okay... it is late, and I had a glass or two of wine while out at a cooking event earlier tonight (cassoulet with duck confit... ooh lala). anyway, I have never considered wood burning stoves to be beautiful and it is not something I would want to draw attention to. It, and this is just my opinion, is certainly not an object worthy of dismantling your entire plan (ie: the checkerboard floor, industrial theme, etc).

If you decide to go for the bluestar and modernaire in red, that is one issue, but I wouldn't do that to match to a woodburning stove. I would do that because you want a marthavila look, yes, but not for a wood burning stove.

Okay, I have said my peace (and probably too much), but just want you to be clear on your vision and stick to a plan that will allow that vision to come to life.

My initial response is red is great, a punch of color is good, Bordeaux is rich, buit make sure you want to live with the red for a long time -- and then, I would do one but not both.

I adore red, and I adore black & white, but red & black & white will get you to "1950's diner" pretty quickly. Hmm. No chance of loving lush white enamel on that Vermont Castings instead?

I have a bright red Modern Aire hood in my old kitchen. The only thing I regret loosing. :)

If you do both stoves it's going to be too much tension unless they're on the same wall plane and within a few feet from each other. Match the hood to the cookstove, yes, especially if you go for banding and/or potrail, etc., to break up the expanse a little. Or do the woodstove in red. But let each stove be it's own feature instead of trying to get them to match. Do the other one in cream, black, stainless (gray), chocolate, soft green, butterscotch, or even electric blue.

But please don't worry so much about the "theme". Unless you're doing this for a competition or class, the theme is a guideline for you to make choices that work together. So long as things still look good when you deviate from the original design concept, you're fine.

Oh, Mamadadapaige, have you ever seen an enameled Vermont Castings stove? So beautiful. We had one in a creamy color once (the name of the color is escaping me right now)...Should have changed it out and taken it with us when we sold!

Red stove, OK...But I'm with Lascatx that I think red, red, and red (stove, range, and hood) would be too much. And really, really think before you change your vision. I am not against doing that, because I did it. --Lascatx was disappointed, as I remember. ;-) But, the new colors I chose haunted me and grew on me until I really knew that it was the more calming and lighter vision that I wanted. So changing a vision and being so happy you did is possible...

Will you miss the original classic scheme (very elegant) and your checkerboard floor if you change to the red? Or will you always regret not going for the 'gusto' and jumping for the red?

Isn't your checkerboard floor in shades of brown stain? Or was it black and wood? Either way, I don't know why you couldn't have your white, stainless, black, and wood kitchen and have the Bordeaux wood stove at the other end? This would still allow you to have a calmly colored kitchen, or when the mood strikes, to add more color in accents and accessories.

I agree with Rhome, go for the red woodburner, but don't try and match the range.

I agree with rhome and Lascatx, besides being too much red, unless you do a custom color on the Blue Star, it might not match the Vermont Castings stove. Reds are hard to match and clash if not in the same hue. Is this the color of the wood stove? It is beautiful, but then so is a blue star range!

I love the idea of the bordeaux wood burning stove but wouldn't change the color of the range and hood. I also wouldn't try to tie the bordeaux to the backsplash either. I think it will look great on it's own and would do everthing else according to plan.

Wow, thank you all for your responses - and 100% percent against matching the stoves - I think that's unprecedented, lol. circuspeanut, it was your comment re: the 50's diner that snapped me back to reality. I think 50's diner can be cute but it is definitely not what I am going for (nor am I going for fat Parisian chefs balancing trays of food which is also suggested by the black, red, and white.) I guess it just felt like a pity that with all the color options available (190!) I would choose stainless. But the colored range and hood will have to wait for my next kitchen (and lifetime.) pillog, I hear you when you say don't worry too much about the theme and just go for what you like and looks good. The trouble is I am such a neophyte when it comes to this design stuff. I don't think I have such a natural eye for what works as many of you do. So keeping a stated "theme" (or vision) in my head helps because when I go to make a decision I can say "does this enhance or detract from the theme?" and it keeps me from veering widely off track.

IF you want to change your vision, there's nothing wrong with that. Our likes and dislikes change over time, and a plan that is in progress over time will always change in response to more information that the planner gathers. Red in a traditioal/industrial kitchen can definately work with white and other wood tones. It's doable, but maybe not quite with the same other elements you have already picked out. If the red calls to you enough to really lust after that red stove, then maybe start to rethink some of the other elements in your design, like adding an (antique) red island and more pizzazz with red in the backsplash. It CAN work, if you want it to. BUT, it can't work with your current stated vision of all black, wood, and white.
