Need Soft Brown Living Room Ideas.....

My current LR color is BM Dried Basil, but I'm planning to change it to a soft brown...possible BM Lenox Tan. My carpet is a light cream berber with cherry furniture. I'm also planning on a new sofa/ls or sectional in a terra Cotta/reddish tone.

I'm going to purchase a Royal Palace QVC Rug with the garnet/beige accents. Room is open and lighting is good too..southern exposure. I know browns/creams/reds can be beautiful together and would really appreciate advice on a BM warm brown....Thanks All!!

You know I would like to see you use something like wheat with some yellow brown tones rather than a color with really brown gray or brown pink undertones so that your cherry furniture will be given its due. The terra cotta is going to be beautiful and I have had that before with my cherry tables. I think a color like Behr's Toasted Wheat, BMs Whole Wheat or Ralph Lauren's Parchment will really make your room zing. I think what you are doing sounds gorgeous. Remember to get pictures for the GWebbers to see.

Our furniture is cherry and mahogany; the carpeting is beige. We selected a trio from the same card and used them through much of the public space.

The accent color we used in the adjacent Entry and into the LR is SW Latte and the Living and Dining rooms are SW Kilim Beige. SW Divine White was selected for the second floor hallway so that we have some continuity but as there are no windows a lighter tone was necessary.

I trend toward soft colors because everything goes nicely and our rooms are well illuminated too. Good luck with your selections.

I love the colors and the uncluttered look - it's clean and relaxing and warm. But - the couch and chairs look too far apart for comfortable conversation. Maybe you can pull them closer? Really play with the furniture arrangement - maybe the couch in front of the window, the chairs facing it. Is the room big enough to have two separate areas? Is the window a patio door? A couple of lighter Scandinavian-style chairs, with frame exposed, dark wood or even metal, fabric or leather in red or cream or beige would look fantastic in your room - lighter chairs are easier to move about for conversation. Shelves, or shorter shelves with art above them, on one of the walls, if you pull the chairs and couch closer? You'll probably need more than the one painting. A coffee table? Large ottoman? Not every room needs one but I think it would make your room cozier esp. if you don't get any more chairs. A larger rug - maybe an Oriental in beige and red. I like the curtains but I think they will have more rhythm when you get other vertical elements in the room and art on the walls.

Hi Ozlem, Definitely remove that floral sofa, there is too much going on in the space. I don't think personally that the colours on the walls match the colours of the sofa. I think the walls are a shade or two darker than it should be. The rug is also too small for the space, I would opt for a larger rug with maybe a pattern picking up other colours in the room. Also have you thought about changing the layout a little bit? I would move the TV to the wall where the floral couch is currently at and put a floor standing lamp next to it in the corner by the couch. I think it would make more sense there and also you could have the option of watching TV whilst at the dining table. I would then leave the wall the TV is at now with no furniture on it so that there is a clear pathway to the dining room and just put some simple art work on it. A lovely home you got!

I guess I should have mentioned there's a fireplace on the all brick wall of the living room on the far side of the living room, and the current entrance has a partial (3/4 height) wall/bookcase to separate it from the family room.

Lovely space and a lot of great choices already. If you’re willing to switch out the dark brown dresser, would you consider painting it? Maybe a pale blue chalk paint if you’re bring in a few blue/teal/green accents? On the other hand, if you lighten up some of the pieces in your vignette, keeping it the way it is could still work. Find a selection of clear green and turquoise bottles to replace the black ones in your vignette. The lamp is a little too far to the right, the tray with bottles needs to move a smidge to the left. Try covering the books in white to repeat the white from other pieces in the room. I’m an allergy sufferer myself, so I completely get the no rug thing. And all throws and pillow covers must be washable, etc. Regarding plants and dust... very easy solution for that is to give your plants a shower every so often. This works incredibly well to keep them watered, dust and insect free, and is really easy to do. I use cool water (not completely cold) and don‘t turn the water on full blast so that it’s fairly gentle on the plants. Leave it in there for a bit to drain, and then they can go back to their normal spot.

My living room is BM putnam ivory with a darker accent wall of BM Plymouth brown. We have dark walnut and cherry furniture. Plymouth brown is a deep chocolate so you may want to avoid it if you don't have adequate light. Putnam ivory is a great warm neutral on it's own too.
