favorites eating joints in Seattle?

I will be in Seattle for a couple days, wondering if anybody has some insider tips on great places to eat...fish or seafood of course.

My favorite fancy seafood places are Anthonys (there are multiple locations), Ray's Boathouse in the Ballard neighborhood, Ivars, Ettas just a block or so north from Pike Place Market (the have a "crabby hour" happy hour deal where you can get crab for a great deal).

Middle of the road (cost wise) places: The Crab Pot...people love this place, Lowells and the Athenian in Pike Place Market aren't mainly seafood, but they serve some good seafood dishes.

Cheap: Ivars (not the restaurant but the outdoor part next to the restaurant on the waterfront), if you like chowder you have to try Pike Place Chowder in the market...it's delicious! Emmett Watson Oyster Bar in the market has great fish and chips.

There are seafood restaurants everywhere here, but those are some of my favorites!

Arbs be my choice. Junipers a possibility, depending on exact locations and conditions, you may able to grow some of the irish junipers. Numerous cypress to choose from. If chamaecyparis, a hedge of some of the moderate growers may be a show stopper. Tendency to pyramidal growth, but some pruning and close planting would give you the wall effect. How ambitious are you. You can espalier anything...know a place on PA that had a blue atlas cedar espalliered against a barn wall...pruned about once a year. Takes a bit to establish, but memorable.

Best tomato varieties for Seattle

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know how early I can start tomatoes in Seattle if I use a tunnel cloche (PVC hoops, 3' high, covered to the ground in plastic)? I would be using from hardened-off starts and planting them directly in the ground under the cloche. In the past we found that putting some water bottles under the cloche to absorb heat from sunlight seems to help a bit. I am hoping to put the tomatoes out around May 1. Steve Solomon seems pretty gung ho about this in his book, he even talks about planting tomatoes out under a cloche, before the last frost date, but he is in the Williamette Valley, and in any case he probably has a better cloche than my jury-rigged PVC and plastic job. Granted waiting later might be a better idea, but my home-grown starts are going to be around 10 weeks old at that time, and I don't want them to stay in the pots too long. Can I get away with putting them under the cloche around May 1? Also, we do have Walls'o'water, but I am not sure how much they can extend the season compared with a full cloche.

With your limited amount of time I would strongly suggest you try one of the food tours of Pike Place. I visit Seattle regularly (family) and had been to PPlace 3x already. We visited Seattle with some friends who had never been, so I signed us up for one of the of the food tours. I was surprised and pleased to find that we were taken to places I had overlooked, or were new to me. Using a tour gives you an invaluable overview of "where things are" in the various buildings. In fact, we saw a number of stores and said, "oh, we have to return to check that one out!" Which is what we did - returned a second day on our own and went through at a leisurely pace. We also went back to the eateries we really liked from the tour, which we would not have discovered on our own. You not only get to learn about the history of the market, but try 7-10 eateries which is something you wouldn't do on your own. All the places offer tour participants special samples. We had a variety of foods, from fresh cheese to crab cakes to desserts. It was a very fun way to eat lunch and exercise at the same time - there's a lot of walking on each tour. There are several companies giving PPlace tours: Savor Seattle and Seattle Bites Food are probably the biggest. They go to different places, but the concept is the same. Most visitors don't realize Pike Place is not one market, it is a cluster of individual buildings, and multi-story ones at that. Each building has dozens of tiny shops, vendor stalls, and eateries. There is A LOT to see and explore - really more than you can do in one day. We go out for Thanksgiving and Christmas. There are usually a few relatively decent restaurants that serve dinner on both of those days. Cherryfizz, I agree it's hard when families are gone on the holidays. I have many happy memories of family holidays in years' past - but all of those family members are now deceased. We don't really have any family to celebrate holidays with anymore. So we first tried eating at home by ourselves (it's just my spouse and me) - but for us, it felt even more sad to be home alone than surrounded by other people. So now we go out and eat a nice meal somewhere. It's usually a somewhat overpriced meal because most places charge a premium for meals on those 2 holidays....but we pick places that have good food anyway. Holidays can be hard. There is no right or wrong answer. For us, we're better off going out than sitting home with just the 2 of us.

Hey, Jenn.. Is Beth's cafe in Greenlake area still open?
they used to have the best breadfasts! LOL

The last time I ate at the Space Needle, it was very good. But that has been 5 years. Jenn, is Hirams still around? Down by the locks? kinda! lol that was good!
Salty's is good. Take the West Seattle walk on ferry.
A lot of the little spots along Alki in West Seattle are good!

Yep, Beth's Cafe is still open, 24 hours! I wouldn't call it fine dining though, LOL. That's sort of the place you go at 3am when nothing else is open. They still have that deal too where you get a special award or whatever if you can eat their 12 egg omellette. Yikes.

Not sure about Hirams, I think I've heard of it. I spend more time downtown than Ballard so most of the places I know are down there, besides Ray's Boathouse and Anthony's which are both in Ballard. And both DELICIOUS.

goodness folks, it has been 48 years, and every time Seattle is mentioned I still miss the area. Living on the coast in the Carolinas has been great, but oh how I miss the green of the forest and snow covered mountains. Beautiful country.

I checked out some of the places mentioned...I am so ready to eat! To bad I think I'll only have time for 2 meals...maybe 3. I am catching the red-eye home so maybe Beth's Cafe is the place to go before I leave....]

Ray's Boathouse, Paseo (Cuban) in Fremont or the Monkey Bridge in Ballard for lunch. 13 Coins anytime.
Pike Place Chowder beats Ivars by far.. All the ferries have cut food service to minimal. The chowder is Ivars though. (ugh)
