Sweet and sour meatballs (recipes please)

Well, it's Thanksgiving here this weekend and I am hosting turkey lunch on Sunday. I want to make sweet and sour meatballs as a side too. Anyone have any recipes they love. The couple times I tried I didn't have much luck. thanks.

Oh! Cookie! I know this isn't a traditional sweet and sour meatball recipe, but you just GOTTA try it. I HATE sauerkraut, but love, love, love these meatballs.

SWEET AND SOUR MEATBALLS

Meatballs:
2 lbs. ground sirloin
1 can French-fried onion rings
1 egg

Sauce:
1 jar chili sauce
1 jar water (in bottle for chili sauce)
1 can whole cranberry sauce
1 can sauerkraut, drained (don't be deterred by this)
1 cup light brown sugar.

Preheat oven to 350ÃÂ° F. Mix meatball ingredients and form meatballs. Put all sauce ingredients in saucepan and bring to a boil. Pour over the meatballs; Cover and bake for one hour; uncover and bake an additional half hour.

Thanks Pat. Do you think I could pair this with turkey? Oh, as I type I see the can of cranberry sauce so I will take as a yes. I keep my turkey dinner to the bare bones - turkey, gravy, mashed potatoes, stuffing and a veggie and I don't ever try to add anything extra to anything. Almost every other meal gets that treatment but never my turkey dinners. Sounds like these meatballs can make it less boring for everyone else.

What I stated as to needed ingredients and added acid would be quite safe. Pineapple and added vinegar will offer sufficient acidity to BWB can, no matter what was stated above. I would use mostly dried sweet peppers and NO carrots, so that whatever is added is either naturally high in acid or soaks up the acid in the liquid. Clear Jel is the ONLY thicker recommended for home caning and it remains stable after canning and holds up very well to any and all high acid foods. Ketchup, and tomato paste are also hgh in acid. The only ingredients lower in acid are the peppers and onions, and if you use dried, there will be absolutely no safety issues of any kind. The BBB may list list one, but because COMMON SENSE is used here, and all of the product will get acid added, it will can very safely. I may decide to make some too, and add the unusual taste of leechee nuts which have the texture of pears, but have a taste like no other. A local Chinese resturant makes a sweet and sour sauce with sweet mixed pickles and even red cherries. Its served over batter fried fish or chicken. The txture is like it was made with corn syrup and is very sticky, compared to store bought. I use crushed pineapple in mine too. Carrots are better if stir fried with a few other veggies, even fresh sweet peppers and onions stir fried. You should not be afraid of the recipe if its modified like I stated as its never going to get you sick or go bad with all the acid it contains, from pineapple and also cider vinegar. To get it even more sour you can also add bottled lemon juice and/or citric acid. Without 'invention' where would we be today? Keep in mind that your not reinventing the wheel or making a dangerous concoction of poison.

Mine is similar but uses a BWB. Food.com Bread and Butter Pickles 25 cups sliced pickling cucumbers 3 onions, thinly sliced 3-6 cloves garlic, sliced ÃÂ¼ cup coarse or pickling salt 4 cups cracked ice 3 cups cider vinegar 3 cups sugar 1 scant teaspoon turmeric ÃÂ½ + 1/8 teaspoon celery seed 4 teaspoons mustard seeds ÃÂ½ tsp cloves, whole Hot peppers, sliced (OPTIONAL) Method 1. Combine cucumbers, onions, salt and ice in a large bowl. 2. Mix well. 3. Put a weight on and allow to stand 3 hours. (For a weight, I use a plate with a gallon bottle of vinegar or water on top of it). 4. Drain thoroughly. 5. Bring a large pot of water to boil for a BWB. Place clean glass jars in water to get and keep them hot. 6. Bring a small pot of water to boil and reduce to simmer. Place lids in simmering water to soften the gel. Do not boil. 7. Combine vinegar, sugar, turmeric, celery seed and mustard seed in a large pot. 8. Add drained cucumbers. 9. Place pot on medium low heat. Bring almost to a boil, but DO NOT ALLOW TO BOIL. Remove from heat and ladle pickles into hot jars, wipe rims, seat lids and finger tighten rims. I WILL SOMETIMES USE UP 3/4 OF THE PICKLES then add hot peppers to the remainder to make hot pickles for dh. Make sure to mark which jars are hot. Sharpie pens work well and won't come off in the BWB. Seal in sterilized jars, 10 minutes in a hot water bath. Easy way to sterilize jars: Keep them in BWB for at least 10 minutes until you need them

