Where to put trash/recycling pullout?

I somewhat like this location (to the left of the prep sink), since it is in the prep area. The biggest downside is that I was originally going to put a large bank of drawers to the right of the range to put pots and pans (the left side will have plates, bowls, etc). With this plan, I would probably end up putting a small trash bin underneath the main sink to handle waste in the clean-up area.

The other ideas I have are to the left of the dishwasher, or on the island. I want the biggest trash pull-out possible, so maybe the island is the best option?

Note: the island shows just drawers, and we are actually putting the microwave in there so that will be modified

With no water source on the island, it's unlikely to be used as the primary prep space. I'd do a small trash under the prep sink, as the corner will be the prime prep spot, ad another one under the cleanup sink. If you want the island to be the prime prep location, then the sink needs to be moved there.

Mt micro drawer solved my layout issues, so I would never give that up. I have a trash pullout on my island and love it, but my main trash and recycling are under my cleanup sink turned sideways so that I have dish soap and DW detergent between them for everyday access and other cleaning supplies and extra trash bags behind them. Disposal and instant hot tank fit in there too, so I could live without the trash pullout. I have also seen sink cabinets modified to have one or both door pullout. We thought about doing that but the depth of our sink would have meant a short trash container and we went for taller.

I have to say that when I had a group of young (that is, younger than me) friends over and they saw our freestanding trash compactor, they laughed and said they hadn't seen one since they were kids. Thanks! In any case, we replaced it with trash cans under the sink when we did the reno. Our small kitchen didn't have space for a pullout or we might have gone that way. How many people live in your house? When all 3 kids were growing up, the trash compactor was marvelous. When it got to be just the 2 of us, it could take 3 weeks to fill. We made separate trash runs for smelly things like meat trays. If you have a houseful of people, I say replace it until you do your reno and then reevaluate. You're unlikely to be sorry you have it, and it's so much easier not trying to blend a new element into a cabinet run that you're going to replace anyway.

I have a double trash pullout, the front is used for garbage and the rear is used for recyclables (glass, cans, bottles). Looking at my sink, the trash cabinet is to the left. The dishwasher is to the right. A couple times a week DH dumps the recyclables into a bin in the garage, which he either leaves at the curb on pick-up day (we pay for trash pick up) or he takes it to the transfer station. We are not required to separate the recyclables when we put them at the curb, so we don't need 3+ bins. I love Linda's setup, though.

I love both of my servo drive (Ikea utrusta) trashcans, one beside the prep sink and the other under the clean-up sink. It was a lot of work and adjustment getting them in, and they aren't as sensitive as they probably could be - but perhaps that is for the best, as they don't open unless we want them to. My contractor didn't really think through the design logistics carefully, it was his first experience with these, and the cabinet guys had a steep learning curve. The cans are smaller than I would've preferred, but I think that is poor design/planning and not a shortcoming of the servo unit which is strong enough to push open the drawer with one recycling and one trash can.

If that is the primary trash in the area you will end up with people in your way, any chance you would consider two and put the smaller one around that area or in the island in that end and the main recycler maybe near the dishwasher. I'm thinking about when we clear dishes from a big party and there are non-disposer items that need to be tossed like bones or napkins your current location is a travel.

I have a trash/recycle pull out next to the main sink, and a trash pull out next to the prep sink. They are the same width, though, because the trash/recycle is front to back, not side to side.

Thank you all!

I definitely think that I need to be able to deal with trash near both sinks. I am trying to decide if I should dedicate two cabinets as trash/recycling pull-outs, or if I should make one trash/recycle pull-out and one receptacle under the opposite sink.
