We finally finished up the mudroom entry/powder room project. It's amazing how the little finish details take forever. Once the trim was up, I was thinking we were mostly done, but it took almost as long, if not longer, to finish the sanding, caulking, painting, stenciling, etc. Since we only have a couple of hours after the kids go to bed, it was slow going and not the most efficient process. I'm hoping that I don't get bored of this any time soon bc it was much too time consuming.

Anyway, here is the finished powder room:

and the finished mudroom entry area. I'd like to get a nicer looking set up for the dog bowls (not like the dog cares....):

Given the limited amount of space you have, I think you've come up with a pretty good design. The main issue I have is that, in sketching your design I think you have underestimated how much space you need in the powder room and I don't think you have taken wall thicknesses into account quite correctly. It looks like you scaled your drawing to one square = 6". thus the walls around your powder room are only drawn about 2.5 to 3 inches thick. With 2x4 framing, walls are slightly over 4" thick once you get them sheetrocked on both sides. Then, you've sketched the toilet as being only about 16 inches from front to back. Round front toilets actually jut about 25 to 28 inches out from the wall and elongated ones jut as much as 32 inches out. Then, most codes require at least 21 inches of standing space in front of the toilet. Even a small, wall mounted sink will generally stick out 16" to 18" from the wall. So, with a toilet and sink across from each other, you'll probably need 5.5 ft (66 inches) from wall to wall in the bathroom. You might be able to squeeze the size down a few inches by using a small corner sink like the ones in the link below but I wouldn't try to make the powder room's interior dimensions less than 32" x 60" An exterior door is usually 36" wide (although it is possible to purchase 32" wide exterior doors) and it needs a couple of extra inches on each side for trim and hardware. You haven't taken that space requirement into account. All this means that, in order to fit into the space you have, your cubbies, cupboards, and bench are all going to have to shrink down a little bit. Those things are more flexible tho and frankly, I don't see any better options for using the space than the one you've come up with. Good luck! Here is a link that might be useful: small sinks

I absolutely love your room. The color is beautiful and one I would choose. I would definitely put the trash can next to the toilet. But remember it doesn't have to be just another ugly trash can, think outside the box, I had to do that for some tight spaces. I used a beautiful tall metal French flower bucket for one, they come in all colors and even artistically painted. And an antique crockery jug in another tight space, and they add a decorative touch with interest since they are seen from the door. But other options are planters, they come in all shapes, sizes, and colors and materials. That powder room is too beautiful for some random regular trash can lol!

If you could like a weathered look, the James Martin “Providence” 26” in Driftwood is a wood tone close to your red oak. It is a simple one door cabinet, but the way it is made, with corner pillars, helps to hold it together more solidly for when you have to start carving holes in the bottom and back for those crazy pipes. You do realize that any cab you get will be pretty much gutted for those pipes, right? If you are very lucky, you may be able to get a shelf in there after the cab is in place. You will need someone with carpentry skills to install this vanity around that tangle of pipes. The Ronbow Genova 30” in Sable Elm is another one you may like in a wood close to your oak. Note that when you look at the tops, there are two versions of the Carrara, one is the thicker 2” version. This cab is just doors with one pretty nifty shelf inside. Click on “specification sheet” and you can see the drawing. The shelf has a cut-out for the plumbing in the center, and does not go all the way to the back. Maybe you can keep it! Someone willing to measure and figure can estimate this. I heard that Ronbow has gone out of business, so if you like any of theirs, order soon, I would not expect them to be around long.

I agree with Little Bug that if you have to actually go into the mud room to use it, no one will (at least no one in my family would). I'm not a pro but can we see the rest of the space? I am assuming the door in your picture is the one that leads to the garage. I think it would work best if the area is one big space (which means removing the door) than treating it as a separate room.

gobruno, it looks great! We just did board and batten in our entry foyer and it was such an easy and inexpensive way to add some charm - it looks great in your house!

Where did you get that fabulous rug?? Looks sort of like Jonathan Adler? Love it!

Very nice job! How tall is the ceiling in your bathroom? I ask because we have a 1/2 bath with 10' ceiling and want to do something to break up the height.

I got the rug on Overstock. It's an indoor/outdoor rug and works great in that space bc it's really low maintenance and a nice size. The one thing that I messed up on with the rug is that it's actually slightly too big for that space. Well, it fits exactly, but for the air vent, which I forgot to account for. I don't know why our builder made some air vents flat and flush to the ground and others like the one in the powder room where they stick up out of the floor. Anyway, if you can see in the bottom left hand corner, the rug curls up slightly against the air vent. I've been trying to come up with a solution for this, including binding the rug to make it a tad smaller. Oh well.

Funny you should mention Jonathan Adler. I love his design style, his happy chic aesthetic, and so many of his products.

Oops! Annz, the ceilings are 10 feet. We wanted to break up the height as well. My first attempt was kind of lame, and I like this much more. We found it funny that we wanted these really high ceilings and then in some rooms, we wanted to create an effect that would bring the ceiling down!

As for the now ubiquitous "Keep Calm" phrase, it's actually a decal and not a stencil; so, we could take it down really easily at any time. In our trendsetting defense, we've had it for several years before it got so popular. ;) Since we have 5 kids and a crazy dog and a pretty crazy (but fun) and action filled everyday, this is pretty appropriate, and it takes a lot more for us to feel that anything is over the top. Plus, this is the entry from our garage to our mudroom and not front and center in our home.

Love it! Looks just like a page out of a magazine!! And I like that decal on the door! I could certainly use that little reminder in my face everyday! You have inspired me to want to try that board/batten look in a room in my house..maybe my son's room...hmmmmmm

Thanks again for the nice comments. I used 1 x 4 preprimed mdf for the board and batten. There are a lot of tutorials on blogs about how to do it, and I consulted all of them. One detail that I like is that we put a piece of cove molding on the bottom between the baseboard and the horizontal bottom board to create a more gradual transition between the baseboard and the bottom board. I love walking into that space from the garage, and since it's our most used entry way, I thought it was more than worthwhile to acutally make it a nice space.

gobruno, here's a shot of our DIY board and batten in our foyer. Like your space, our foyer gets a lot of traffic and coats, shoes, bags were constantly gathering on the floor in there. I do need a very narrow bench for my little ones to sit on and take their shoes off and on in there, cause i'm always tripping over tiny little shoes in there. :)

Pipdog, I love it! I especially like the hooks and lighting fixture. It's neat to see everyday people tackle projects like this that have such high impact. I know that seeing other people doing it has given me the courage to attempt it in my own home. Great job and thanks for sharing!
