I did it a few times. This is what I did:

Put Brown sugar in the bottom of the crock pot. Place ham cut side down on top of the brown sugar.

Rub more brown sugar all over the ham, pour about 1/4 cup pineapple juice down the sides of crock pot, so you dont rinse the sugar off, then cook on low for about 4 - 5 hrs.

I sure wouldn't put a ham in a slow cooker....I really hate over cooked ham...it gets dry and "baconey".
I would get a pre cooked or honey baked or some ham that you just heat and eat.
Could you possibly figure out how to cook...heat ..it in the slow cooker without keeping it hot for 4 hours?
Do you have a gas grill that you could press into use....for the ham or something else?
I'll bet you could wrap the ham in heavy duty foil and pit it into a disposable aluminum pan and set the gas grill on low and heat that ham in about an hour.
If you like a glaze on it you can mix dry mustard and brown sugar and smear it over the ham before wrapping it up....but just heating the ham will be good.

shaun, that sounds great! Does the pineapple juice keep the ham from drying out? That's my main concern.

Linda, that's a great idea. Unfortunately, dh is a grill "purist"; he will only cook over charcoal, mesquite, or hickory wood, so we don't have a gas grill.

If it were up to me, I'd just buy a Honey Baked ham and be done with it. But dh doesn't like them. (sigh)

Doesn't DH realize TDay is a lot of work? He can have turkey like he was planning and can skip the ham! =)

Mara, I think a ham in the slow cooker will be just fine on low and just enough to warm it, many are already pre-cooked anyway.

Spiral sliced are precooked and would warm well in a slow cooker. I don't see a problem with using a slow cooker at all. Basically you're applying heat to meat to either warm it or cook it if it's not precooked. They'll hold the moisture well so it shouldn't dry out. You could add some water, broth or juice if you feel it's needed. Many are water-added anyway so they'd release some moisture too.

If that's what you have, make do. I'm sure people will be very happy with it. There's the old saying about people will eat sausage as long as they don't know how it's made!

My other thought is that perhaps stuffing/dressing could go in the crockpot to free up some oven space? Or if someone has an electric roaster, all the better but there probably wouldn't be that much difference.

I have a half a picnic ham in the fridge for tomorrow and I plan on using Shaun's recipe. Sounds great! Wed. are crazy around here so I try to use the crock pot as much as I can.

fori, dh does know TDay is a lot of work -- he helps me a lot. Don't know what I'd do without him! I like Honey Baked ham, but I prefer a "regular" ham for ham sandwiches after the big day. I also love to freeze the ham bone and use it later in a big pot of beans, greens, or soup. A Honey Baked ham bone just doesn't give the same flavor.

Annie, thanks for your encouragement. A friend called while ago and told me to use the brown sugar as shaun suggested, then pour a can of Coke over the ham! Has anyone heard of that?

cynic -- fancy meeting you here! LOL I have thought about cooking the stuffing in the crockpot, but the stuffing is really not a problem. I usually cook it in the oven along with the sweet potato souffle' and broccoli casserole, and they are done in less than an hour -- a much shorter time than a ham would require.

Yes the pineapple juice kept it nice and moist. You aren't cooking the ham, you're just heating it up. It's not dry at all. LOW for no more than 4 - 5 hrs, depending on how big the ham is.

Ham in coke-yep, I've made it before. Nigella Lawson boiled ham in coke on one of her shows so of course I had to try it. We really liked it even though I skipped the glazing. Here's a link to her recipe.

Tracey -- I'm almost speechless at the thought of boiling a ham in a 2-Liter bottle of Coke! LOL I can't quite wrap my mind around that; I was already having a hard time envisioning pouring 'only' a can of Coke over the ham.

Also, the recipe calls for onion on the ham. Now, I love to use onion to flavor ribs or fresh pork (as a roast, or for pulled pork BBQ sandwiches) in the slow cooker, but somehow 'cured ham' and 'onion' don't seem to go together in my mind.

My friend's suggestion of brown sugar does sound more appropriate to me than onion.

Nigella Lawson cooks her ham in the oven, which I don't think I'll be able to do.

But one thing is certain: You have really livened up my evening! The day had been rather humdrum 'til I read your post and then read that recipe. :-)

Mara, pre-cooked or not, I still think you're all right with the ham in the slow cooker, I do it that way occasionally and it's always fine. As I said, cook it on low and be sure to not overcook it and it will be fine. I did a 7 pound ham on low in less than 8 hours and it wasn't dried out at all.

I've also heard of the Coke with ham recipe and have one somewhere that takes Root Beer instead!

I have used the coke with ham idea since the late 50's.
It's really very good. It serves the same purpose as pineapple juice would, keeps the meat moist.
Put your ham in a roasting pan, or whatever type of pan you plan to use.
Pour a can on coke over it, sprinkle with some brown sugar, cover tightly & bake as per the instructions that came with the ham. If using a shallow pan, cover with foil.
Uncover the last 30 minutes or so, to brown the ham.
I've never done this in a slow cooker, but common reasoning tells me it would work just fine, as long as you are careful not to over cook.
My reactions to the Nigella Lawson recipe are pretty much the same as yours, mara.
So go for it in your slow cooker, and good luck! Everyone will love it.

Oh my, Annie -- I will never tell what you said to my dd who loves root beer! She would insist that I cook the ham that way, LOL. I think I'll get at least a 7-lb. ham, so your info was helpful.

I feel as if I must be the last person to ever hear of cooking a ham with Coke! Especially since you said you've used it since the late '50s. Don't know how I've missed hearing about it all these years. :-)

That's just it, Rusty -- I am plenty old enough to have heard of it! My dh and I have been married more than 30 years. He's a couple years older than I and remembers the Cold War/bomb shelter days, whereas I don't. But I [barely] remember when Elvis went in the Army, the mania which accompanied the British Invasion, the advent of James Bond, etc.

We both vividly remember JFK's, MLK's, RFK's assassinations, the Vietnam War (during which dh was drafted), LBJ, Watergate, the oil embargo of the '70s, the Reagan years, etc, etc, etc.

In our case, "Oldtimers" disease means those memories are often more vivid than what we did last week. Believe me, we hear about that all the time from our kiddos. (But they do admit the music of the '60s was better than today's, LOL.)

So you see, I really should have heard of ham cooked with Coke poured over it! I don't doubt I'll be hearing about that for some time to come from my friend who informed me of it today.

mara, we must be about the same age because we have the same memories. Some good, some bad, I aspired to be a hippie in the 70s.

And for the record, my girls "steal" my music all the time, they also agree that it's better than today's music. Remakes of "Killing Me Softly with His Song" and "Total Eclipse of the Heart" made me run for my original artists. Bad idea, those CDs were immediately "appropriated" by the kids, in total agreement that the originals were better.

My youngest once asked how we could have lived without VCRs, DVD players, computers, ipods or X-Boxes. I told her we kept ourselves busy, inventing things so her generation could play with them, LOL.

I'll be interested to see how you do that ham and how it comes out, be sure to let us know. I won't tell your daughter about the root beer, and I won't mention that I helped my great-nephew Dylan make Root Beer Jelly for the County Fair a couple of years ago. He won a blue ribbon for that. (grin)
