Moon Holding Water

The moon is 'holding' water...which is supposed to mean rain within the next few days.

If the moon were 'pouring' water, that means it will rain very soon.

Venus is also in the photo.

Nice picture! I never heard that expression before...Moon holding water. It must really be true because we got about an inch and half of rain yesterday and more to come today.

You did it again. I was hoping when I saw this that you would get a picture of it. You did an excellent shot this time. We had a thunderstorm this morning.

Thanks all. No, it's not holding water at the present time, and no rain is in the forecast, so I guess it is holding true once again. I guess I'm going to have to get on the ball and get some stars in the photo next time:) A planet(Venus or Mercury) will be easier than a star though. But then what next, a comet? Where will it end? I guess I'm not the only one who's never satisfied... Kt

Thanks KT! Pusswillows are more of a cooler climate shrub or tree. For good details on moon I used my birding lens, a 70 - 200 mm IS and a 2X converter, which brings it up to 400 mm, of coarse a larger zoom, like 600 or 800 mm would be better but these lenses are about 3 X more money. Konrad

Hot water heater doesn't seem to hold a lot of hot water

"When you think about it 40 gallons isn't a lot of water." I disagree. That is a lot of HOT water at 140Â°. If you were to draw it all down at 2.5 GPM, it would take 8 minutes. ThatÂs theoretical, because the way you draw it is to push it with COLD water. But thatÂs OK, because you arenÂt going to take too many showers at 140Â° Â one, maybe. So to make it comfortable, you mix in 40 gallons of water at say, room temperature, and now you have 16 minutes at 102Â°. All the time, the fire is burning in the heater. If you have not been drawing a quart of water from the bottom of your heater once a month (And I know you havenÂt.) then you may have a scale at the bottom. This fools the thermostat into thinking you have many gallons of hot water, when all you have is a thin scale of hot deposits. Pinoke

@westes Zone 9b California SF Bay Turface holds a surprising amount of water, more than anything else I've tested. I believe the Turface MVP I tested 3 years ago was straight out of the bag. I have no plans to open a new 25kg bag to repeat the test. Keep in mind, the coarse and smooth 'sands' were roughly similar but more uniform size than the Turface. Those sands are much bigger than fine horticultural sand, which I also use but do not have enough to test. Since I had most of my things out from a couple days ago, I took measurements for sifted Turface that was sitting in my garage for a few years and added them to the chart. My sieve has 1.3x1.3mm holes. Here is what a typical piece looks like and was measured to be: The table is updated as follows:

Well, we did have rain yesterday...Now I'll think of that when I see the moon as thus...I second Joan's remark...Love that windmill with moon...

In this photo also, the moon is 'following' the sun setting.

REMEMBER: The rounded part of the moon is always the side where the sun is shining on it. If the rounded side is to one side as it sets, that is the direction where the sun is at.

Thats the one. The first moon I saw was half full at the bottom. Two nights later it was half full at the top. After that it was full.

You must have seen it at different times of the day for it to do that, such as just after dark, then just before dawn.

The moon increases from 'no'(new) moon to full moon in two weeks, then it goes back to 'no' moon in two weeks. So, each night starting at new moon, the moon gets increasingly larger until it's full moon in two weeks, then it gets decreasingly smaller each night for two weeks when it disappears or becomes a 'new' moon.
