cabinet at the end of run next to penisula

On an L shape kitchen, we will have a wall of cabinets that are about 14 feet long. There is a peninsula with dishwasher and sink on the short part of the L. Would it look odd to now have the upper cabinets on the long run go all the way to the end of the peninsula? ie: in the corner of the L. I figure that no one can reach into that cabinet anyway, as its in a corner. I hope I described that well enough to be understood.

How would it look if the upper only came to the edge of the counter top of the short end of the L? ie. You can reach into the whole cabinet standing in front of it.

You don't need to go all the way to the end of the counter with cabinets, but I think it'd look like something's missing to stop at the corner. I stopped several inches from the end of the counter. I used an open display shelf for the last cab, but I also thought of using a glass cabinet or the quarter round open shelf that cabinet manufacturers sell.

When we tile the backsplash, we'll tile from the end of the upper cab. If you leave empty wall over your peninsula, you'll have a tiling dilemma.

I usually take the cabinets to the corner. You can access the space for less used items with a step stool. It's never for everyday access, but no storage is ever "wasted" storage. Especially in small kitchens.

The only exception has been where a homeowner has a large piece of art or TV that they want to place in that spot. It is an ideal place for viewing the morning weather from the overhang at the breakfast bar.

You might have a code issue with that window...you see how ours is offset by just a few inches from the window? Our original plan was range to the wall and the window (which would give us another warming cabinet). But code didn't allow it. If it is allowed, think carefully about window treatments. You'd want to be keeping them inset in the frame and really on the top in general but if you need shade, think of the materials as they'll be in the splash zone of a busy cook (ours are bamboo with a fire retardent spray on them specially ordered, and we're further away than you will be). You aren't really at the end of a run if you are going to do the baking center idea. I'd seriously consider maybe moving that or making it a tiny bit smaller (or the cabinet next to it) so you can keep the 36" range...but again, check the codes on the window issue before you get all fired up about the plan! If you move the baking center down a foot, leave all else as is, it would allow you the ability to put a cabinet above the 1' counter on that side of the range and a small spice pull out type cabinet, which fixes all of your issues :)

Late to the game! First, I agree about running the cabinet to the end of the wall rather than a corner cab...to me, corner cabs that just hang there w/no other upper cabinets on both sides look "off". Second, I also agree the cabs at the end of the peninsula should end "short" of the peninsula end, but I don't think it has to be 12" short. Our upper cabinets end approx 1" b/f the base cabinets do and then there's a 1.5" overhang over the base cabs...so the upper cabs end approx 2.5" before the peninsula as a whole does. We have had no problems with bumping into the upper cabs and we use that peninsula for food staging, baking, etc. Our Pet Center is next to the wall facing out and still no issues with the upper cabinets. I would suggest stopping maybe 3" from the end, but no more. Third...your cooktop & sink proximity...they are very, very close to each other with virtually no workspace b/w them. I very, very strongly suggest moving that 3-drawer stack that's currently to the left of the cooktop to the other side of the cooktop. That would at least give you a little bit of work space. Last...the base corner susan you have in the peninsula. Consider, instead, a 27" wide cabinet turned 90 degrees so it faces out instead. It is a better use of space than a corner susan and much, much better than a blind corner cabinet. That would allow you to move that drawer base to the right of the cooktop (suggested previously) and still have a 12" or so wide set of drawers or a tray/cutting board cabinet to the left of the cooktop. Here's mine...with the upper cabinets and a cabinet turned 90 degrees. Pet Center is the base cabinet on the left that has a drawer on top. The doors on the right are decorative doors only. This is what it looks like from the "inside"... (I now store my KA mixer in that corner. I use that peninsula as part of my "Baking Center".)

Re: the outswing door setup, a couple of things to keep in mind: Make sure there are not any permitting issues related to having an outswing door. Our installer said that sometimes comes up depending on what city he is working in; but it wasn't an issue for us. Think about whether you are comfortable forgoing a screen or having a retractable screen that will be mounted on the inside of the door trim. You cannot have an exterior mounted screen with a patio door that has an outswing. We decided to install a retractable screen on the inside as we will have the door open frequently from spring through fall. (the screen is not in yet, otherwise, I would share a picture - you can see lots of examples on Houzz) Another benefit we find to the outswing door if you have a handle (vs. knob) is that it's so much easier to open when you are carrying a platter of food out to the deck / grill! We didn't realize this added feature until the door was installed and I love it! As long as the above items are not issues for you and you have enough clearance for the door to swing out to the deck, I say go for it!

Kiwigem, thanks for the info on the Fisher and Paykel but it is way too small for us. We are 5 adults, Mom and Dad and three adult kids. Add to that the various girlfriends/boyfriends that seem to have taken up residence here at various times (at least they buy their own food LOL) we need all the space we can get.We currently have a 30 cu.in. SXS and an upright freezer in the basement and there are days that it still isn't enough. Still confused on placement. I need to post my plans and see what you guys come up with. I am always so amazed at your suggestions.

Our end cabinet of the three starts at the corner and I can comfortably reach the first two shelves.

It's 39 1/2". We added 12" of cabinetry behind the sink base/DW/ trash cabinets for storage and display on the DR side. I also wanted splash space behind the sink. We had a raised bar to contain splash/grow mold before the remodel.

I'm just posting the pic.

PS - I love May Flowers open shelving on the back of her peninsula. If we weren't aiming for seating, I would definitely look at something like that.

Agree no storage is wasted. My upper cabs extend to the end of the lower peninsula and I can reach all but the top shelf, but my lower cabs are standard lower depth, no overhang on the peninsula because no seating behind. My friend has a wide one with seating and her cabs also go to the end, but her upper cab also opens from the side (normally the end panel) and she hides her charging station and stuff she doesn't use that often (pitchers, ramikins, etc) in there. Looks like one cab from the outside, but I think there is a vertical interior divider, but not sure.

And if you have a wider peninsula like mayflowers stopping where she did also looks great.

What cabs and countertops did you use? Great color!
They look to be insert cabs? Do you feel like you lost much space going with that style?
Can you please tell me the length of the 2 cabinet walls and peninsula run? Also how wide your peninsula is and how tall your ceilings?
I like the cabinet at the end of your peninsula. Can you please tell me which direction the door opens on the appliance garage?
Yours and May Flowers kitchens are so stylish and look to be very functional. Did you change your layout from your original?

I had my cab maker draw me a lay-out with the end cabinet to the counter but I was afraid it would interfere with my sink, which, as I'm looking at it right now as I'm getting dinner ready and have dishes piled up, it would have. I also thought it would be awkward to get into that appliance garage. I did the open shelf because I'd never have to try to get into it except to pull out a cookbook.

Chinchette, I left 12" past the upper cabs to the counter edge. I wanted all three doors and the open cab to be the same width and be able to reach into the third cab. It didn't make sense to add an inaccessible cab to get me to the end of the peninsula. I had to make them the same width as the ones on the other side of the range. It was quite the balancing act to make all the upper cabinets symmetrical.
