Oh that is to bad, that so many people don't think before things like this happen.

If I might add something about the photography. This pic looks blurry to me.....might be just my eyes. But if its not, I suggest using a tri-pod. The other option is IS lenses.

I was in Fargo ND for Christmas this year and it was 45 degrees every day. No snow. First non-white Christmas since 1957! I heard lots of people talking about how much they wished they could be in the ice houses but nobody was talking about doing it until the days got much colder.

Definitely a picture that is worth a thousand words Joan. If that doesn't get through to folks thinking about getting out there, I don't know what would. I have never had the patience to be much of a fisherman. And, looks like the guy with that ice house didn't have enough either. Yikes!

Glad to hear no one has had their impatience cost anyone their lives.

After I posted my pictures on our last ice storm, a lady slid through a railroad warning arm onto the tracks. She and her child were able to get out in time, but a 20 year old passenger trying to save two other children in the car didn't. They got out on the icy roads to pick up some fast food. So sad.

I know how stupid people can be when it comes to fishing. One year someone drove a van out onto the lake and it sunk. Cost them a fortune to haul it out besides fines from the DNR.

Hi, I thought of a couple other things....do you know what your speed was? Maybe it was to slow. Or perhaps you used auto focus and it didn't place the focus where you intended it to be.

All that aside, your photo tells a story, photo journalism at its best!

Your mention that they pull those things out there with a vehicle reminds me of a web story I saw a few years ago. How legit it is I can't say, but the story goes that a couple of guys went out on a lake and were going to blow a hole in the ice illegally with a stick of dynamite to do some hunting. They light the dynamite, throw the stick... and the guys new bird dog thinks they want to play fetch. As the dog starts bringing it back to them, they start shooting in front of him to discourage him from fetching the dyno right to them. The dog gets a little confused and scared, so takes off to hide - under the guys new SUV.... Like you say, stupidity in action!

Yes often local news papers and news shows will take less than technically correct photos........that is why I said photo journalism at its best. It tells a story, you were in the right place at the right time, and able to provide a photo to them.

As a photographer though, I see more the technical side of photography.

It really does depend what and where the photos are going to be used.

Hope I didn't upset you, my intent was to help you improve your photography.

Hey Joe, the gal was clearly following following the instructions carefully: "Point and shoot"... no one ever said which direction to "shoot". Great picture.

And if I ever find myself with my trailer in a lake, I hope Joan is the one there to photograph it. She would be kind enough to leave my already red enough face out of the pic. :)

I hope I am not having a problem of my new camera not making a tight connection with this lens, I have had the lens a few years and taken many, many bird shots with it.

You are fine. The photo is compressed so much anyhow there is no way to make an honest critic of it. I see your focal length was 300mm and your shutter speed was 1/250, you usually want a shutter speed x2 of the focal length, that will eliminate any camera shake. I think you said you had OIS, if you think your pictures are soft give that a try next time. Peace!

Joan, if you have a tri-pod or mono-pod, use it when you are using longer focal lengths like 300, if at all possible. Thats the simplist solution. IMO IS is good, but its not perfect.

I wouldn't worry about the connection to your new camera, good lenses can last a life time without problems.

Compressed files can cause softness, but usually if you sharpen or sharpen edges it fixes the web versions.

I haven't had a chance to look through your pics, but I would love to when I have more time! :-)

Perhaps weather, cropping??
I'm in no means a Pro...but this is what went thru my head....
When shooting at far distances,..it looks likes in this pic, and weather doesn't cooperate, like dark cloudy wet miserable day, you will end up with a pic like this,.....and when it is cropped [not sure in this case] it makes it even worse.
