Those look like fairly simple pieces of furniture to reproduce in a similar fashion. It may be out of his comfort zone or he may lack the confidence, or he may not be sure of what you will really be happy with. He should be able to come up with some pics and/or drawings for you to choose from. It would be a good idea to feel him out. He may go along because of your relationship, but you need to be sure he is completely on board or you may not like the results.
I am a cabinetmaker and I love to make furniture as well. It is a welcome change to making boxes. The customer has told me what they wanted, I gave them my vision of what the end result would be and have never had an unhappy customer. It gives me the chance to be a little more creative. I usually suggest something with character and perhaps a little flair. Inlays are gorgeous and there are many types of moldings one can use.
As far as builtins versus freestanding, builtins would be more work and sometimes more expensive, depending on size, location, painted, or stained, etc. With builtins, you'll mostly just see the front, so some of it can be built with less expensive lumber. With freestanding, you will be able to enjoy the entire piece. Well, except for any part that is against a wall. And you could move it if you choose.
Like I said earlier, though, I'd have a long sitdown with your guy and make sure he's into it. Also, make sure he gives you a final price, if he does do it. No estimates.

Well, there are certainly guys that can pull it off but just as certainly, some should stick with kitchen cabs only.

My top-of-the head response, in your case, would be "No". The reason being your kitchen guy mentioned a furniture maker that he uses. By that reference, he is telling you he's waffling on the project and my bias is generally to go with a specialist, no matter what the subject.

Having said that though, my guy does both but he sticks to certain styles and he has been doing both for 30 years with a huge portfolio of both kitchens and individual pieces. Before I hired him, I saw examples of his work, both cabs and furniture pieces, and went to his shop to see projects in process. I'd have no issues at all with commissioning him to do individual pieces. I started off my work life as a traditional cabinetmaker (read this as we made furniture) in Boston so I feel I have a good background to evaluate quality pieces.

Of all furniture, case pieces, such as you need for your bedroom are the easiest to build (as opposed to chairs for example). So, your kitchen guy has that going for him if you decide to use him.

Just as you did your research when investigating whom to use for your kitchen, you'll want to fully research the same provider concerning furniture. They are completely different animals. How many pieces has he made, what style were they, are you happy with the quality of his furniture, etc. Ask for drawings or renderings; ask about construction methods, joinery, finishes, design, veneering, drawer construction, wood specie choice, timeframes - you know, the whole enchilada. Once again, you will need to educate yourself as to what goes into a quality piece of furniture so you can intelligently evaluate a furniture maker's responses. There's more to it than you might think.

doc: I'm feeling like you - probably best to NOT have my cab maker tackle this. Thanks for the info on the construction - now I have some words to search on and start my research, whether I buy pre-made furniture or custom.

We have had our cabinet guy make us simple furniture and he does a great job. But then, he is a craftsman and has been doing work for us for over 10 years. This is the small crofter table he made to go between our TV watching chairs. We wanted a specific height and size, and he came through for us. But this is simple construction, very much like kitchen cabinetry. He's also made china cupboards for our dining room, and custom offices for DH.

Pudgybaby - Have you ever looked at Room & Board? They have several lines of bedroom furniture -- made to order in the US, and much of it has the clean lines you're looking for. Their prices seemed great for solid wood and fine workmanship, and their customer service/delivery were a great experience for us. They don't have many stores (but maybe you're one of the lucky ones who's near a store!) We bought online a few years ago and have been very pleased.
