Here are some ideas to consider.

Put the sofa where the 2 red chairs are to create a more distinct area between LR and DR. Put the 2 red chairs opposite. See if this helps to balance out the space.

I don't like the tone of the red chairs with the fireplace, and think that neutral leather would look nice. They are nice chairs and you might consider them in a bedroom or other room in the house.

I also don't think the wood tone of the mantle shelf goes with the fireplace brick. It could be my monitor, but the brick has some pink undertones, the mantle is too orange. I would like to see the mantle stained darker like the curio cabinet.

I think an area rug would look nice in the LR.

I think adding window treatments would be one of the first things to do, as it would warm up the space, and help bring the 2 windows by the fireplace into proportion in the room.

There are also a lot of vertical things going on, and not enough horizontal surfaces to "ground" the space. With the curio, china hutch, and secretary all being the same proportions, I would like to see some console tables or end tables that are more grounding at that midlevel in the space.

I think the lighting is fine if you like it. But adding some lamps on consoles or sofa tables would bring some light lower to read in the space.

Overall, a nice space.

I agree with julie. The chairs look too delicate for your room. I am also not a fan of the color, but if they were a different style they might have been OK.
Even before reading julie's post, I thought an area rug would be a good idea in the living room.
You need to first decide what you are going to do with the chairs. Rug, placement of furniture and window treatment will follow.
You have a beautiful space with lots of light. You'll get there! We have all made decorating mistakes. I am still living with a few of mine!

I actually like the red chairs and I bet they're prettier in person. They give nice color to the room.

I do agree that putting the sofa where the chairs are would define the two areas, and a sofa table would help.

The problem is all the furniture is spread out, which I know you said it was just sitting there. An area rug with a bit of red in it would make the room cozier.

The chairs would look nice against the window, as long as they don't get in the way of TV viewing.

Whencouch is used as a divider in your room (with console table behind it) and your chairs are in front of the window across from the couch....your TV can go on the wall opposite the fireplace. I would probably remove the secretary for now because you will need lamp/table between your chairs and might need the room. The secretary looks sort of "wedged" into the corner. Area rug and coffee table would finish off the room, I would think. Pretty room.

Thank you for your responses. The secretary is just sitting there and is going!!! Actually it is a stereo system in it and only reason there was for Christmas music! lol!
If red chairs gone, what furniture pieces and styles would you suggest? I was thinking I would need furniture pieces before the window treatments to be able to determine colors, styles, etc. ???

Julie, what kind of window treatments would you suggest? I need privacy at night from dr and lr eight foot wide windows. Also the furniture/rug is exposed to a lot of sun being they are on the SE S SW sides. There are windows in the breakfast nook too and I am thinking just about doing valences on them, the deck door on the right of that has blinds in the glass so would just do valence. But how high to put the valances and treatments by windows in dr so they don't compete.

Oakleyok, the custom chairs are nice, they were each over 2k when new. I bought off Craigslist for a lot less, but they had never been used. Kravet upholstery, and very comfortable.

I think that cote de texas offers a lot of good advice and pictures about window treatments. I would look there for ideas, and then probably look online for products.

I would probably select a rug before looking at window fabrics or other chairs

I think the red chairs add some pizzaz to the room. On my computer it looks like they compliment the fireplace stone very nicely. I would at least wait until after you have some window treatments up and see how it looks before giving up on them. I think the suggestions for a darker stain on the mantel and putting the chairs in front of the window are good ideas.

Hi. I would make a grouping in front of the fireplace, using the fireplace as your focal point I would put the red chairs on either side of the fireplace and move the couch much closer to the fireplace with a round or oblong coffee table in front of the couch and a console table behind the couch with a lamp on it if possible. And yes, agree that a nice colorful rug in front of the couch grouping would be pretty too. on the wall where the couch was I might find a nice hutch desk or bookcase. in any event , it all looks too spread out right now and less cozy. I will take some pics showing moving some furniture like suggested. Oopsie, I am concerned how far forward the couch can go being opposite of the fireplace, and still have a walkway and something behind there. Also, the window presents a problem. I'll try post a floor plan. No one suggested the couch by the window. An ID suggested that. It is so interesting to get many perspectives. I sure appreciate everyones posts!

Until I got to the TV issue, I was thinking you should put the piano where the sofa is. I do think the sofa where the chairs are now would do more two define two distinct areas and you can take that further by putting a sofa table or console behind the sofa. I would try the red chairs at the front window and decide whether you are going to keep them in that room before trying to decide on window treatments, because without them, I'd be looking at the tones in your throw pillows and other cooler colors. If you do keep the red, you need to work to tie the two different palettes together with any rug or window treatments. If you don't, the choices are much broader.
