I now have McAfee but it's time to renew. Which is the best in your opinion?

I use Panda Cloud Antivirus. It's free.
There many free antivirus programs that work just fine.
No need to pay for one.

who the heck are all these new people and some of the things suggested here are not the ones you want please be careful we have had some trolls here lately trying to sell their junk. You can not run 2 antivirus programs at the same time if they are both running full time it will cause a conflict that is very well known and documented and will be told to you at any of the support forums you go to so you need to fully remove Norton since you now have AVG. go here and use app remove and the norton removal tool from the security garden link Antivirus Product Removal Tools Using AppRemover it is free spybot search and destroy was at one time very good but today there are some that are much preferred so I suggest replacing spybot and adaware with these free products, update them each time you use them and scan weekly with full scan. Yacheryl, I was having a hard time also to find virus protection for a couple of my older computers. I now have "Avast" on my ME laptop (128 ram) and it works great. I put "Avira AntiVir" on the 98 computer and it works fine.

Dennis, thanks for a well laid out list of problems. It does help those who feel they can see some or all of your problems. AVG is by far the most popular free anti virus and I doubt that is your issue. I would not remove that one. Spyware Doctor I know nothing about. If you have the original CD or the download stored on your computer you could remove it entirely using the Add/Remove and see if that helps at all. Superantispyware and or Malwarebytes could be alternatives to trying Spybot Search & Destroy. If you use Spybot S&D be sure it is in fact that program and not a sound alike rogue program. Have you ran any cleaners at all? Not registry cleaners but the Disk cleanup in the Accessories/System Tools folder of XP. Try that and a defrag, it will help modestly. Do you have Google or Yahoo toolbars and are they allowed to run in the background? The Google Toolbar has either 3 or 4 entries in your Startup and using your resources. Click Start click Run type msconfig click OK click the Startup tab Now check each of these items and decide if they do in fact need to run. Google each entry before deciding to stop one because if you stop the wrong ones the computer may not start again. If you stop any you need to reboot. During the reboot you will get a dire warning, do not be alarmed, place a check mark not to see it again and continue the booting.

Mothers are often bound to their son's advice, but I think there are many better choices than Microsoft Security Essentials. It's not highly regarded. A good program works in real time to monitor activity and intercepts undesired traffic, dangerous downloads, etc., in addition to simply scanning drives for known problems If you want to restrict your choices to free ones, any of the "A's" - Avast, AVG, Avira - should all work fine for you. Here's an independent review from a respected source Free Security programs Others are very capable and offer wider services. Most can be obtained for less money than shown, and many ISPs provide a quality product for free. I get Norton free from Comcast Not free security programs

I had the free version of AVAST, but now have the paid. Very reasonable for 2 years. Have had this about 5 years.

I use Microsoft Security Essentials. My step-son and grandson are both computer geeks, and they both recommended it. Their philosophy is that Microsoft created Windows, so who would know better about how to protect it? It's free, which is my favorite price!

I recommend MSE by microsoft very easy to use and install or AVAST free.
However you will need to fully remove McAfee prior to installing any other antivirus program on your pc this is essential. And it will require the use of either the McAfee removal tool or this free program.

I use the Comodo Free Version. Have used this for a long time. It unobtrusive,uses low resources and always is highly rated by the independent testing where the others usually have issues. And it's been effective. Standard inclusion when I set up a machine. I still use AVG on the XP unit. Never got around to changing it over to Comodo.

Never liked Avast or MS.

I started using Norton 4 years ago when McAfee began misbehaving in my computers. I'm very happy with Norton.

I use the free version of AVG and am very happy with it. I hated both Norton and McAfee. Norton is sneaky.....they hide files in your computer that you can't find if you want to delete it from your computer. It takes a trained tech to get rid of them all.