I saw on Rachael Ray, that she put them in muffin tins and baked them. They would be less fattening that way. But I was wracking my brains trying to remember who did the meatballs that I'm looking for................EUREKA! I finally remembered. Tyler Florence! So I looked it up on FoodNetwork and here it is............... Spaghetti and Meatballs Recipe courtesy Tyler Florence 6 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 1 medium onion, chopped 2 cloves garlic, chopped 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh parsley leaves 1 cup milk 4 thick slices firm white bread , crust removed, cut into cubes, about 2 cups 2 pounds ground beef 2 pounds ground pork 1 egg 1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan, plus more for serving Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 1/2 pound mozzarella cheese , cut into 10 (1-inch) cubes Heat 3 tablespoons oil in an ovenproof skillet over medium heat; cook the onions, garlic, and parsley until softened, about 10 minutes. Scrape out onto a plate and allow the mixture to cool; set the pan aside. Pour the milk over the bread into a medium bowl and let it soak while the onions are cooling. Combine the meats in a large bowl and add the egg and Parmesan. Season with salt and pepper. Squeeze the excess milk from the bread and add the bread to the bowl along with the cooled onion mixture. Using your hands, gently combine all the ingredients until they are thoroughly mixed. Don't overmix or the meatballs will be tough. Divide this mixture into 10 pieces and form them into patties. Place a mozzarella cube onto each patty and bring up the sides around the cheese to form a ball completely enclosing the cube. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Heat the remaining oil in the skillet over medium heat and brown the meatballs on all sides, about 10 minutes. Put them into the oven and bake until the meatballs are cooked through, about 15 minutes.

I got this recipe from my sister-in-law. Sweet & Sour Meatballs Meatballs: 1 lb ground beef 1 egg 1 pkg onion soup mix Â½ cup milk Sauce: Â¾ cup brown sugar Â¼ cup vinegar 1 Tbsp cornstarch 1 can pineapple pieces with juice 1 cup ketchup 1 Tbsp soya sauce Mix meatballs and fry until brown. Combine all sauce ingredients and add meatballs. Put in casserole dish, cook in a 350 degree oven for 30 minutes. Serve over rice.

This is the only recipe I use when I make S&S meatballs. It is the basic recipe from my Betty Crocker cookbook from the 80's. I may add more of an ingredient(more soy sauce or pineapple chunks) to get the taste I want, but this is the starting point. We use this recipe when we cater and for family gatherings. Never any leftovers.

Sweet and Sour Meatballs

25 small meatballs (1"-1 1/2")
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1 TBSP cornstarch
1 13.5 oz can pineapple chunks w/juice
1/3 cup vinegar
1 TBSP soy sauce
1 green pepper chopped

Cook meatballs in a large skillet, remove. Drain fat if there is any. Stir brown sugar and cornstarch in hot skillet. Stir in pineapple chunks w/juice, vinegar, and soy sauce. Heat to boiling, stirring constantly. Reduce heat. Add meatballs back into skillet and stir making sure all are coated with the sauce. Cover and simmer stirring occasionally for 10 minutes or so. Add the green pepper, cover and simmer for 5 minutes.
You can serve them over rice, as a grinder, or just by themselves kept warm in a crockpot. Enjoy! NancyLouise

I am cooking them right now and that is one ugly sauce. Ha ha. My husband came home with an asian inspired chili sauce so I hope that is okay or even better - what is called for. I forgot to tell him to go the the relish aisle. He also came home with a mammoth container of sauerkraut so I filled up the cranberry tin with the same amount of sauerkraut.

Cookie be careful with the Asian chili sauces , they can be very hot!

This is a great sweet and sour recipe for most meat. To make sweet and sour meatballs, chops or chicken--first brown the meat.

After the meat is browned, put it in an oven proof dish and mix up the sweet and sour sauce.

SWEET AND SOUR SAUCE

1 can tomato soup
3/4 cup vinegar
3/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 to 1 teaspoon chilli powder.

Mix in a bowl and pour over meat. Bake @ 350 for 1 hour
