hallway. So I can store things there. My thought was around resale someday I guess. This house is 60 years old so both bathrooms have medicine cabinets. They were obviously remodeled at some point and pedestal sinks were installed.

Maybe it's not that big of a factor for me because it's a small home without an open floor plan, the kitchen is a galley-style that is separate from the LR/DR, so I think I've struck out about now on all counts!

I love medicine cabinets, and can't imagine not having them. We've done two bathrooms, a master and a kid's bath, and both had lots of cabinetry plus medicine cabinets. I feel like I use cabinetry differently than I use the medicine cabinet. I like having all my stuff right at eye level, especially as my nightly routing seems to get more complicated every year!

Here's a shot of ours - you can get a whole lot of stuff in there, and when it's closed you can barely tell it's a medicine cabinet and not a mirror.
