bb- soft foods or thick liquids?
Your description sounds more liquid.
Is his jaw wired closed?

Tomato!

You can also put a more complex soup, like tomato basil, in the blender. It'll still taste good without the texture.

How about a terrine? There are all kinds of good recipes out there for both meat and vegetable terrines, and they're much more appealing, and tastier, than ordinary mush.

Re pudding, I'd go with something more intensely flavored, like a double chocolate mousse. He can buy Jell-o pudding cups for ordinary milk pudding.

Can he chew at all? Is his jaw wired? Or is it just that what gets chewed has to be soft? I'm thinking milk rice would be a great thing.

Cook the rice to al dente then drain and finish cooking to soft with milk or coconut milk, and spices. Add bits of mango or other soft fruit. Since he probably can't chew nuts and seeds, maybe a bit of nut or seed butter instead?

Can he chew enough to eat ravioli?

His jaw is not wired shut - yet. It probably will be eventually. But he is still looking for a good oral surgeon. Until all of that is settled, he is limited to no chewing.

I pour frozen strawberries in a blender, then cover with applejuice and blend. I've been thinking this would be good to freeze in single serve portions. It's a nice little snack.

You could try baking small cups of pumpkin pie filling. Mash up potatoes or squash. The easiest soft protein is eggs, if he could cook one or two to go with the vegetables.

Thanks, liz. Good ideas. I made Creamy Tomato soup from Bon Appetit, Pioneer Woman's Perfect Potato Soup, and Butternut Squash and Bourbon Bisque from The Food Network. For dessert, I made bread pudding from some leftover pumpkin muffins.

My buddy sees the oral surgeon on Monday. After that I'll know if I need to make him more soup.

Cream of broccoli soup and cream of asparagus soup. You can jazz it up with anything he might enjoy eating. Just put it all in a blender. Tapioca pudding has the recipe right on the label. We have a Vita mixer. My husband makes smoothies using kale, plain yogurt, bananas and apples. You can make blended hot soups in one also. It only takes a few minutes. It heats up by itself. It costs alot more than a regular blender, but it's easy to use and clean. Saves $$ not having to use the stove.

Pea soup. Ina garten has a really good recipe for fresh pea not split pea soup. It is very simple and you blend it until its really smooth. I made this for myself when I had my wisdom teeth cut out.

Amylou, I went to Ina garten out of curiousity. The first page was all split pea soups. It had 19 other pages to scroll down. I'd like to see the recipe. I love anything with peas in it. Can you provide a link for us?

Here is the recipe I was talking about. I leave the mint out because I hate mint.

Here is a link that might be useful: pea soup

Thanks, amylou. That's sounds awesome.

Gazpacho is nourishing as is bean and bacon soup from the blender. Mashed potatoes are easy and better if you make them thin best if you use some beef stock or chicken boullion. Cream of wheat and cream of rice are easy to eat but better if you put in some ground up fruit or even ground ham/beef/chicken.
Tell him that he has to roll the food around with his tongue for a bit if he can't chew. The enzymes in the mouth are very important for digestion and if he just swallows not all of the nutrients are absorbed and the stomach has to work harder. With what is going on with him he doesn't need to have indigestion too.

Lots of soups. Mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, ect. Hot cereals like cream of wheat, oatmeal, malt o meal. Yogurt, cottage cheese.

And of course baby food. Baby food comes in a ton of different flavors and is made for people that can't chew because they lack the teeth :)

Pretty much anything can be put into a blender and made into a no-chew form. My mom used to put whatever was for dinner in the blender and feed it to us kids when we were babies.

For variety, you can try taking some noodle soup like ramen or even tortellini in broth and blending it; as BeesNeeds points out, the blender is your friend. That may be the best choice--- buying a quality blender like a Vitamix -- we like our NInja.

Thanks all for the excellent suggestions. When my friend returns after seeing the oral surgeon, I may make him some more soup or even asparagus mousse. If he wants to run his burger through the blender, that's up to him. (That's hyperbole, folks!)
