Where to put trash/recycling pullout?
Comments (5)If that is the primary trash in the area you will end up with people in your way, any chance you would consider two and put the smaller one around that area or in the island in that end and the main recycler maybe near the dishwasher. I'm thinking about when we clear dishes from a big party and there are non-disposer items that need to be tossed like bones or napkins your current location is a travel....See MoreWhere do you put your mail?
Comments (19)At the end of my refrig/pantry run I have a small section of countertop above a bank of drawers (about 21X24) where all the mail and other c**p get piled. Two of the drawers hold mailing and school supplies. The other two drawers are supposed to be for DH and me to store mail and other stuff that needs to be saved short term. Unfortunately DH's drawer remains empty while his pile on top grows ever larger. Heaven forbid he should have to open a drawer to get to something when he wants it. I have a three tier letter holder where bills, bank statements and that sort of thing are put until they get paid or whatever. From there they go directly to the file box that I keep in one of my kitchen cabinets. I wanted a filing cabinet in the kitchen, but it was one of the things that had to be scrapped due to lack of space. I wish DH could be a little neater/more organized, but as long as all the clutter stays on the one counter I guess I have to consider it a victory. In our previous kitchen there was so little counter space and his piles were so large, I had a space about 15"X24" to do prep work in. Totally Confused...See MoreWhere do you put the food as you take out it of the fridge?
Comments (21)I also have never seen refrigerators that did not have reversible doors, and they are quite easy to change, although it does require two people and possibly a special type of Allen wrench - like the star-shaped ones. My fridge has French doors on top, a central drawer (which I love) for meats and cheese, and then a bottom drawer for the freezer, which I don't especially like, but it does have two small upper drawers for things that are used often, and that's what I use the most. I have a small counter between the fridge and the stove, but most often I put foo on the peninsula, which is close enough to the fridge, but not so close to the stove/oven that I cannot use a large pizza peel with the oven....See MoreWith 2 sinks, where do you put the trash?
Comments (20)I'm definitely in the minority, but we placed ours by our cleanup sink.....actually by our DW. It's a pullout with trash and recyclable bins. I didn't want the trash near our prep area because that is our island and you'd have to enter the kitchen to throw anything away. And we generate more trash during cleanup and non-cooking items (recyclable containers, graded schoolwork/projects, school forms, used craft supplies, after meal leftovers, etc) than prep trash. We also entertain quite a bit and during get together's I don't like people constantly in and out of my kitchen just to throw something away. Yes, it's a few extra steps to get to when working in the kitchen, but it's a few less steps when you're outside of the kitchen and need to throw something away and you don't get in anyone's way. But I really think this is one of those choices that is completely dependent on your family and how you operate....See Moremomfromthenorth
