I'm not sure I would eat anything growing out of used kitty litter, but good for them! I wish our climate was such that things would thrive on neglect.

One year my sister had one come up volunteer in her gravel drive. She said it did better than any of the others she'd planted and tended in good soil and she got more tomatoes that tasted better from it.

My best basil one year was a plant that came up in the crack in the sidewalk.

Might be some sort of secret wisdom reveled here. Maybe go get some too ripe to sell tomatoes from the Farmers Market trash and go toss them around your property. See what happens. Gardening by Chance.

I don't think I'd want to eat anything grown in kitty litter, but we had a Sweet 100 plant volunteer next to the front porch, from seed dropped by a Topsy-Turvy planter the year before. We just left it alone, figuring it wasn't hurting anything. It got sun until noon and then shade, and ended up growing up the wall and clear across the porch and then climbing up the screen door. It was gi-normous. We were picking tomatoes from it for Thanksgiving! It produced as much or more than the ones planted in the garden. Go figure!

A watermelon tossed out into the sheep pasture did much the same thing, but the chickens found all the melons and stripped them down to bare shells before they were fully ripe.

I didn't know you were into torture.

Every year someone had great weather and great tomatoes and someone else does not. This year we're in the group that does not. Next year likely will be better.

If reading those success stories makes you sob, then maybe you should stop reading them. : )

I haven't visited the Tomato Forum since I stopped watering my tomatoes. It is easier to cut off the tomato addiction cold turkey. If I can't harvest them and eat them, I don't want to read about them!

I think sour grapes are more plentiful than sweet whines, but I like to think both serve a purpose.

Some of the best tasting tomatoes I had a couple of years ago were from seeds out of tomato off the salad bar in a pizza joint that we ate at just after Christmas.

PHJ.... By the time I had read the tomatoe hit the kitty litter I was on full frontal grin. I assume your story was tongue in cheek(at least that is how I took it) and I THOUGHT IT WAS HILARIOUS.

I have about 15 tomato plants in my front flower bed that are volunteers. I'm assuming the birds planted them because I've only previously planted tomatoes in the back. The tomatoes I planted in the back look awful. I thought I was going to lose them. The volunteers in the front are doing awesome. Not many tomatoes yet because they haven't gotten ripe, but the plants look great. They look nicer than flowers I planted there that got burned up by this summer's heat.

Telow, I assumed he was kidding too, but was afraid to go to the Tomato Forum to see if someone actually did have tomato plants growing in cat litter. Stanger things have happened.....

Do NOT eat anything growing out of cat littler! Cats harbor more parasites and germs than you can imagine! Just leave them for the birds and bugs!
