Help with spacing of pendants over island

We will soon be installing our island - the granite top will measure 3' by 6'. I'm thinking that I need two mini-pendants. The ones that I am looking at have a 7" diameter. Am I correct in assuming that I need two pendants or do I need three? How far apart should they be spaced?

Here are the mini-pendants that I am purchasing. We already have the chandelier for our dining area from before the renovation; I was so pleased to see that there are pendants that match.

I don't know if this will work for you, but it's what I'm planning to do in the next few days. Tape out where the island will go, or lay out paper to approximate it's location. Then, get some balloons, blow them up to approximately 7" in diameter and tie on a string. Tape the string to the ceiling in the approximate locations and the approximate length where they will end up. Leave this up for a day or two if possible. This might help you visualize where the pendants will go and help you decide on spacing or number.

I have the same situation, if I remember correctly I read a lighting blog that said you divide in half then place pendants in center of each (side) half. It should be plenty of light if you have downward pendants for task lighting on the island and enough recessed lighting around the perimeter.

What you should do is place the pendants absolutely centered on the island but place them 1/3 of the way in from the seating area. Then place a high hat directly above your sink for good task lighting. That's what I did and it works beautifully. Those sitting at the island get good lighting and you working at the sink get good lighting and no one will ever notice if it's slightly off because no one ever stands exactly dead center looking.

over the island i would rather see something like this, than individual pendants over the isalnd. for the sink, i would do one 'down' light. 3 to me is overkill and 2 will look 'weird'. are you installing under cab lights as well? with the undercab lights, it will help with the sink area. 'down' light another example(where all the light is down in your sink - none 'escaping' up or out of course get the fixture to scale with the space.

Thx, Beverly. The rough-ins are 32 inches center to center so the spacing between the lighting would not be 30 to 32”. It will be less. Do you still think 32 inch centers on an island this size is good spacing? I’m thinking 12 to 14 inch wide pendants is the maximum I should go. Just wondering if they will be too small considering this oversized island.
