Serving Dish Question

I seem to run into this problem a lot. I have tons of serving dishes, platers, etc... but I often have problems serving a layered dip (like the size of a pie plate) with crackers and veggies. It just takes up so much room.

I am brining this dip/chips and veggies to a friend's house soon..(everyone is supposed to bring something so I can really take up her entire dining room table with tons of platters/bowls for my one dip).

What would be the best way to serve this taking up the least amount of space? I can probably shrink the dip down a bit but it has layers so can't just small bowl it like a typical onion dip or something. I don't need tons of space just enough for a few chips/crackers and a veggie. Any great ideas? Thanks in advance.

I usually put the dip vehicle (chips or whatever) in a bowl on the side and just serve them next to each other. Would that work for you?

think vertically! My friend and I do a massive cookie exchange each year and we struggle to have all the cookies on the table. We solve the problem by going up, instead of out. We use upside down flowerpots, serving bowls, etc. You could put the dip vehicles (great term, Alexa) on one of those tiered dessert serving dishes and place it next to the dip.

They work fine...in fact I don't see shy you would need something like that....you can keep them on the cook top on very low.... Or were you wanting to put the pot directly on your dining room table?

Wish I'd seen this earlier! I make my gelatin-set mousse cheesecakes upside down! Grease and paper-line the springform tin, bottom and sides. Make the filling and pour it into the tin. Let it set. Make the crumb crust, sprinkle over the "top" of the mousse and gently but firmly press it together with the back of a spoon. Refrigerate. To serve, loosen the sides and remove, then place the serving plate over the crumb crust and flip. Peel off the paper and voila! Garnish. It travels well this way too, as you can leave it in the pan until you arrive at your destination.

This is a great potato recipe to go with lamb, I found it on epicurious and we loved it. Robin Roasted Potatoes With Garlic, Lemon, And Oregano Other : 2000 PATATES RIGANATES Editor's note: This recipe is excerpted from Aglaia Kremezi's book The Foods of the Greek Islands. Few people can resist these potatoes, which are capable of stealing the show from any food they accompany Â so make sure you have plenty for seconds. Although it is served all over Greece, this dish is particularly good on islands like Naxos, where the local potatoes have an exceptional taste. On the special days when a leg of lamb or a chicken is roasted, the potatoes are cooked in its juices. If you want to cook this dish using small potatoes, there is no need to peel them, but I suggest that you halve them, because they taste best when they can absorb more sauce. Makes 4 to 6 servings. by Aglaia Kremezi Houghton Mifflin Company 3 pounds baking potatoes, peeled and cut into 1 1/2-inch cubes 1/2 cup olive oil 4 garlic cloves, minced 1 1/2 teaspoons dried oregano, crumbled 1 teaspoon salt Freshly ground black pepper 1/2 cup beef stock or chicken stock 1/3 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice 2-3 tablespoons chopped fresh oregano Preheat oven to 400Â°F. Place the potatoes in a single layer in a 13-x-9-inch baking dish and pour the oil over them. Add the garlic, dried oregano, salt and pepper to taste and toss well to coat with the oil. Bake the potatoes for 15 minutes. Add the stock, toss and bake for 10 minutes more. Add the lemon juice, toss and bake for 10 to 15 minutes more, or until the potatoes are cooked through. Question about serving food at a party

Thanks everyone! Joyful, my daughter will have a Bachelors in Recreation Management.. she had her internship at the zoo in Omaha and already has been offered (and accepted) a job there. The party will be on a Sunday and our family has always had a large meal around 2:00 on Sunday parties. I may rethink the time to serve the main meal though.. maybe change it to 4:00 or 4:30. We are not having a open house, but I know we'll have the usual late stragglers. I hadn't planned on having appetizers, but may add some now. It'll have to be ready made stuff cause I will be out of town the day before the party for DD's graduation. Trying to make this easy on myself. :) I do plan on hiring someone to tend to the kitchen while I socialize with the guests. There will be plenty of food. Probably 4 different pasta selections and 3 or 4 different salads plus breadsticks.. olives, pickles.. that sort of thing. Once the food is set up we will continue to replenish it.. it's not that I thought we would run out of food, I just know hot pasta and bread tastes better when it is first brought out. Beer. Yes! I'll also have plenty of coffee, bottled water, tea and sodas. Desserts will include a large cake and hot from the oven cookies. Any more suggestions are welcome.

I have several tiered servers- one with room for three plates, put the dip on one shelf and everything else on two.

If you don't have a server like this, this is a good time to get one!
I like the kind that let you use regular plates, that way you can use seasonal plates.

That's the trouble with things like a layred dip like that thing some call mexican Sombrero...with and layers of beans, sour cream onions etc...when you first bring out this lovely round dish or stuff it's beautiful...but when people have been diggine into it and it's half gone it doesn't look so pretty...and the big platter is still on the table because you can't move it to something smaller without messing up the layers!
However Is erve something like that on Christmas, and I never get to taste it.. it's probably good because by the time I get the rest of the food on the table it's gone.
How about putting the layered stuff on a footed cake plate on another plate with chips on?

Thanks guys. Good ideas. I'll keep them in mind especially if I ever do the Mexican layered dip thing or have a cookie exchange.

I ended up having to make the dip early and didn't get to read all the suggestions before hand so I just went ahead and made the dip in an individual size salad bowl/plate and then placed that low bowl on a big platter of the same design with the crackers and veggies around it on the platter. It was a kind of strong pesto dip so I didn't really need to make a lot of it... Seemed to work out.

I'm definitely going to keep in mind thinking vertically. Thanks again.

Do you have room for another very small table ???

I usually use a small sturdy card table with a Cloth thrown over it.
Use it like Buffet style. Leave the Main courses on the larger table ?
