BM Bittersweet Satin Impervo Alkyd Alternative?

Hey everyone, looking at painting my bathroom vanities and love the BM bittersweet chocolate color.

I was looking for BM satin impervo alkyd - which I was told is no longer available. It was suggested I try their waterborne satin impervo, or iron clad.

Does anyone have experience with this color in those paints? pics?

Recommendations? I like the idea of oil for long working time, and vibrancy of color and ease of use. I have heard the Aura paints and waterborne dry quickly and are harder to use. Can latex really compete?

I have painted furniture with Bittersweet mixed in Aura -- Sprayed and brushed. Not my favorite experience and that was with the extender added to Aura. A DIYer with a limited painting skillset I could see getting frustrated with using Aura on furniture.

You can order the Satin Impervo Alkyd from My Perfect Color. Orders over $50 is free shipping. Could work well for you since you are sure of the color and it's a Ben Moore color they would be mixing for you.

Great, thanks for the link. Glad to see it is still available. Anyone else have experience with the alternatives? If latex work, it does have its clear advantages.

Why buy a piece of junk when you can rent a nice rig for much less? Most paint stores, some HD's and all rental stores will carry a nice airless which will do the job for you.

You can sometimes use a fresh razor blade to carefully shave off drips and runs. The paint needs to be cured for it to work, but same goes for sanding it down. Casey

Satin Impervo comes in oil or water based. Where I live in Ohio however, oil is no longer carried in gallons and no paint store can tell you how long the quarts will even be on the shelves. VOC laws are taking it away. Your painter that uses water based alkyd is ahead of the curve. I have used 2 SW water based alkyds. Pro classic and Pro Mar 200. They're both fantastic. Much lower VOC. They feel great, look great, and are tough products. Lots of painters just use a water based acrylic on the trim anymore which is fine. Oil will definitely yellow over time. Some oils will yellow a lot. It is still good stuff but it is not by any means above a water based alkyd. You will get a great finish with anything as long as the painter is good. I would let him use what he wants and feels comfortable with using. Especially if they have had good results with it.

Sanding between coats is only part of the process. In order to get that final smooth finish you're looking for, it is also necessary to give the entire surface and all adjacent & surrounding work area's a thorough vacuuming. I can't stress this enough. Totally dust free. After he vacuums it, he should tack all the surfaces to be painted with tack clothes. And finally, don't forget to strain the paint. I always run the paint thru strainers and if I need to add any penetrol to the mix during the day I will even run that thru the strainer. If you have any hot forced air heat vents in your work area, that too can sometimes create problems, so you may want to cover any exposed vents if any air is blowing out of it. I've been painting houses for a living since 1977, and been using Satin Impervo forever. It's an excellent product, but it's all about the prep, especially when you're dealing with an extended drying period. Any dust floating around in the air, is going to settle into the wet paint, which will leave you with a dirty and rough finish. Good luck to you...

My neighbor used latex instead of impervo on her kitchen cabinets and regrets it. Water spots. In a bathroom vanity setting, I'd avoid a water-based treatment, unless you want to add an extra step and top with water-based poly.

If it were me, I'd wait till spring to use the impervo so you have can a window wide open. i dont think a bathroom vent fan would exchange air enough for you while you're in there working.

I used BM Bittersweet Chocolate on my bathroom vanities in the latex. SA said it couln't be mixed with Impervo since it needed a dark base and Impervo doesn't have one. I did topcoat it with a Poly and it takes no time at all to do that. I have had no problems and it's been 2 years.
