How to remove fake virus alert jamming my computer?

I'm pretty sure we recently had a message thread about the phony "Microsoft" alert that stops your Internet browsing and tells you to call a certain number to have a Microsoft technician walk you through the steps to get it off your computer.

Obviously, I'm not calling the number. But I thought someone (Raven, perhaps?) had posted instructions on removing the problem, or a link to the instructions. I've been searching, but I don't see it. My computer got hit last night. It is presently shut down, but I worry about any damage that might be done.

I Googled the problem. Lots of websites offer instructions (usually involving acquiring 4 or 5 anti-malware programs), but I can't tell which sites are legit.

Any idea how these slimebuckets get into our computers? I use the Internet a lot, but don't usually go beyond my "old reliable" websites.
