sweet and sour meatballs question

I'm making these for a church potluck on Tuesday, and looking at different recipes, I see where some recipes call for maraschino cherries.

Have you ever had sweet and sour meatballs with cherries?

My recipe calls for green pepper and pineapple chunks.

Was thinking about adding cherries. What do you think?

I think it sounds gross, but I know that I once made meatballs where the sauce was half Heinz chili sauce and half grape jelly and they were a massive hit, so who knows!

I would probably stick with your recipe and maybe set a little aside to try with the cherries so you can see if you like it, and if you don't, you don't ruin the whole batch.

My advice is to stick it out for a while. Sweet cherries take a while to fruit. It may take a couple more years before your trees are in full production. But sooner or later, with that many cherry trees, you are going to have enough fruit to feed the critters and yourself too. And there is nothing better than cherries right off the tree. I live on the West Coast, far from you, so maybe others will have better advice to give, but I think your critter problems are, if not solvable, at least controllable. I use Mylar tape to scare away birds. It isn't foolproof, but it deters enough of them so that I can get a crop. Some people use bird netting, which is probably more effective but may require you to disentangle the occasional bird from the netting. You can kill aphids and white flies organically by spraying occasionally with a mixture consisting of 1 Tbsp. of Dawn liquid dish soap and 1 cup of vegetable oil per gallon of water. I don't have a squirrel problem. I will defer to others about how to solve that. Some of the solutions I've seen on this site involve the use of controls that aren't permitted in populated areas, but there are perhaps other things you can try, and maybe the squirrels aren't your principal problem. Neat skillet set, PK! I love Corningware all over again! I have some casseroles that are from the early 1970s, some Grab-its for soup, and now I have a cute squaty 6 cup tea kettle for boiling water. It heats up so fast I am amazed! Do try the chili sauce and grape jelly meatballs, they are really good. I've made the cranberry version too and like that as well. I like to put a TB or two of dried onion soup in with the chili sauce and grape jelly version. Not a whole package of the dried soup, just a little bit.

This is the only recipe I use when I make S&S meatballs. It is the basic recipe from my Betty Crocker cookbook from the 80's. I may add more of an ingredient(more soy sauce or pineapple chunks) to get the taste I want, but this is the starting point. We use this recipe when we cater and for family gatherings. Never any leftovers. Sweet and Sour Meatballs 25 small meatballs (1"-1 1/2") 1/2 cup packed brown sugar 1 TBSP cornstarch 1 13.5 oz can pineapple chunks w/juice 1/3 cup vinegar 1 TBSP soy sauce 1 green pepper chopped Cook meatballs in a large skillet, remove. Drain fat if there is any. Stir brown sugar and cornstarch in hot skillet. Stir in pineapple chunks w/juice, vinegar, and soy sauce. Heat to boiling, stirring constantly. Reduce heat. Add meatballs back into skillet and stir making sure all are coated with the sauce. Cover and simmer stirring occasionally for 10 minutes or so. Add the green pepper, cover and simmer for 5 minutes. You can serve them over rice, as a grinder, or just by themselves kept warm in a crockpot. Enjoy! NancyLouise

I got this recipe from my sister-in-law. Sweet & Sour Meatballs Meatballs: 1 lb ground beef 1 egg 1 pkg onion soup mix Â½ cup milk Sauce: Â¾ cup brown sugar Â¼ cup vinegar 1 Tbsp cornstarch 1 can pineapple pieces with juice 1 cup ketchup 1 Tbsp soya sauce Mix meatballs and fry until brown. Combine all sauce ingredients and add meatballs. Put in casserole dish, cook in a 350 degree oven for 30 minutes. Serve over rice.

No cherries here either...I think it would be too sweet...If you want to add the color, toss in a few after they are done just to make them look nice...

I've done the chili sauce and grape jelly tons of times.

Just wanted your opinions on adding the cherries.

Thx, I don't think I will. Just add the green pepper and pineapples

I have never seen it with cherries either but have with pineapple. I am not a big fan of cherries unless they are fresh cherries I do like those when they are in season.

I was just comparing recipes, and came across one or two with cherries, and thought I'd ask the KT.

Here' the recipe I am using NO CHERRIES

1 can (20 ounces) pineapple chunks
1/3 cup water
3 tablespoons vinegar
1 tablespoon soy sauce
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
3 tablespoons cornstarch
1 batch of 30 meatballs (frozen or thawed)
1 large green pepper, cut into 1-inch pieces
Hot cooked rice

Directions
Drain pineapple, reserving juice. Set pineapple aside. Add water to juice if needed to measure 1 cup; pour into a large skillet. Add 1/3 cup water, vinegar, soy sauce, brown sugar and cornstarch; stir until smooth.
Cook over medium heat until thick, stirring constantly. Add the pineapple, meatballs and green pepper.
Simmer, uncovered, for 20 minutes or until heated through. Serve with rice. Yield: 6 servings.

This is a hit everytime and oh-so simple.

Using a package of frozen meatballs, place frozen meatballs in crockpot. Add one bottle barbeque sauce and two-thirds of a small bottle of aprocot jam. Stir together and place on high for two hours-- ready to serve and people will be asking for the way you made them.

Your meatballs sound good, Glenda. I probably would add them since I'm a sucker for marachino cherries. Since you've made them it's easier to decide depending on how sweet they are already.They would add a pretty color.

I made some not long ago and used store-bought meatballs which were pretty good. But my sauce turned out so sweet we had it for dinner twice and then tossed it. Hated throwing out all those meatballs :-( My recipe called for 50, I believe. I didn't bother to save the recipe.

patti, I didn't need the cherries.

The sauce was excellent.

Came with an empty dish and got raves on them.

Man at my table went back for seconds.
