The last location the deer kept nibbling them so I can't fault the location. They now are directly in front of Gloire de Dijon (climbing on the low fence) in a very sunny location. Do yours crumple in the afternoon sun? Interesting your experience with Old Port one of the posters (hopefully they will post again) raved about it. That is why I love this forum! In regards to Cottage Rose. Cottage Rose has been very healthy and disease resistant (although very thorny). It is the only pink I have left in the back. I am removing it because I am not partial to pink and my house has been color coated (a different color). I also planted it many years ago (one of my first Austin's). I purchased it pre-Clair Martins book (before we knew what monsters some of them could become). I think it would be lovely in a larger area!

Patty, Julia has been a workhorse here, even in the not best conditions, some morning shade and mid-day sun, then shade then late afternoon sun, 4 1/2 of sun hours tops but she still keeps blooming. Thanks for the heads-up on disease the first couple of years new Austins have been disease disasters this year. Maybe year three (next year) will be the year I'll see an improvement? One can hope. I'll be ordering her roses and suggesting the best for her to pick from. Luckily she doesn't mind if they lack scent. This gives her a lot more choices. They'll definitely be own root. winter hardiness is definitely a concern. I have Peter Kulkielski's book 'Chemical Free Roses' for reference plus the wealth of information and knowledge from the rose forum community so I'm sure we'll find something that will provide lots of beauty without a lot of stress.

Every color including colors of white belongs to a hue family. Hue family is determined objectively based on the color's DNA. Undertone is the wrong way to think about color, especially choosing paint colors, because undertones are just someone's subjective opinion made in some random context under some random light source - and their perception of a color has nothing to do with the reality of context and light you have to work with. When it comes to white paint colors, this is important to understand for a couple reasons. #1 an objective categorization of whites by hue family makes it a whole lot easier to understand the core characteristics of white paint colors. #2 you can just use a color notation to find out what hue family a color belongs to, there is no visual gymnastics or shuffling of paint chips involved. but the floors are the same Use the floors and the stone in the fireplace to help you zero in on the right white. If you make sure the white looks pretty with the FP and the floors, you'll essentially create an "envelope" of color; a color coordinated shell for the essential contents like furniture, rug, art. Gather the paint chips for the colors on this infographic. It's a collection of whites from different hue families and evaluating this range of whites from different hue families will help you figure out what hue family neighborhood harmonizes best with the FP, floor and the light you have to work with so you can get the look you want.
