Ruthie, some antidepressants are used for pain relief because of their ability to promote a deeper, healing sleep phase. I've been taking one for many years for Fibromyalgia (FMS). FMS sufferers often wake many times a night because of the pain, never reaching the deepest sleep phase which really allows the body to heal and deal with pain better.
