Marmite, ugh!

Recently, I saw a recipe in the local newspaper which called for a bit of marmite. I had never heard of marmite. The clerk at the store hadn't either, but she found it for me next to the other condiments. $6 for a tiny jar! Oh, well, give it a try. At home I dipped the tip of my finger into the dark brown paste, tasted it, and found it quite repulsive. Never would I add it to gravy or spread it on toast. I had my wife taste it. Same reaction. I tossed it. Lesson learned. Anyone have experience with this fermented yeast? Did I fail to use it correctly or give it a fair chance?
