New question... like your pot filler faucets?

How do you feel about your pot filler faucets? I've conceded the placement of my future induction cooktop and am not placing it in an island. So the question is... are these faucets just "gimmicky"? Are they functional? My sink is about two diagonal steps from where my current range is. The new cooktop will either be in the same location or if I switch out placement of the frig and range will be about another 4 feet down the cabinet run. Will it be worth it if I place it at the further end of the run? I do like how they look but am much more concerned about the function being worth the cost. It would be against an outside wall where the frig water line is, my washer/dryer is against the same outside wall so I'm assuming water access will be no problem. Would really value some input.

I'm trying to make that same decision myself. There have been other threads on the same subject.

Argument for:
Convenience and great look.
No need to lift a heavy pot out of the sink and maybe scratch or chip a fire clay sink.
Faster fill bec pot fillers suposedly produce more gpm (but not all, some were still 2.5 gpm).
Neighbor has hers plumbed to the hot water line.
..(One GW'r said not to drink water from hot line, but another said it didn't matter bec they no longer use lead solder.)

Argument against:
Wouldn't really use it that much.
Extra expense (rough plumbing and fixture cost, $300 - $1000 ??
More things to leak and go wrong.
Do you match to shape and finish of main faucet?

Well, you've got to lug the pot to the sink to drain it anyway- for the expense of purchase and running a line, might as well just use the faucet at the sink- that was our conclusion.

Also, speaking as one who has an induction cooktop, IF it drips onto your cooktop, you'll get a code error and won't be able to use the cooktop until you've wiped it off. This is the great technology that prevents boil-overs from continuing and running onto the counters and/or floor.

Just my two cents worth.

The house we are renovating had a hot water tap at the sink. I was impressed. I'm a tea drinker, and it made it so easy. I also used it to clean a pot or pan, sort of a squirt of the very hot water to sanitize it. Of course I only used it one weekend we stayed at the house before demo. I took it out and didnt replace it for two reasons. One, even though we have well water, i prefer to drink (and make tea with) spring water. Two, my sink has two faucets , a soap and a sprayer. Thats a lot of bling already. Pot fillers. I put one in the kitchen in my old house 8-9 years ago. Loved it, could not do without it. If only you could drain the water too.

Casey, thanks for doing the speed test! I googled Chicago Faucets pot fillers ... they look like they're commercial quality and very reasonably priced. Unfortunately, I need a deck mounted filler (exterior wall), and they don't seem to make one.

I had one in the last kitchen. It was great. Once one of the seals failed, but it was only when I turned it on, and it wouldn't turn off, but just went to a drip. So, I turned off it off at the shut off valve, put a pot under it, called the manufacturer, they sent the O-ring. Which didn't fix it, so they sent me a new faucet. Never happened again. As for the lack of drain argument, do people have drains under the refrigerator if they have water in the door? I never have. The argument about having to carry the hot water to the sink, is not really a good argument against the pot filler. I for one did not ever dump hot water out of the pot when making pasta. Usually use a strainer to scoop out pasta. The amount of water that would be left in the pot is not that heavy for cleaning up. And I never dump my soup out. It is ladled out of the pot into bowls for serving. And then to clean it up, it is ladled into containers and sent to freezer or refrigerator and I carry the empty pot to the sink. I would absolutely do another one if needed. I did not do one in this kitchen because I have a prep sink located right behind the range on the end of the island. Last house only had one sink, it was very helpful. And by the time the new kitchen had 3 sinks planned for it, I'm not sure I could have convinced anyone that having a pot filler was necessary!

I won't be picking out my backsplash until later. For a few reasons - the first is financial. I need a few months to save and afford it. The second is not knowing what would look best. I'd like to have the cabinets and granite installed for a while and look at it and think about what color and pattern would look best in my kitchen. But, does a ORB faucet look good over a SS range if there are no other ORB fixtures near by? How many of you have two fixtures finishes in your kitchen? Does it look bad?

That was a very valuable 2 cents. I was planning on induction and wasn't aware of that. Oh well.. you guys just saved me some $$$ that I'll put into my countertops and backsplash. Thanks for the helpful input!

pecan, you brought up a good point but I'm still going to get one with the induction; I've been using mine for 7 years and find it useful. There's no residual drop that drips from it, like a regular tap.

So if you're boiling vegetables let's say and droplets spit out of the lid, the induction cooktop gives out the error signal, or does it do it only for a substantial amount of water ?
