Can take the chopped onions and pecans but NOT the pickles

Craving tuna salad and crackers, so off I went to one of my favorite deli's.

Never had their tuna before, everything there is excellent,

BUT won't get the tuna salad again.

I just don't like sweet pickles, period, in anything, and particularly my tuna salad.

How do you like your tuna salad?

Same here. I like dill pickles in mine and dill pickles in my potato salad.

With chopped onion, celery, and lots of sweet pickles (and pickle juice)...and just a little mayo. I wouldn't want pecans in it.

You have to use distilled 5% white or cider to be safe. Many of the other vinegars aren't acidic enough. And keep in mind that since they are very low-acid veggies a safe ratio of vinegar is required - best would be straight vinegar but I sure would go below 75% vinegar. Add some sugar to off-set the vinegar taste if it doesn't appeal. I'd trim them as you suggested and then use one of the pickled vegetables recipes linked below. There isn't a ratio to worry about since it is pure vinegar. It is however much of each you want. We like mostly onions but want just a few sweet peppers for flavoring and color so I mentioned the 1-2 cups of peppers. If you want some hot peppers too no problem. Just make sure it is 5% vinegar and don't dilute the vinegar with any other liquids. You can pickle just about anything in straight vinegar. Sweet peppers, hot peppers, onions, garlic, etc. So it can be all peppers or all onions 1/2 and 1/2 peppers and onions or what ever mix of them you wish. If this were a water diluted vinegar recipe like many other pickling recipes it would be a different matter all together and you wouldn't be able to trade either peppers or onions for cukes. But since it isn't diluted the ratio of peppers to onions isn't a safety issue. OK? Dave

I wear the gas permeable contact lenses and I don't find that they make any difference, except that I can see when I cut onions, LOL. Maybe the soft contact lenses cover more of the eye? Or maybe not, beats me, but my contact lenses do not help at all. I've used a wet knife, refrigerated the onion, never cut through the root. I peel under running water and I still cry, although the cold onion and a sharp knife reduces the tears the most. Woodie got me a pair of those red onion goggles and they work pretty well, which is why Ashley has confiscated them, but even with those I cry a little bit. I still use mostly fresh onions. I froze onions and even double bagged they made my whole freezer smell like onions. Now I dehydrate them, which works relatively well except that I still have to chop them all to dehydrate them! I am doing all my prep work tomorrow...did all the shopping today. Turkey-chop all the vegies,cube the bread and crumble the cornbread, make the compound butter and shove it under the skin, boil up the turkey wings I bought for stock (I like lots and lots of gravy, so I want extra stock to add to the drippings). Rolls-make dough, and refrigerate after first rise. Vegetables-clean & chop the kale (and make the bacon), chunk the parsnips, carrots, beets & turnips to be ready for roasting (and decide at last whether I will add the yams to this mix or roast them in their jackets), mince a load of garlic and herbs(for many things)and boil and mash the potatoes, ready to reheat Thursday. Soup....I've got to make the soup. And I haven't decided what kind of soup to make yet. I'm leaning towards French onion because I've never met anyone who doesn't like it, and though time consuming, it's easy. That or my broth based tomato soup with quinoa and veggies...it's light, easy to make, and a bit spicy to egg on the appetite. Pies-make the pie crusts, chop the pecans, measure out ingredients so they'll be ready to throw together and into the oven. I'm making a Kahlua pecan pie with chocolate chips and a pumpkin. I think I'll bake them Thanksgiving morning, before I put the turkey in...the smell will make me feel festive and drive my husband crazy. :D As for appetizers, I think I'm going to keep it pretty simple. Some cream cheese and olive stuffed celery because I've had it every Thanksgiving of my life, and so has my husband. Gouda & Cheddar with crackers. Spiced nuts and olives. I have some yogurt cheese balls marinated in olive oil and fresh herbs, garlic & red pepper flakes that I will serve with some crostini. I have prepped like this for many years, and it makes Thanksgiving day a much more fun, relaxed celebration rather than a hot, hectic, stress fest. My husband's mother and brother will be a couple to three hours late as usual, but I told them I was serving at 1:00, when I'll actually be serving at around 4:30. Hey, you gotta handle these things...better to be crafty than waste time being annoyed. We have fun, making bets as to when they'll actually show up as we have our sippies and gradually begin not to care when they show up, or if. :D

I don't like onions in my tuna salad! I don't like raw onions at all, except for sweet Maui onions.

The only thing I don't like in my tuna salad is too much mayo. If I order a tuna sandwich, I always say mustard, no mayo on the roll.

I like tuna and just onions with mayo sometimes.

Mostly though I use mayo, onions, boiled eggs and pickle juice. Don't like the pickles.

I wish I could buy pickle juice without the pickles.

I never make it, but I think I'd like it with pecans (toasted) and a little celery and a lot of mayo. I like those things in my chicken salad, so why not?

Marygail, that's one of my favorite sandwiches--right up there with bologna, potato chips and mayo! LOL!!

I make "clean out the fridge" tuna salad.

I put any and all leftover fresh veggies in it.
shredded carrot, minced radish, diced cucumber...
shredded cheese is good too.

Tuna with mayo, celery, onions and black pepper. Hard Boiled egg is good if I have it. My friend uses cut up grapes too. Sounded gross to me, but actually was quite good.

I like dill pickles ONLY, but I've never tried in tuna before. I used to drink the pickle juice as a kid!

I don't think I'd like the texture of pecans-too crunchy!

Love sweet pickle relish in mine! Tuna, sweet pickle relish, boiled eggs and mayo! Yum... I may have to make some..

ew, I hate sweet pickles, but cannot have tuna fish without dill pickles. hmmmm, now I really want that for dinner. :)

I don't do tuna anything. But chicken salad, I love. I like it with mayo, onion, pecans, bread and butter pickles, grapes...you name it...I'll take it. Except boiled eggs.

The only pickle I do like is sweet, but the pickle business would go bust if they relied on folks like me to buy any.

And I can live without pickles in anything..even tuna salad.
